A few days ago, The Hollywood Reporter published a story saying that in addition to developing another "Top Gun" sequel, Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise is "exploring a follow-up" to "Days of Thunder," the 1990 racing movie he starred in for director Tony Scott. At a glance, you can see how that decision might make sense: 2022's "Top Gun: Maverick," another decades-later sequel to a Cruise-Scott collaboration, was a gigantic box office hit, so naturally Cruise is interested in revisiting his old characters, like NASCAR driver Cole Trickle, to see if there's any more gold to mine from them. Currently, there are no writers, directors, or other stars attached, so this is very much a "Cruise wants to do it" type of story, and there's nothing set in stone quite yet.

But there are a few reasons a "Days of Thunder" sequel may not make a ton of sense in 2025 or beyond.

Exclusive: Andrea Iervolino, the Italian producer of sports car biopics Ferrari, Lamborghini: The Man Behind The Legend and the upcoming Maserati movie, is revving up a biopic of Ettore Bugatti.

Bugatti is slated to film late next year in Italy and France for Iervolino’s new banner, The Andrea Iervolino Company.

The movie is set to tell the life story of Bugatti, the founder of the iconic automobile company, who was known for transforming the automotive world with his creative genius and relentless dedication to design and technology. The Italian-born French designer and manufacturer also designed aeroplane engines and was no stranger to tragedy: Bugatti’s son, Jean, was killed on 11 August 1939 at the age of 30 while testing a Bugatti car near the family’s factory HQ in Germany.

Iervolino is in talks with writers and directors on the project, which will feature a U.S. and international cast and be English-language.

The producers were longtime partners at prolific Italian production and distribution company Ilbe (Iervolino & Lady Bakardi Entertainment), but Bacardi is unhappy following the latter’s recent announcement of his new company.

Iervolino announced earlier this week that he was stepping back from Ilbe to launch film and TV outfit The Andrea Iervolino Company (Taic). Among projects noted on the slate were a Maserati biopic written and directed by Bobby Moresco, and the biopic Ferrari vs Mercedes, also directed by Moresco.

Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s fifth collaboration has been shrouded in secrecy since it was announced in January. Now eager film fans are getting their first look at “Sinners” — and all its bloody goodness. The film opens March 7, 2025 from Warner Bros.

The highly-anticipated horror thriller is based on an original script by Coogler, with the project set in the 1930s Jim Crow era-South and filmed earlier this year in the New Orleans area. But beyond those basic details, everything about the project — from the title to its plot — had been kept under wraps. Updated: Italian producer Andrea Iervolino — whose credits include Michael Mann’s “Ferrari,” the Johnny Depp-starrer “Waiting for the Barbarians” and “Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend” — has parted ways with business partner Monika Bacardi and is launching a new film and TV outfit called The Andrea Iervolino Company.

Iervolino and Bacardi were partners in Ilbe, the studio they co-founded and jointly ran for 13 years.

“With the launch of Taic, Iervolino has stepped down as president and CEO of Ilbe, the studio he co-founded and ran for the last decade, to focus on Taic,” Iervolino said in a statement. “He will remain available in a non-exclusive capacity to assist Ilbe with the transition of a new CEO.”

No reason for the falling out between Iervolino and Bacardi was provided in the statement.

Longlegs distributor and production company Neon has picked up the worldwide rights for Shelby Oaks, the debut feature film from YouTube creator Chris Stuckmann.

A hybrid of conventional horror storytelling and found footage, the film’s about a woman looking for missing sister, the co-host of a supernatural podcast who vanished with her two fellow investigators.

Stuckmann, perhaps best known for his successful movie review channel on YouTube, made Shelby Oaks independently, having managed to crowdfund an impressive $1.4m on Kickstarter. That sum set a new record for a horror project on the platform. Stuckmann both co-wrote and directed the film, with production taking place in Ohio in 2022.

Legendary director Michael Mann has launched his own collection of archival content surrounding his 2023 film “Ferrari.”

The new interactive website offers a new glimpse into the influential “Heat” filmmaker’s process, including 20 mini documentary videos detailing Mann and his actors’ work from training and rehearsals through shooting, camera and art department strategies to impact drama, the design and engineering of replica race cars, camera systems, the tragic crash at Guidizzolo and more.

The archive also includes Mann’s annotated script pages, notes to himself on intent, his photo storyboards and captured audio.

Starting today, access to the “Ferrari” archives can be purchased for $65 on Mann’s website. Each user will own a unique access pass allowing them to enter and explore the archive’s extensive collection at their own pace and in perpetuity.

The first half of 2024 was not as kind to horror at the box office as it has been in recent years. In the pandemic era, horror had been arguably the most reliable genre around, particularly in 2022 and 2023. It wasn't until the blockbuster opening barely posted by "A Quiet Place: Day One" that a genre flick truly broke out this year. The question is, can Neon keep the hot streak alive when director Oz Perkins' "Longlegs" hits theaters? Hailed as one of the scariest movies of the year with near-universal praise from critics, it is certainly well positioned to do so, but it is going to be all about managing expectations.

It's important to understand that this was never going to be the kind of movie to make $20 million on opening weekend. It's a small movie hoping to do well for itself against a small budget, most likely in the $10 million range.

Patrick Dempsey (Grey’s Anatomy) has joined the cast of Paramount+ with Showtime’s Dexter: Original Sin in a series regular role. In the Dexter prequel series, Dempsey will play Aaron Spencer, the Captain of the Miami Metro Homicide department who has a decades-long relationship with Harry Morgan (Christian Slater).

Italy’s reformed audiovisual tax credit will be open for applications by “the start of summer”, Lucia Borgonzoni, undersecretary of state to the ministry of culture, has told Screen.

Borgonzoni said the changes would focus the tax credit on productions that shot in Italy, with Italian talent, did not overuse AI, and were aimed at a theatrical release.

“Anora,” Sean Baker’s comic look at an exotic dancer and sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, will hit theaters next fall. The film will open in limited release on Oct. 18 from Neon.
