Jean Boht, who played the iron-fisted matriarch Nellie Boswell on every episode of the 1986-91 BBC sitcom Bread, has died. She was 91.
Boht died Tuesday, her family announced, saying that she “had been battling vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease with the indefatigable spirit for which she was both beloved and renowned.”
She had been living in Denville Hall, a home in London for actors and other members of the entertainment industry.
Her husband of 52 years, Carl Davis, who composed the scores for The French Lieutenant’s Woman and Abel Gance’s epic 1927 silent film Napoléon, died six weeks ago after suffering a brain hemorrhage.

The 31st edition of London’s Raindance Film Festival will open with the U.K. premiere of British actor Jack Huston’s directorial debut “Day of the Fight.”
The film comes to Raindance fresh off its Venice debut, where Huston was honored by Variety as a breakthrough director.
The story of a once-renowned boxer who takes a redemptive journey through his past and present on the day of his first fight since he left prison stars Michael Pitt alongside a cast including Ron Perlman, Joe Pesci, and a cameo from Steve Buscemi.
The U.K. premiere of Isabel Coixet’s “Un Amor” will close the festival after it bows at San Sebastian. Based on Sara Mesa’s bestselling novel, Laia Costa plays a young woman who escapes her stressful life in the city and relocates to rural Spain. When she accepts a disturbing sexual proposal, it gives rise to an all-consuming and obsessive passion.

‘Japan is known for having very beautiful seasons. Every day, as we live, we are influenced so much by them – the change of the season, the air, the temperature, the wind, or the smell of the wind. Those are things that inspires us.’
It’s clear that nature is something that is very much at the heart of Akira Kosemura, both the man and the music that he makes. His is a natural talent, born of a fascination with film music, storytelling and a curiosity about the sounds of the world around us. That all shines through in Seasons, but the seeds have been sewn by the musician and composer over the last 15 years and a blossoming career that seemingly grew out of nowhere. Or should that be somewhere?
Tokyo is home for Kosemura, it’s where he was born, and it continues to play an important role in shaping his identity as a composer.

“The Devil Wears Prada” and “27 Dresses” writer Aline Brosh McKenna’s directorial debut “Your Place Or Mine” stars Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher. A strong ensemble cast includes Steve Zahn, Jesse Williams, Tig Notaro and Zoe Chao along with Wesley Kimmel. The film heads to Netflix Friday, Feb. 10.
Peter (Kutcher) lives in New York where he looks forward to change in his consulting job and love life. Debbi (Witherspoon) lives in Los Angeles with her son Jack (Kimmel), and she clings to structure and routine. The two are exact opposites, but they have been best friends for 20 years ever since they had a one-night stand that didn’t go anywhere. Peter loves “The Cars,” and the film contains quite a few of their hits.
For Debbie, McKenna wrote the film’s original song “Embers” with the film’s composer Siddhartha and Alan DeMoss, who produced and mixed the score.

“Green Book” viewers who are not totally versed in the ways of ’50s and ’60s jazz may come away from the heavily Oscar-nominated movie wondering just how well known and respected the film’s central musical figure, Don Shirley (played by Mahershala Ali), really was in his heyday. The answer: revered enough to have picked up a concert review in Variety that assumed its hepper readers might already be familiar with his prowess.
Shirley was described as “one of the more progressive elements in modern jazz” by Variety‘s critic, who also used the term “far out” to describe his contemporary take on the art form.
The report appeared in the “Nightclub Reviews” section on May 8, 1957 — five years before the events portrayed in “Green Book,” in which the classical and jazz pianist hires Tony Vallelonga (portrayed by Viggo Mortensen) as his driver and bodyguard for a tour of the Mid-West and Deep South.

AMC could be taking a trip to Christmasland in the future. Back in December of 2015, it was revealed that the network was considering developing a TV series based on Joe Hill's supernatural novel NOS4A2, and today AMC announced that it has opened a writers' room for NOS4A2 and two other projects.
Led by Jami O'Brien (Hell on Wheels), who, along with Joe Hill, will serve as an executive producer on the series should it move forward, NOS4A2 is now being developed in the aforementioned writers' room.
O'Brien and her team will work together to write scripts for multiple episodes and a framework for the first season, and if AMC likes the concept and story that O'Brien and company come up with, NOS4A2 could be ordered to series.

As the definition of an independent film has shifted with the ever-expanding budget divide in American filmmaking — particularly Hollywood cutting back on its mid-range projects — when it comes time for awards season, it’s often only the highest profile of “indie films” that get recognized. Embers, Claire Carré's philosophical science fiction film, added to its awards caché this past weekend at the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival, winning the Asteroide Award. I was proud to be on the jury, along with Pedro Suoto from MotelX, and film critic Mauro Gervasini. In his review, Ben Umstead described it as a film "that reaches deep inside humanity, inside our collective soul (a collective history beyond memory), searching for that basic instinct, that inherent self beyond self." The physical award is created each year by a local artist, making it even more memorable for the filmmakers. Other notable award winners include Under the Shadow, which was given the Web Critics award from Italian film journalists; Sum of Histories, which won the Méliès d'Argent for Best...

