Creators and fans have come to learn all too well what it feels like when an old show or film that used to be available through streaming is suddenly gone, even as we’ve been sold the idea of infinite choice and endless libraries at our fingertips.
Now though even older examples of TV history are disappearing in the blink of an eye. Paramount this week has quietly purged much of the content being hosted on several of its cable channels, including Comedy Central, Paramount Network, TV Land, and CMT, all as of Wednesday afternoon. And on Monday, MTVNews.com was completely removed from the web, with it erasing years of music news articles, columns, and features.
As a result, you can no longer find full episodes or clips of classic Comedy Central late night shows such as “The Colbert Report,” “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore,” or “The Opposition with Jordan Klepper...

The vast repository of content on Comedy Central’s website — dating back 25 years — has been removed by parent company Paramount Global, in a move to push fans to Paramount+.
The site, at comedycentral.com, has until now hosted clips from all episodes of “The Daily Show” since 1999, as well as segments from the full 11-season run of Stephen Colbert’s “The Colbert Report,” among other video content. Thousands of “Daily Show” clips remain free to watch on YouTube, but those go back only to 2015.
The move to scrub content from Comedy Central comes after Paramount similarly pulled the full archive of MTV News from the internet on Monday, as well as articles from CMT.
As of Wednesday, Comedy Central’s archived material has vanished from its website. A notice on the site says, “While episodes of most Comedy Central series are no longer available on this website, you can watch...

Robin Thede, creator and star of “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” has set a new comedy series for development at HBO.
The half-hour project is titled “Disengagement,” and centers on the prestigious Cole family after a very public and embarrassing business implosion shatters their perfect Midwest image. Per the logline, it was just an image, because behind closed doors, even their dysfunction has dysfunction, proving family is the ultimate pyramid scheme.
Thede serves as writer and executive producer of the series, which she is developing via the overall deal she signed with HBO in 2022. Meghan Cheek produces on behalf of For Better or Words, Inc.
Thede began her career performing sketch comedy and went on to write for programs like the BET Awards and the NAACP Image Awards. When she joined the staff of “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore,” she became the first Black women ever to serve as...

Larry Wilmore knows late-night comedy. First playing the ‘Senior Black Correspondent’ on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart before moving on to his own Comedy Central series, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, he has years of experience in the unruly world of late-night comedy. He also followed The Nightly Show with Wilmore, a weekly streaming talk show for Peacock. So it is no surprise then, that Deadline announced he will take those skills to Primetime, with a new ABC series based on his talk show experience, called Lately. The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore (Credit: Bryan Bedder / ©Comedy Central / courtesy Everett Collection) Wilmore will serve as executive producer, writer, and star on the series, which is described as “a behind-the-scenes look at the upstairs-downstairs dynamics of the people who work at a late-night talk show.” Wilmore has an overall deal with Universal Studio Group, and Universal Television will produce the show.

“The Colbert Report” came to a close in December 2014. Since then, nothing has stuck in Comedy Central’s 11:30 p.m. time slot.
That trend continued on Friday, when the Viacom cable channel announced it was ending Jordan Klepper’s “The Opposition” after just one season. Comedy Central isn’t sending Klepper as a talent packing, however, as he’s getting a weekly primetime series at the network.
After the finale of “The Opposition” airs on June 28, repeats of “The Office” will temporarily take over 11:30 until Comedy Central comes up with a permanent (as permanent as any of these plug-ins have been) solution for the half-hour. It’s been a familiar pattern, one that is hopefully solved by the latest round of late-night development over there.

First daughter Ivanka Trump is sending her best wishes to husband and wife-to-be Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, though her belated congratulations have critics questioning whether she’s actually trying to score an invitation to the royal wedding for her and husband Jared Kushner.
On Friday, the 36-year-old special assistant to President Donald Trump tweeted out love for the couple, who announced their engagement on Nov. 27.
“Wishing Meghan and Prince Harry a lifetime of love, laughter and happiness together,” she wrote over the course of two tweets, while also sharing an article that Harry and Meghan had chosen May 19 as their wedding day.

