Exclusive: David O. Sacks Productions, Mark Goffman and Getaway Entertainment are teaming to produce a feature-length film about Satoshi Nakamoto, the enigmatic founder of Bitcoin, with Sophia Banks set to direct. The movie, based on Andrew O’Hagan’s longform article “The Satoshi Affair,” will delve into the mystery surrounding the elusive creator of the world’s most revolutionary digital currency, blending investigative journalism with captivating storytelling.

“This film will be akin to watching The Social Network without knowing who the Mark Zuckerberg character might actually be,” Sacks remarked. “I’m delighted that we have the correct team in place to bring O’Hagan’s investigation, and the events since that period, to life.”

Producers David Sacks and Daniel Brunt optioned the article and took it to longtime collaborator Mark Goffman, who is adapting the screenplay and producing with Sacks and Brunt. Producing for Getaway Entertainment are Damiano Tucci, Banks and Arwen Elys Dayton.

Exclusive: Actress, writer, and producer Haley Bennett has signed with UTA for representation.

Bennett made her film debut in the 2007 romantic comedy Music and Lyrics opposite Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore. Most recently, coming on the heels of her appearance in Lionsgate action-comedy Borderlands (released August 2024), Bennett starred in Samir Oliveros’ feature The Luckiest Man in America opposite Paul Walter Hauser, which premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival and was quickly acquired by IFC and Sapan Studios.

Up next for Bennett is the Apple TV+ series The Last Frontier, where she stars alongside Jason Clarke. Directed by Sam Hargrave and John Curran, the series recently wrapped production and is set to premiere in March 2025. As deals continue to trickle in from last month’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Sony Pictures Classics said it has acquired North America and multiple territories to the drama On Swift Horses starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Jacob Elordi.

The company has also taken Latin America, Turkey, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, India, Italy, Australia and New Zealand.

The American Film Institute revealed the full lineup for this month’s festival, scheduled to take place in Los Angeles from Oct. 23-27. Joining the previously announced roster of films will be Tim Fehlbaum’s September 5, Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light, Samir Oliveros’ The Luckiest Man in America, Maisie Crow and Abbie Perrault’s abortion rights documentary Zurawski v Texas (executive produced by Hillary Clinton, Chelsea Clinton and Jennifer Lawrence), and Paul Schrader’s Oh, Canada, among many others.

The lineup includes six red carpet premieres, 12 special screenings, 13 luminaries picks, 15 discovery films, 12 world cinema films, 14 documentaries, four after-dark titles, 54 films in the short film competition and 28 films from the AFI Conservatory Showcase presented by AMC Networks. “September 5,” “All We Imagine as Light,” “The Luckiest Man in America,” “Zurawski v Texas,” and “Oh, Canada” are among the titles that round out the 2024 AFI Fest lineup, organizers announced on Tuesday.

This year’s AFI Fest takes place in Los Angeles from October 23 to October 27.

The festival will open with the world premiere of “Music By John Williams,” the upcoming documentary about the Oscar-winning composer John Williams. The film will have a limited theatrical release before arriving on Disney+.

Clint Eastwood’s “Juror No. 2” will close the festival before it premieres in theaters on November 1.

Other big screenings at AFI Fest include “Here,” “Heretic,” “Maria,” “Nightbitch,” “Bird,” “A Real Pain,” “The Room Next Door,” “The Fire Inside,” “I’m Still Here,” “The Order,” and “Unstoppable.” AFI also plans to honor Robert Zemeckis, director of the upcoming film “Here,” which reunites the “Forrest Gump” Oscar winner with Tom Hanks and Robin Wright.

After a successful run hosting last year’s Spirit Awards, former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Aidy Bryant is returning for the event’s 40th anniversary. Now four decades strong, the awards have become a key fundraiser for Film Independent’s year-round initiatives.

There were a handful of indie pickups, with A24 nabbing Brady Corbet’s buzzy period epic The Brutalist and Andrew DeYoung’s bro-com Friendship starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd, and Samuel Goldwyn Films taking North American rights to Nick Hamm’s Medieval actioner William Tell starring Claes Bang. The fall film festival season may still be kicking right along, but, with the conclusion of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival this past weekend, the film landscape for this season (and beyond) has come into clearer focus.

