Chinese cinemas were largely empty again over the weekend, allowing Hong Kong crime thriller “Project Gutenberg” to enjoy its third frame as the top-scoring film.

The cumulative total of the top 10 films amounted to just $41.2 million, according to data from Ent Group. That is the second lowest weekend this year.

Chinese drama “Baby,” which has its world premiere this week at the Toronto Film Festival, is a disturbing look at how disabled children are frequently abandoned in China. Fortunately, director Liu Jie has found multiple ways of making the subject palatable.

Liu, who previously made social drama “Courthouse on Horseback” and more mainstream mystery thriller “Hide and Seek,” says that unfortunately, the film is based on real events. Liu became aware of the plight of disabled children when a friend was given three days by local authorities to decide whether his newborn child should live or die. After that introduction, in 2009 Liu visited a village with 600 families and 1,200 children in foster care.

Tuesday Update, Writethru with actuals: Universal’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again made its debut at the international box office smorgasbord this weekend, belting out $42.9M in 41 markets. The summer sequel, directed by Ol Parker, topped the 2008 movie’s start in 34 of those and danced to No. 1 in 24 openings. Combined with domestic, the sun-kissed origins story kicked off a global launch of $77.9M.

Overall, Mamma Mia 2 came in at No. 2 overseas this weekend, with Universal/Legendary’s Dwayne Johnson-starrer Skyscraper the name of the game in China. Hipgnosis Songs Fund Limited, the company recently launched by former Elton John and Guns N’ Roses manager Merck Mercuriadis, successfully floated on the London Stock Exchange Wednesday — and celebrated by buying up 75% of The-Dream’s catalog for $23 million. The news was first reported by Music Business Worldwide.

The Ipo was observed by Mercuriadis, The-Dream and legendary producer/musician Nile Rodgers. Last month the company announced that it had raised more than $260 million to acquire copyrights. It will be run by Mercuriadis with an advisory board that includes Rodgers as well as Jack White manager Ian Montone and Lava Records founder Jason Flom.

Grey's Anatomy Season 14 was a huge improvement after a lackluster and disappointing Grey's Anatomy Season 13. In many ways, the series got back to the basics. It gave us strong character arcs and friendships, interesting medical cases, relationship drama, and more. 

It also made a splash when the news broke that two fan-favorites would be departing by the season's end. Looking back and reviewing the season, it was evident that episodes churned out after that shocking news (and an unpopular 'ship becoming canon) weren't received very well. Yikes!

A report commissioned by the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain has found a wide gap between male and female writers working across film and TV — with no significant improvement over a period of 10 years. Among the findings, 16% of all working film screenwriters in the UK are female while 14% of primetime TV drama is predominantly written by women.

The report, titled “Gender Inequality and Screenwriters,” gathered data from over 30 sources and examined the decade from 2005-2015. Figures reveal “the serious lack of authentic female voices and their opportunity to tell their stories.” More than half of respondents to a survey of Wggb members conducted by the authors of the report suggested they had seen evidence of discrimination over the course of their careers.

Colin Firth and Julie Walters are set to star in a new version of The Secret Garden from Heyday Films and Studiocanal, who previously collaborated on Paddington.

The script from Jack Thorne is based on Frances Hodgson Burnett’s 1911 classic novel, but moves the story from the Edwardian era to 1947, on the eve of Partition in India, and in the aftermath of WW2 in Britain.

Director Marc Munden is known for his TV work, including National Treasure which won him a best drama Bafta, The Mark Of Cain, The Devil’s Whore and Utopia.

Principal photography is getting underway Monday on Studiocanal and Heyday Films’ The Secret Garden with Colin Firth and Julie Walters starring. As Deadline revealed in January, Marc Munden is directing the new take on the classic children’s novel.

In a recent interview to Khalid Mohamed of Mumbai Mirror, the actor made a shocking revelation – she was raped by a man, supposedly her guardian, when she was shooting for Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke in Chennai. She was only six years old at the time. Daisy’s story reveals the dark underbelly of the lives of children thrust into glamour and fame very early on. What made her come forward with her story, sixty years after she was sexually assaulted, is the increased number of children who are now finding themselves pushed way too young into the limelight, thanks to reality shows, TV programmes and films. Daisy wants parents and guardians to be aware of the dangers such an industry poses to children and keep a protective eye on them. Daisy’s story Daisy, who made her last appearance in the Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer Happy New Year, is by no means new to the film industry. She has been seen in a number of supporting roles in TV as well as films. The peak of her stardom perhaps was when she was a child actor in the 1950s, starring in iconic films like Naya Daur and Dhool Ka Phool. After she made her debut with a Marathi film called Baby, ‘uncle Nazar’ accompanied her to Chennai for the shoot of another film. “I can recall the incident only in flashes, but I do remember the killing pain, and the visual of him belting me. The next morning, I was back at the studio as if nothing had happened,” she said. Her mother’s ambition for making Daisy a star went well into her teen years. In another instance, when Daisy was 15, she was made to ‘pad up’ with a new-fangled sponge, and left alone with producer Mallikchand Kochar, who was planning a film called Mere Huzoor. Mallikchand sat with Daisy on the sofa and allegedly started touching her. “I knew what was on his mind,” she recounts. And then, she took out the sponge and handed it to him. Mallikchand was furious. “Now why did I do that? Because, I’ve always seen the funnier side of things,” Daisy remarked. Not all glamour and fun for child artistes Daisy’s story is just one among the many of Indian child prodigies who are pushed into the limelight for their talents, way too early. Gita Aravamudan wrote for Firstpost that children forced into the “hard and unforgiving glare” of the limelight by ambitious parents, may learn to survive in the industry, but it comes with a price. Gita recounts the many child prodigies – singers, dancers, actors – she has seen and interviewed during her career and what she observed. The first she saw was Ravi Kiran, who came from a family of renowned musicians and gave his first performance at the age of two in 1969. Reality TV and children It is increasingly easy for children to become prey to predators from the show business, thanks to the number of reality shows which have come up – both on TV and online. It aims to extract laughs from its audience through ignorant statements made by these children.