As host of “The Apprentice,” one thing eluded Donald Trump: an Emmy. The fact that the Television Academy never awarded him one drove Trump — whom you might know is now the President of the United States of America — completely bonkers.
Trump wanted an Emmy bad enough that he went on the Hollywood campaign trail in 2008, taking trade newspaper reporters (including, um, this one) to lunch in an attempt to curry attention and grab a win for “The Apprentice.” But that was in the middle of “The Amazing Race’s” hot streak. Ultimately the closest Trump came to Emmy glory was singing the “Green Acres” theme with Megan Mullally on stage at the 2006 ceremony.
It’s a bit ironic, then, that Trump may play a hand in which shows are nominated — and ultimately win — this year’s Emmy for Outstanding Variety Talk Series.

2017-04-04T12:50:12-07:00Jordan Klepper to Take Over 'Nightly Show'
Stephen Colbert spun his role as The Daily Show's smarmy white guy into his own Comedy Central show, and now his spiritual successor, Jordan Klepper, is fulfilling that same destiny.
On Tuesday, Comedy Central announced that Klepper, who joined the Daily Show lineup in 2014, will take over the 11:30 p.m. Et/Pt time slot formerly held by The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore this fall. (Donald Trump impersonator Anthony Atamanuik will keep the spot warm on Thursdays starting April 27 when The President Show premieres.)
"The choice to entrust me with the 11:30 p.m. timeslot is both incredibly humbling and deeply disturbing,” Klepper declared in a statement. “Without a doubt, it has utterly destroyed my confidence in Comedy Central’s decision-making acumen. Dear God, now I have to work with these fools.”

Donald Trump hasn’t yet gone after “The Daily Show,” and that’s fine by host Trevor Noah.
“I don’t think Trump’s attack is the mark of a good show,” he told IndieWire last month, after taping an episode in his Midtown Manhattan studio. “People always go, ‘He’s attacking ‘SNL.’ Actually, he is attacking Alec Baldwin. That’s what gets to him, the fact that that’s whom he aspires to. That’s a New York guy. That’s the face of fame for him. He has his peers that he wants to be associated with, and everyone else he doesn’t really care about. That’s part of the problem of Donald Trump. He lives in his own world.”
And it turns out, Noah is doing very well without Trump’s seal of disapproval. Just 18 months after Noah took over the Comedy Central franchise from Jon Stewart,...

Each year, the Sundance Film Festival rolls out an enviable lineup of jury members — billed as “experts in film, art, culture and science” — to dole out awards to the feature-length works shown at the festival. In total, 28 prizes (and sometimes more!) will be announced at a ceremony on January 28 (as ever, Short Film Awards will be announced at a separate ceremony on January 24). The festival has now announced this year’s various jury members, including actors, filmmakers, producers, writers and other luminaries (and, yes, plenty of Sundance alums pop up amongst their ranks).
Additionally, the festival has also announced that actress, comedian, correspondent and podcast host Jessica Williams will host the annual awards. Jones seems poised to have a very busy Sundance indeed, as she also toplines James Strouse’s premiere “The Incredible Jessica James,” which will close out the festival the night before.

2016 was a watershed year for the genre defined as “late night,” even as we saw a redefinition of what late night television might be (thanks to Netflix and Hulu), as well as an explosion of new talent taking on the format, including (Gasp!) women. While each host had their own approach to tackling current events and more, in looking back at the last 12 months it was relatively easy to pinpoint a defining moment for each of them — for better, and for worse.

Watch Jon Stewart's funny yet touching appearance on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore's TV series finale on Comedy Central. Wilmore only learned of his show's cancellation, early this week. After having received potent potables from Samantha Bee and Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah sent Wilmore some (woefully non-alcoholic) pastries. John Oliver softened that blow by sending a magnum of Champagne, which Stewart tried to nick."What did I miss? What's going on?" Stewart asked. When Wilmore admitted his old boss missed a lot, Stewart added, "What are we doing, next week?" After Wilmore informed him it was the last show, Stewart cracked, "Oh my God, what did you do -- piss off Peter Thiel?" which is a reference to the demise of...

