There are plenty of strange and potentially embarrassing moments for actors on the satirical superhero series "The Boys," but for star Antony Starr, who plays the horrifying Superman subversion, Homelander, his most nerve-wracking moment came about because of a childhood crush on one of his co-stars. While Starr has had his fair share of disgusting and disturbing moments as Homelander, he told Seth Meyers during a visit to "Late Night with Seth Meyers" that it was actually a bit more intimidating to know that he would be acting alongside the dream girl of his younger years: Elisabeth Shue.
It's one thing to act in scenes along with your childhood crush, but Starr also had to do some pretty weird things with Shue, who portrayed Vought's Senior Vice President of Hero Relations Madelyn Stillwell. In the first season of "The Boys," Stillwell and Homelander have a rather complicated relationship in which she breastfeeds him,...

Supernatural may have ruled screens with angels, demons, and endless Winchester drama, but not everyone was buying into its universe. And, as Eric Kripke himself admits, there was a reason why some fans dropped off along the way. His biggest oversight? Giving away too much.

Instead of letting viewers sink into the mystery, Supernatural kept filling in blanks that didn’t really need answers, leading die-hard fans to wonder: had the series lost its edge? For a show about the unknown, it’s ironic that giving away the secrets became its Achilles’ heel, fueling debate to this day.

“Nickel Boys” stars Ethan Herisse and Brandon Wilson took different approaches to tackling their roles in director RaMell Ross‘ adaptation of Colson Whitehead‘s 2019 novel. Prior to filming, Herisse dove into the Pulitzer Prize-winning book to prepare for his role of Elwood.

I read the script, I did the tape, I sent it off into the void and then I picked up the book purely off of interest and knowing more about the story. I was familiar with ‘The Underground Railroad,’ I had read that, so I was familiar with Colson’s work. It wasn’t too big of a leap to go ahead and read this book.”

Naoki Urasawa is a genius when it comes to storytelling and creating villains. Both Friend from 20th Century Boys and Johan Liebert from Monster are regarded as some of the best antagonists in all of fiction. His way of connecting the plot after introducing completely new characters is fascinating, making every one he creates important to the story.

Anyone who says "The Boys" has been trying too hard to be political of late seemingly wasn't paying close attention back in season 1. Creator Eric Kripke's pitch-dark, immensely raunchy small screen take on writer Garth Ennis and illustrator Darick Robertson's comic books of the same name is many things, but subtle or understated has never been one of them. Indeed, it's a series whose fundamental approach to social satire has always basically amounted to, "Who would [Insert Name Of Infamous Real-Life Figure] be if they existed in a world of superheroes?"
In the case of convicted felon Donald Trump, the creatives behind "The Boys" have made it crystal clear that they perceive him as our version of Homelander (and vice versa). The parallels between Antony Starr's milk-slurping, evil Superman-y "Supe" and the "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York" actor are practically impossible to miss, even when "The Boys" doesn't underline its social...

"Sick" can mean a lot of things in the context of "The Boys." Season 4's newcomer Firecracker (Valerie Curry), for instance, is sick in a lot of ways. She's sick in that her whole life seems to be centered around getting revenge for a single mean girl incident that happened to her in her early teens. She's sick because she's peddling far-right conspiracy theories with seemingly full conviction, purely because those lies benefit her career. She's sick because she slept with a 15-year-old. But for the purposes of this piece, we're gonna stick to Firecracker's physical illness in the latter section of season 4. Why is Firecracker coughing so much?
The literal answer is easy: she's sick because she's taking a drug that helps out mothers who struggle with breastfeeding, except she's not a mother and she probably shouldn't be breastfeeding anyone, let alone a grown man with severe emotional problems.

If you think the TV series version of "The Boys" crosses the line, wait until you read the original comics by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson.
Ennis writes about things he hates getting raked over the coals. "Preacher" is an enormous middle finger to organized religion, particularly Christian fundamentalists. When Ennis wrote "The Punisher Max," he had Frank kill Ira terrorists, human traffickers, and Enron executives. Ennis' disdain for corporate America also leads us to "The Boys," which also let him vent about how ridiculous he thinks superheroes are, following in the footsteps of Pat Mills and Kevin O'Neill's comic "Marshal Law."
The "Boys" comic is more episodic than the show; it's divided into arcs about the Boys fighting one particular superhero team, then moving onto the next as they climb up the ladder towards the Seven. This avoids...

