When it comes to witches and their representation in film, things have for the most part ventured into becoming pretty stale. With the exception of films like The Witch, The Lords of Salem, and Cherry Tree, genre films dealing with witchcraft, covens, and so on tend to fall into the stereotypical silliness that pop culture has put on the idea of witches and similar themes and figures. It takes something special to change that, to offer viewers a fresh look and approach, and thankfully, that’s exactly what we get with the Keith Thomas-helmed short film, Arkane.
Focusing on a couple with less than noble intentions of breaking into an elderly woman’s home to extract some of her blood, Arkane gives its viewers not only an interesting approach and aesthetic, but it’s a combination of beautifully eerie cinematography and a synth wave-based score that makes the film feel completely unique.

It feels like almost every new movie is coming out on April 5th—and yes, that is probably a bit of an exaggeration, but still, we do have over 20 horror and sci-fi titles arriving on Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday and there’s no denying that’s a bunch.
Of course the big title this week is Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but there are also several great indie horror films being released this week, including Ava’s Possessions, The Hallow, Cherry Tree, #Horror, and Creep, which is finally makes its way to DVD as well. Arrow Video has several special edition releases coming out on Tuesday, including The Black Cat, Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key and the Death Walks Twice box set.
Other notable releases for April 5th include Anguish, Deadly Weekend, The Entity, The Tell-Tale Heart and Journey to the Seventh Planet.

Second feature from The Pool director to be co-produced by Potemkino.
Amsterdam Gothic, the second feature from director Chris W. Mitchell (The Pool), has landed a production deal with Belgium’s Potemkino at the Frontières international co-pro market in Brussels (Mar 30 – Apr 1).
The Dutch-Belgian co-production is based on a draft script from the late American-Australian screenwriter Everett de Roche (Nine Miles Down), who passed away in 2014 following a battle with cancer.
Director Mitchell completed the screenplay. Producers are Jan Doense and Herman Slagter for Dutch production outfit House of Netherhorror (The Pool, Cherry Tree), with Potemkino’s Peter De Maegd also now attached as a producer as part of the deal.
The development of the English-Dutch language project has been supported by the Dutch Film Fund, and is raising finance for a $2.7m (€2.4m) production budget.

Witchcraft captures an obscure subgenre of horror that’s rarely represented through similar methods (look at such varying titles as All Cheerleaders Die/The Witch/Lords Of Salem). Halloween imagery always includes green-faced, cackling witches, broomsticks and all, but films tend to focus more on their cultish behavior.
Ireland’s latest genre effort, Cherry Tree, is another such film about dark magic and satanic worship, yet even with Clive-Barker-inspired visuals, these deceiving looks are hollow to the core. It’s as terrifying as something like The Moth Diaries or Embrace Of The Vampire, which of course means there’s no terror at all – just centipedes, witches, and a fixation on cherries that’ll have your empty tummy rumbling in dissatisfaction.
Naomi Battrick stars as Faith, a misunderstood loner who struggles with her social status. Matters only worsen when she learns that her already ailing father, Sean (Sam Hazeldine), has received...

★☆☆☆☆ David Keating's silly and unsuccessful folklore horror film, Cherry Tree (2015), suffers from a list of ailments no old crone in a woodland cottage, with her library of esoteric books, magic spells and potions, could ever save or transform into a superior version. She'd look the film straight in the eye and wish it the best of luck. The issues and problems cripple what could have been a gnarly genre piece. Because everybody loves sexy witches being evil, right? Among many, one of the most peculiar creative decisions is to pretend it wasn't filmed in Ireland, with the cast suppressing their Irish lilts in favour of, sometimes, strained attempts at Rp or Thames Valley intonations.

Cherry Tree is another film coming this way via Ireland. Irish director David Keating is helming this feature, along with writer Brendan McCarthy. The film begins with a struggling family and a witches' coven. The film stars Anna Walton (Mutant Chronicles), Sam Hazeldine (The Monuments Men), Naomi Battrick and Patrick Gibson. The film's first poster is here. At the heart of the film grows a cherry tree. This cherry tree can help Faith's (Battrick) father, who is slowly dying. The tree's powers promise rebirth, but Faith must make a sacrifice, first. The film's poster shows a witch's gnarled hand and fruit from the tree. Reminiscent of an ancient biblical tale, evil tempts a young woman to eat from a forbidden tree. From the creators of Wake Wood, Cherry Tree will be released later this year! Release Date: 2014. Director: David Keating. Writer: Brendan McCarthy. Cast: Anna Walton, Sam Hazeldine, Naomi Battrick and Patrick Gibson.