Receiving its online premiere today here at Filmmaker is Iva Gocheva‘s haunting short film, Sunday, an impressionistic portrait of a young Bulgarian woman living in New York who is grappling with all the various impacts — emotional and existential — of her expired visa. It’s the second short from Gocheva, who has been seen most recently on screen, as a lead, in Claire Carre’s sleeper hit, Embers. Here, the Bulgaria-born, New York-based Gocheva writes about her impetus to make the film: I feel this story started from the idea of home and what it means or feels to each of […]...

Netflix apocalypse epic Io sees Captain America cohort Anthony Mackie co-star with Margaret Qualley and Danny Huston.
The film industry has no shortage of dark, dystopian dramas – especially of the Ya (young adult) variety. However, Netflix film Io, similarly sporting apocalyptic tropes, is bypassing theaters to head directly to your streaming delivery device on Netflix, thanks to an exclusive distribution deal with Mandalay Pictures. It will be boosted by an interesting cast, with Marvel's Falcon himself, Anthony Mackie, co-starring up-and-coming ingénue Margaret Qualley, joined by Danny Huston.
Io is a coming-of-age story, something that would seemingly designate it as a member of the Ya category from the outset. However, this isn’t a piece of dystopic fiction in which hunky monsters woo doting debutante protagonists who make puzzling life choices. Rather, it’s about the fate of Earth in a far future in the aftermath of...

There are few greater pleasures than discovering a talented filmmaker at the start of what promises to be a dynamic career in storytelling. Claire Carré is one of those filmmakers, and her directorail debut Embers is one of those films. A Science Fiction yarn that charts the lives of a group of survivors in a world post-memory, Embers releases today on iTunes and VOD platforms stateside. But for those in Los Angeles, it gets a full theatrical release this Friday, August 5th. With richly varied production design and costuming I certainly think Embers warrants the big screen experience. As such, ScreenAnarchy is partnering with Slamdance Presents to giveaway two pairs of tickets for Opening Night and the Big Ideas, Small Budget: Indie Sci-fi panel which...

Among the numerous post-apocalyptic stories in recent years, there are only a handful that tackle the feeling of disconnection and disorientation that comes with living in confused chaos. One of these is Claire Carré’s debut film “Embers,” a film about a group of survivors struggling with sustained short-term memory loss after a global neurological epidemic.

Science Fiction with vision -- and done on a budget no less -- is one of our favorite kinds of cinema to give attention to here at TwitchFilm. Claire Carré's feature debut Embers is exactly one of those indie sci-fi darlings. Not only do we think this, but so do the folks at Slamdance and The Orchard who have struck a joint deal to bringCarré's vision of a world post-memory to big and small screens, alike. Slamdance Presents, the theatrical release wing of the Diy film festival, will be brining Embers to Arclight Hollywood on August 5th, for a week long run of screenings and extra-special Q&As, while The Orcahrd will be doing a VOD day-and-date release. Co-written with Charles Spano, Embers is, as I...

Nabbing Best Actress, Screenplay, Breakthrough Director and Feature noms, Marielle Heller’s Diary of a Teenage Girl leads all Gotham Award nominations with four, while Carol is technically tied with a foursome of mentions as well. With a pre-win (Directors Tribute) accompanied by a trio of noms in the Best Feature, Screenplay and Actress categories, Todd Haynes’ drama will likely find xeroxed nom mentions for both the Indie Spirits and Oscars.
While Rick Alverson’s Entertainment and Sebastien Silva’s Nasty Baby are noticeably absent in what some consider a backhanded compliment of a ceremony, the noms for this year’s Gothams do have some wholeheartedly merited double nom mentions for the Safdie Bros.’ Heaven Knows What, Sean Baker’s Tangerine, Bill Pohlad’s Love & Mercy and Josh Mond’s James White. As we head into December, awards season is well under way, and though we’ll have to wait until the spring for really big fish like the Oscars and the Golden Globes, this month has a respectable number of ceremonies of its own. Last night, celebrities gathered at Cipriani Wall Street in New York for the 2014 Gotham Independent Film Awards.
It was a long, casual ceremony for those in attendance, but when the night finally wrapped up, few could argue with the results. Birdman spread its wings and took home Best Feature, while Michael Keaton nabbed Best Actor for his revelatory role in the Alejandro G. Iñárritu-directed film. Meanwhile, Julianne Moore continued her unstoppable march to the Oscars, receiving Best Actress for her devastating work as an Alzheimer’s-afflicted linguistics professor in Still Alice. And Laura Poitras was awarded Best Documentary Feature for her eye-opening Edward Snowden doc Citizenfour.

The 31st edition of the Sundance Film Festival kicks off on January 22nd with Park City and Salt Lake City playing host to some of the more innovative, thought-provoking narrative and non-fiction films of 2015. Last year, a Jenga tall order of 4,057 features and 8,161 shorts were submitted. Now let’s think about those numbers for a second.
Twenty years ago, Terry Zwigoff’s Crumb claimed the Grand Jury Prize Documentary award, Living in Oblivion‘s Tom Dicillo was honored with the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award, and Edward Burns’ micro-budgeted The Brothers McMullen (there is a read-worthy, lively, eleventh hour account on how it was submitted to the fest in Ted Hope’s “Hope...

Deemed as his career best, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood leads all nominations for the 24th Gotham Independent Film Awards with winks in the Best Feature, Best Actor (Ethan Hawke), Best Actress (Patricia Arquette) and Breakthrough Actor (Ellar Coltrane) while Birdman, Nightcrawler, Under the Skin and Dear White People technically place second with two noms a piece in the five possible categories.
