In the British series, a film crew came to Button House for filming.

“Ghosts” star Rose McIver will sit behind the camera to direct an episode of the hit CBS comedy, it was revealed Saturday during the show’s panel at New York Comic-Con. The episode, which starts filming soon and will air in 2025, reps the first time McIver will helm a TV series.

On “Ghosts,” McIver plays Sam, who inherits an old, haunted mansion that she and husband Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) turn into a bed and breakfast — much to the chagrin of the ghosts that Sam can communicate with. This year, on the show’s one-hour Christmas special, viewers will get to meet Jay’s parents for the first time.

Sakina Jaffrey and Bernard White have been cast as Jay’s parents, Champa and Mahesh, in the two-part episode, which airs on Thursday, December 19.

The new horror and science fiction anthology, “Deepest, Darkest,” has added yet another cast mate to its already stellar lineup of genre heavyweights.

Rahul Kohli, a beloved member of Mike Flanagan’s Flanaverse and essential teammate in the crime-solving “iZombie” series, has officially joined the star-studded cast of “Deepest, Darkest,” a new horror anthology from writer and director Marc Bernardin and actor Tiffany Smith.

“‘Deepest Darkest’ is an exciting project combining all my favorite genres and my favorite people. Joining this project was a no-brainer for me,” says Kohli, expressing his enthusiasm early in the process to Variety.

Kohli joins the previously announced cast of Smith (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”), Rosario Dawson, Ernie Hudson (“Ghostbusters”), Yetide Badaki (“American Gods”), Phil Lamarr and “Quantum Leap” stars Raymond Lee and Caitlin Bassett.

“Citadel” Season 2 at Amazon Prime Video has added a trio of recurring cast members.

Variety has learned exclusively that Merle Dandridge, Rahul Kohli, and Michael Trucco will all appear in the new season of the spy thriller series. They will appear opposite returning stars Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra-Jonas and returning cast member Stanley Tucci. Recently announced new cast members for the second season include Jack Reynor, Matt Berry, and Gabriel Leone.

“The second season will build on the intense action and complex characters introduced in the first season, promising even more thrilling twists and intrigue,” said “Citadel” executive producer and chief creative officer of series producer Agbo Angela Russo-Otstot. “Also, the recently announced ‘Citadel: Diana’ and ‘Citadel: Honey Bunny,’ from Italy and India respectively, further expand the storytelling and scope born from the world of ‘Citadel.’”

ABC series “High Potential” is getting a shift at the top, as showrunner Rob Thomas has departed the project, Variety has learned. The series, which stars Kaitlin Olson, is set to air Tuesdays at 10 p.m. this fall, after “Dancing With the Stars.”

Production has temporarily halted on the show, although insiders tell Variety that the switch comes during a pre-planned production hiatus.

It’s unclear what caused Thomas’ exit, but insiders said he had not been seen recently on set. Nonetheless, Thomas’ departure has been described as “amicable,” with studio sources noting that he has other projects in development at ABC Signature, which produces “High Potential.” A new showrunner is expected to be named shortly.

Production on “High Potential” had been well under way, having originally been ordered to series in May 2023, but pushed back a year due to the Hollywood strikes.

Kohli had been a popular fancasting choice for Reed Richards -- much like John Krasinski, who ended up playing a Reed variant in "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness." /Film even named Kohli as one of the actors we'd prefer to see play Mister Fantastic more than Krasinski. When the cast of next year’s The Fantastic Four was announced, a lot of people – including our readers – were left underwhelmed. The slasher mash-up Freddy vs. Jason just celebrated its 20th anniversary six months ago, and now we have some very sad news to share about one of its cast members: Chris Gauthier, who played the Jason victim Shack in the film, has passed away at the age of 48. The actor died on February 23 from an “unspecified short illness,” Variety reports.

Exclusive: Emmy-nominated writers-producers Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker, executive producers and co-showrunners of Abbott Elementary and co-developers and executive producers of Harley Quinn, have signed a new exclusive overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group, the studio behind the acclaimed ABC comedy series and the popular Max adult animated series. Details are not being disclosed but the premium pact is said to be for four years.

Under the agreement, Halpern and Schumacker will continue to develop, create, and produce programming through their Wbtv-based company, Delicious Non-Sequitur Productions, including series for Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max streaming platform, external streaming services, the broadcast networks, and cable.

Halpern and Schumacker serve as executive producers and co-showrunners with creator/star Quinta Brunson of Abbott Elementary, which returns for its third season Feb. 7 on ABC.

Historically, TV show demand within the horror genre surges each October, and 2023 is anticipated to be no exception. The chart below shows demand peaks for horror TV series during the months of October in the last years.

The fluid nature of the entertainment sector ensures that the horror genre remains ever-evolving. Within this genre, audience preferences shift, as new shows introduce trends and captivate viewers, while interest in others wanes. A case in point is the burgeoning popularity of horror-comedy shows.

In the first quarter of 2021, this sub-genre accounted for 10.8% of the total horror show demand. Fast forward to two and a half years later, and its market share has risen to 17.4%. Netflix has just premiered the trailer for Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher. The limited series takes inspiration from several Edgar Allen Poe works, many of which you can pick out from the trailer. The show mainly takes its cue from the Poe story of the same name.

The synopsis for the series reads,

Ruthless siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher have built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into an empire of wealth, privilege and power. But past secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from their youth.

The first trailer for Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” has arrived, and it’s positively brimming with Poe. The limited series is set to premiere all eight episodes on Netflix on Oct. 12.

Adapted from the short story of the same name by Edgar Allen Poe, this version follows siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher, two “ruthless” forces who have built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into a massive financial empire. But when secrets from the past come back to haunt them, the members of this powerful family will start to fall all thanks to “a mysterious woman from their youth,” according to a press release for the series.