Big questions, however, remain: What films is everyone going to be talking about in one, two, six months? Who won big and might see even more awards glory come their way soon? Who was there? And how can film fans who couldn’t make it north for the lauded festival see the films we’re all buzzing about? For the last year, he’s been hopping from one set to the next, taking part in big productions, like Prime Video’s TV series adaptation of “Fallout,” and indie projects, like the upcoming based-on-a-true-story game show thriller “The Luckiest Man in America,” which had its world premiere at TIFF this week. Taking a break from his current shoot on Season 4 of “The Righteous Gemstones,” Goggins spoke to IndieWire briefly about one of his more anticipated projects, Season 3 of Mike White’s hit HBO series “The White Lotus,” and the bond that grew with his cast-mates over the long, six-month shoot.

“When you are sequestered for six months and all you have is each other, one can imagine that people get very, very close and familial and you’re roughing it out in five star accommodations,” Goggins said. “But the experience is so...

A clip of the real “Press Your Luck” episode from 1984 that inspired “The Luckiest Man in America” accompanies the end credits, taken from the mid-show banter between contestant Michael Larson and Peter Tomarken. Larson has the kind of anecdotes that probably made a producer smile during a pre-interview, telling Tomarken about how he tried to make good with his daughter after missing her birthday and drove an ice cream truck the previous summer to supplement his income as an air conditioning repairman. It’s good enough to fill 45 seconds of air time, but it’s hard to see what director Samir Oliveros did in making it the backbone of a 90-minute film covering Larson’s infamous appearance on the game show.

For a film about a game show surrounding the pushing of a button at just the right moment, it’s fascinating how “The Luckiest Man in America” goes out of its way to never fall into a pattern. Whenever you think you’ve got a read on what it’s going for, the film will dart in another direction and throw out what it’d just been doing moments prior.

Though one could call it a thriller based on a true story about a man who rigged a game show, it also has the heart of a dramedy hidden away somewhere that you occasionally catch flashes of under the brightly colored studio lights. With Paul Walter Hauser capturing the specific quirks and buried anxieties of the titular “luckiest man,” it’s a film that provides a strange snapshot — even if it may fade away just as quickly.

“No one ends up in my chair by mistake.” So game show contestant Michael Larson (Paul Walter Hauser) is told late in The Luckiest Man in America by a talk show host (Johnny Knoxville) after he interrupts his taping.

The statement, though reassuring, isn’t true in the literal sense; Michael has absolutely stumbled into this particular room by mistake. But it reflects a desire on the film’s part to impart meaning to Larson’s real-life story — to glean from it some deeper wisdom about his character or ours, to turn it into something more than just a weird thing that happened once.

Problem is, it’s never totally clear what Michael is doing here, or indeed what any of us are. As a mood piece, the Samir Oliveros-directed The Luckiest Man in America is plenty evocative, full of retro flair tinged with dread or dreaminess. But as...

At their best, game shows have always been defined by their juxtaposition of genuine stakes and utter ridiculousness. Audiences see flashing lights, gaudy neon color palettes, and spray-tanned hosts with unconvincingly dyed hair, but contestants see a battlefield where fortunes can be won and lost. Daytime shows revolve around games of chance deemed simple enough to provide the most mindless of background noise while people do chores around the house, but the money involved often has life-changing implications for those involved.

The Toronto Film Festival on Thursday returned post-strikes with Hollywood star wattage as Ben Stiller and director David Gordon Green gave a glittering lift-off for their opening night film Nutcrackers.

Elizabeth Banks stunned Robin Roberts and her Good Morning America co-hosts as she recalled a frightening incident from a movie set.

Banks, currently hosting Press Your Luck Season 6, appeared on the morning program to discuss the game show.

She talked about how exciting it is to give away big prizes and money to contestants but also spoke about her “annoying co-star,” the Whammy.

A clip revealed footage of the contestant who set a new record on the game show, with Banks wowed by his performance. She even pretended to pass out after spinning around during one moment of his impressive performance on the show.

Meanwhile, Banks was also left speechless on a movie set, but it was due to a very real “super scary” choking incident.

The award-winning actress indicated she was grateful for someone who stepped in to save her from potentially choking to death.

In the upcoming episode of “Press Your Luck” titled “Deadpool and Wolverine Whammy Takeover,” viewers are in for an action-packed and thrilling game show experience. Set to air on ABC at 8:00 Pm on July 25, 2024, this special episode promises to be full of surprises and excitement.

Jon Stewart returned to “The Daily Show” desk Tuesday night and spoke about the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pa., on Saturday.