Prime Video has announced an explosive new addition to the fifth and final season of The Boys, with Stranger Things alum Mason Dye set to play Bombsight.
Though this Supe doesn't appear to be based on any specific character from the comics, he was mentioned last season as the star of a '50s Vought superhero film called The Curse of Fu Manchu.
So, like Soldier Boy and Stormfront, this guy has been around for quite a while.
According to Variety, Bombsight is also likely to appear in the upcoming prequel series Vought Rising opposite Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash.
We recently learned that Daveed Diggs (Snowpiercer) has also joined the cast of season 5, but details on his character are being kept under wraps.
Let’s give a warm welcome to Mason Dye, joining as Bombsight in Season 5. More details, you ask? Ya know better by now. pic.twitter.com...

“For the longest time, there was nothing. But then — it appeared. A beast not from this Earth, smiting the ones who deserved it, the ones who didn’t and everyone in between. Whoever controls it controls life and death. And those deaths are really f*cked up.”
Following a brief teaser, Neon has released the first trailer for The Monkey, a new Stephen King adaptation directed by Longlegs helmer Osgood Perkins and produced by James Wan.
Theo James stars in a dual role as twin brothers Hal and Bill, who, after discovering their father’s old monkey toy in the attic, begin to experience a series of gruesome deaths occurring all around them.
The brothers decide to throw the monkey away and move on with their lives, growing apart over the years. But when the mysterious deaths begin again, they must reunite to find a way to destroy the monkey...

The 2024 fall film festivals — Venice, Telluride, TIFF, and NYFF — are behind us, but critics deliberating their riches continues. IndieWire has polled 66 critics who attended one or more of these festivals to name their picks for best film, best screenplay, best director, and best first feature, and the results are fascinating, if not exactly shocking.
No films that played at Cannes or festivals earlier than Venice were eligible for consideration here. That means that “Anora,” which won best film, best screenplay, and best director on our Best of Cannes 2024 Critics Survey, was not eligible here. Nor was “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” or “The Substance,” other films that a few of the critics tried to sneak in on their ballots.
But looking at just the films that actually premiered at the fall fests, there was a clear victor: Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist” received the most overall votes for both Best Film and Best Director,...

Eric Kripke has a track record of producing highly successful shows, with his most recent work, The Boys, standing out as one of the best and most popular superhero series ever. Since its premiere on Amazon, the show has consistently pushed the boundaries of what can be shown on TV.
Season 4 of The Boys shattered viewership records and raised the stakes even higher than in previous seasons, leaving the world in chaos and evil seemingly poised to win. But the cast and crew promise that the upcoming fifth and final season will be the wildest yet.
In an earlier interview with Variety, Kripke shared exciting production details for the final season and teased what the future holds for the The Boys universe beyond Season 5.
I know you’re in the writers’ room writing Season 5 now, so what is the timeline for shooting and when it will air?

“Orion, Plan B, Louverture and Anonymous are maybe the only group of people who could make this happen,” director and artist RaMell Ross said of the team of Hollywood execs behind his latest feature-length project, Nickel Boys.
Adapted from Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer-winning novel of the same, the Orion Pictures/Amazon MGM Studios film, which Ross co-wrote with Joslyn Barnes, follows the powerful friendship between two young Black teenagers navigating the harrowing trials of reform school together in Florida. In the movie, a bright, striving teenager living amid the terrors of the Jim Crow South makes a split decision that recasts the course of his life. On the cusp of college, he’s instead sentenced to time at a notorious reformatory. There, he encounters a kindred spirit, forming an alliance, but one with incalculable consequences.

The title of eVil Sublet carries a double meaning. Ostensibly, it stands for East Village, the area of NYC where the film is set. But, since this is a horror comedy, it also means the apartment isn’t just furnished, it’s haunted. It certainly has a bloody history, something the prologue makes quite clear. That doesn’t, however, scare off Alex (Jennifer Leigh Houston; Apostasy) when she and her husband Ben when they tour it. When told the last tenant killed his family and buried them in the garden, she’s excited it has a garden, regardless of what was planted in it.

Karl Urban might have been content about his role in Chris Hemsworth and Taika Waititi’s best Thor film, but fans weren’t. Urban played Skurge/The Executioner in the 2017 Marvel film Thor: Ragnarok. Fans felt that the minor role in the film was below the abilities of the New Zealand actor. The comments from fans pre-dated his role as Billy Butcher in The Boys.