The CW as it existed for nearly 20 years is truly no longer. Last year, Nexstar purchased a majority stake in the network, which was a co-venture between Warner Bros. and CBS. In the age of streaming, however, co-owning an unprofitable network simply made less and less sense. Enter Nexstar, who has been cutting back heavily on the line-up of scripted programming in an attempt to bolster The CW's profits. To that end, two more shows have hit the chopping block in the form of "Supernatural" spin-off "The Winchesters" and "Kung-Fu." With that, the final nails in the coffin have essentially been put in place.

Exclusive: Dexter Darden (Chang Can Dunk), Chloe Bridges (Maggie) and Robert Buckley (One Tree Hill) have joined the cast of Amber Ruffin and Kenny Smith NBC comedy pilot, Non-Evil Twin.

Darden plays Marcus, a contemporary nerd and tech developer for exercise equipment. He’s a good guy, but no fan of confrontation, which makes it hard for him to do the right thing at times. Bridges plays Robin, the CEO of Dandee Sports Apparel and Angie’s (Ruffin) corporate nemesis. She’s a self-described woman of faith who’s a shark in the boardroom. Buckley plays Samson, Angie’s not-so-bright lawyer who, in addition to providing legal counsel, provides Angie with anything she needs…be it copious amounts of rosé or sex.

The multi-camera pilot stars Ruffin playing the dual roles of twin sisters Angie and Amber. Angie is the ruthless CEO of AngieCorp, who is as heartless as she is rich.

As is typical with a second season sitcom, CBS’ “Ghosts” has now gotten to try its hand at one of the hallmarks of the genre: the Christmas episode.

The two-part midseason finale “The Christmas Spirit” sees Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) host Jay’s sister Bela (Punam Patel) at their upstate New York mansion for Christmas. Bela surprises Sam and Jay when she shows up with her single and extremely eligible friend Eric (Andrew Leeds), but is quick to assure everyone (including a pained Eric) that there’s absolutely nothing romantically going on between them. But Sam, being a romantic and a Christmas fanatic, sets her heart on recreating her favorite holiday movies, and getting Bela to fall in love with Eric.

It's an hour-long episode dripping with holiday nostalgia and cheeky fun.

"The Christmas Spirit, Part One" and "The Christmas Spirit, Part Two" felt like two complete parts of one story.

This holiday tale isn't a case of two episodes being slapped together due to a schedule decision. Or two episodes airing back-to-back to rush through the production.

Both parts fit together nicely to tell a heartwarming holiday story set at Woodstone Manor. You couldn't have one part without the other; both were needed to fill out the story to give it a complete resolution.

Creep, Creep 2, Corporate Animals, and There’s Someone Inside Your House director Patrick Brice has lined up his next genre project, as Deadline reports that Brice has signed on to direct the graphic novel adaptation Party & Prey for Legendary Entertainment and AfterShock Media. Brice will be working from a screenplay by Robert Forman, who previously wrote an episode of the TV series iZombie and a couple episodes of the show Army Wives.

Created by Steve Orlando and Steve Foxe, the Party & Prey graphic novel was described as “a social horror-thriller with a bold genre twist”. The story centers on Alan, a wealthy, older gay man, who meets a confident and attractive young man named Scott at a nightclub. Their chemistry leads them to end up at Alan’s house, where the men’s dark secrets are laid bare and they have a night together neither of them expected.

Exclusive: Legendary Entertainment and AfterShock Media have closed a deal for a feature adaptation of the latter’s graphic novel Party & Prey from creators Steve Orlando & Steve Foxe, in a competitive situation. Patrick Brice (Creep) has been tapped to direct from a script by Rob Forman (iZombie).

Published in 2021, the graphic novel penned by Orlando and Foxe is billed as a social horror-thriller with a bold genre twist. It tells the story of Alan, a wealthy, older gay man, who meets a confident and attractive young man named Scott at a nightclub. Their chemistry leads them to end up at Alan’s house, where the men’s dark secrets are laid bare and they have a night together neither of them expected.

AfterShock Media and Legendary will produce the film adaptation alongside Lee Kramer, David Sigurani and Jon Kramer, with Orlando and Foxe exec producing, and Max Zupanovic serving as co-producer.

All the cater-waiters of "Party Down" might not be having fun yet, but fans of the show can't wait for their return in the upcoming revival. The original series aired for only two seasons on Starz from 2009-2010. Watching these misanthropes bide their time working at the titular catering company while trying to find their big breaks in Hollywood is a true joy: The show is absolutely hysterical, with unforgettable characters and a surprising amount of heart. I've lost count of how many times I've watched those first two seasons.

Fans were crushed when the series got the axe so quickly, and there was talk of a "Party Down" film for a time, but sadly, that never materialized. Considering the fact that this cast has been super busy with other projects in the years since, it's pretty miraculous that they are able to don their pink bow ties once more.

“Party Down” Season 3 is officially a reality, as Starz has offered a first look at (most of) the cast of the cult hit comedy series back together again, while announcing that it will premiere on Feb. 24.

“True Detective” Season 4 has added three new cast members, Variety has learned.

Aka Niviâna, Isabella Star Lablanc (“Long Slow Exhale”), and Joel D. Montgrand have all joined the HBO series’ fourth outing. They join previously announced leads Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as well as cast members John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, and Anna Lambe.

The new season of the series is officially titled “True Detective: Night Country.” The official description of the season states, “When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the six men that operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”

The Midnight Club, the latest series from genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan, is currently available to watch on the Netflix streaming service – and next up is the Edgar Allan Poe-inspired limited series The Fall of the House of Usher.