1 | Which accomplishment made you feel lazier: Ashton Eaton’s decathlon gold medal or sprinter Usain Bolt’s successful defense of his Fastest Man Alive title?
2 | How disheartening is it to see half-empty stadiums as the athletes compete? (And no, we’re not buying any of the organizers’ explanations. They went to get food… and never came back?)

On Emmy nominations morning, many were shocked to learn that Crackle's Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee — the Jerry Seinfeld web series shot with three GoPro cameras and this season comprising six episodes, each ranging from 16 to 23 minutes — was nominated for best variety talk series over several late-night stars: CBS' The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, NBC's Late Night With Seth Meyers, TBS' Full Frontal With Samantha Bee and Conan, and Comedy Central's The Daily Show With Trevor Noah and The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore (which was canceled Aug. 14). Comedy Central may have pulled the plug on “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore,” but Jon Stewart, the former host of “The Daily Show,” made a point to tell Wilmore on his final show how good of a job he did hosting the half-hour series since January of 2015.

“What you my friend were tasked to do you have done and done beautifully,” Stewart said after making a surprise appearance on the show Thursday. “You gave voice to underserved voices in the media arena. Sad now.
Yesterday was the last episode of The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore.
(Note: As I write this, there are still three more shows. I’m going to assume that, if something newsworthy happens on-air between my deadline and publication, my editor will let me revise this accordingly.)
The Nightly Show replaced The Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert’s Comedy Central show a few months, before Trevor Noah took over The Daily Show from Jon Stewart. Both Wilmore and Noah had been featured correspondents on The Daily Show, as had Colbert a decade earlier.
I love Jon Stewart. He is the man my mother wanted me to marry (even if he’s a decade younger than I am). I also love Stephen Colbert. He’s really, really smart and he can sing. I was sad when they were no longer hosting their own fake-news shows.

More potentially bad news for Comedy Central, if we’re all reading a recent Tweet by Amy Schumer properly.
Schumer told fans late Wednesday night, via her Twitter account, that “we aren’t making the show anymore. There are no writers for it.” The comedian then posted a Tweet from a fan who said she would miss the show.

Does that mean “Inside Amy Schumer,” which has already been renewed for a fifth season (to air in 2017), is instead done and finished? Schumer’s publicist and a Comedy Central rep were not immediately available to respond or clarify.
The tweet in question was the culmination of several responses that Schumer made throughout the day in response to comments made by “Inside Amy Schumer” writer (or former writer) Kurt Metzger. On social media, Metzger wrote several controversial statements about rape allegations,...

Bottoms up! Upon learning The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore had been cancelled after two seasons on Comedy Central, Wilmore's friend and former Daily Show colleague Samantha Bee sent the cast and crew three cases of wine, from her TBS late-night TV series, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. Check out a photo, below and the shows' social media exchanges, below.During Tuesday's episode, Wilmore credited Bee for the gift saying, "“Oh, man. We had so many plans for tonight. We were going to write this big, fun show, right? Larry Wilmore’s “Nightly Show” is ending, but he doesn’t necessarily think it was the show’s handling of race that led to its less-than-stellar ratings. “I mean, our numbers were great when Jon Stewart was there, so I don’t know. I could make the argument that Jon not being our lead-in hurt our numbers,” Wilmore told Vulture. One could read the Stewart reference as a swipe at current “Daily Show” host Trevor Noah, who has failed to match the ratings of his predecessor behind the Comedy Central news desk. That was a quick trip around the track for “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore.” Comedy Central announced Monday that it is canceling the late-night news satire, less than two years after it premiered as a high-profile replacement for “The Colbert Report.” Wilmore’s last original episode will be Thursday.