What does Prime Video's "The Boys" and FX's "What We Do In The Shadows" have in common? Well, nothing immediate or obvious at all, as these respective shows dabble in distinctly different brands of genre subversion. While "The Boys" takes an irreverent, sharp, and satirical approach to the superhero genre, "What We Do In The Shadows" completely embraces vampire mythos while leaning hard into heartfelt charm and genuine hilarity. Neither show can be strictly considered horror, but do contain slivers of the genre, employed to lighthearted and gruesome extremes along the course of its seasons.
The only overlap between these two shows comes in the form of shared special effects teams who sometimes recycle props from one show and use them in the other. The practical and digital effects in "What We Do In The Shadows" mostly highlight (or evoke) something fantastical or supernatural, such as CG bats, invisible objects,...

Amazon’s smash hit series, The Boys offers a unique take on the superhero genre. The show is designed as a satire of the superhero genre and a commentary on capitalism and vanity. Eric Kripke cleverly used sarcasm and chaos to present the dark side of the seemingly heroic saviors of the world.
Recent news of a spin-off being planned in the near future has fans worried about its implications. Some still didn’t get the deliberate satire of the show and the upcoming spin-off featuring Aya Cash and Jensen Ackles’s characters, might upset them. The two of the most problematic characters, especially Cash’s Stormfront might not receive favorable opinions from those who didn’t get the idea of the show.
The problem with satire: Searching for the right audience
The Boys presents a fictional world where a team of vigilantes is tasked with taking down vain and corrupt superheroes.

Aya Cash Comments on the Upcoming ‘Vought Rising’ Prequel Series: “[It’s] absolutely insanely good.”
The Boys is one of the most popular superhero series in the world. The series recently concluded its fourth season on July 18, 2024, and is preparing the groundwork for its fifth and final season.
As you might remember, despite some backlash from the so-called “fans,” the season was Certified Fresh, and the viewership figures proved it was a huge success, even surpassing Season 3.
But, even though the main series is slowly approaching its end, The Boys brand is growing, and more new projects will be released in the future as part of a larger franchise. One of the major projects that will be part of The Franchise is the prequel series Vought Rising, work on which has already begun.
As you might recall, Aya Cash’s Stormfront and Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy will return to this series, which will chronicle the beginnings of Vought International and explore the evolution of supes in modern America.

With supposedly-nonfiction books, I’ll focus tightly while reading on how true they are, looking for any crack in the verisimilitude that might imply some fiction has made its way into the mix. I think that’s pretty common: we want to know what kind of stories we’re being told, how constructed they are, to know how to respond.
But it’s not always clear how much the book is claiming to be nonfiction. This graphic novel – or bande dessinée, since it’s originally from France – is in the “Life Drawn” series from Humanoids, which I thought meant it was clearly, well, drawn from life. But I just took a look at their website, and the series is described as “Biographies and slice-of-life tales that show us what it means to be human” – and, more specifically, Wander Antunes’s adaptation of Twain’s short story Man Who Corrupted Hadleyburg , which I read recently,...

The wildest part of "The Boys" is its brazen interest in how superpowers can impact a person's sex life. Because so much of popular superhero media is meant to be at least somewhat family friendly, this was a topic rife for exploration, and showrunner Eric Kripke took full advantage. From an Ant-Man ripoff crawling inside his lover's urethra to an Aquaman knockoff having sex with a squid, "The Boys" has never been afraid to get weird with it.
Has this quality of the show always been well received? Not quite; "The Boys" has often been accused of overindulging in shock value and gross-out humor. And after its recent extended Bdsm sequence with Hughie (Jack Quaid) in season 4, it's been accused of treating the sexual assault of male characters way too flippantly. The show also has a growing reputation for being oddly sex negative; almost any kind non-heteronormative sex is treated...

Does “Anora” or “Emilia Pérez” have the edge in the Golden Globes’ comedy/musical categories? Will Nicole Kidman win her seventh Globe? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here with their first Golden Globe film predictions.
“Anora” and “Emilia Pérez” are not only top two in the Best Picture Oscar odds but are top two in the Best Comedy/Musical Film Golden Globe odds as well. The former definitely puts the “comedy” in the category title, while the latter for sure puts the “musical” in it. Which has the edge? Similarly, the past two Best Actress Oscar races have featured a frontrunner in drama and one in comedy/musical. Not the case this year, at least at the moment, since “Anora” star Mikey Madison and “Emilia Pérez’s” Karla Sofía Gascón will vie for the same Globe — and the winner could very well establish herself as the Oscar favorite.
