witchy brew for Halloween
Greetings again from the darkness. A fun-filled film meant only to entertain is always welcome. Traditionally these show up during the summer months, but timing this one closer to Halloween makes complete sense. Written by Bryan Schulz (the grandson of the late Peanuts creator Charles Schulz) and Cornelius Uliano (his collaborator on THE PEANUTS MOVIE, 2015), the film is directed by David Henrie, best known for his role in "How I Met Your Mother". It's his first feature film gaining distribution, and it doesn't disappoint.
It's 1997 on Martha's Vineyard (although it's filmed in Southport, North Carolina) and budding journalist Noah (Mason Thames, THE BLACK PHONE, 2021) is desperately trying to follow in his recently deceased father's footsteps. However, the local newspaper editor (Kevin James) wants nothing to do with the kid's ideas. Noah suspects an evil presence in town at just about the same time Miss Halverson (Lorraine Bracco, "The Sopranos") arrives for an extended stay at the B&B run by Noah's mother (Nora Zehetner, BRICK, 2005).
Not to give anything away, but witchy things start happening. Noah's baseball teammate Ben (Noah Cottrell) is night-swimming with a lady friend (Lilah Pate), and a fright leaves him "with the lights on and no one home" (as it's described). It's summertime, so baseball is a recurring theme for Noah and his friends Eugene (Julian Lerner, the new "The Wonder Years") and Sammy (Abby James Witherspoon), with familiar face Patrick Renna (THE SANDLOT) as the league umpire. The three friends begin their own investigation, but soon enough, Noah is on his own ... at least until he joins forces with retired detective Gene (2-time Oscar winner Mel Gibson). Gene has long been the subject of local rumors and mostly keeps to himself; but Noah's work piques his interest, and the two share a form of grief.
Bits and pieces of IT (2017), THE GOONIES (1995), and more recently, "Stranger Things" all play a role, and we have references to Mulder and Scully from "The X-Files", as well as a nostalgic feel that gives this more the feel of a childhood adventure than a true horror story. However, the creep factor is strong enough to earn the PG-13 rating. It should also be noted that Mel Gibson has been 'canceled' in some circles, yet he brings the necessary gravitas to elevate the film. It also seems safe to predict that young Mason Thames has a nice acting career ahead of him. Stories revolving around neighborhood legends and myths are quite common, and this one chooses to blend the supernatural with local police cases. So, if you are up for some cinematic fun times around Halloween, director David Henrie is all about treats, not tricks.
Opening in theaters on October 4, 2024.

Sometimes an evil witch is refreshing
As much as I'm a fan of good witches like Sabrina or the sisters from Charmed, sometimes it's nice to have a witch just be evil. I also like that this movie takes itself seriously. There is some light jokes but it doesn't take away from the danger they are facing.
While the pacing could be better, the story was well written and acted, particularly Mason Thames, who plays the main guy, and Mel Gibson. The characters feel believable and they get some development and a few heartfelt moments. One might compare it to Are You Afraid Of The Dark? In that way. The ending was fun and wrapped things up nicely.

Fun Starter Horror for Kids, Not Boring for Adults
Monster Summer is like The Sandlot kids taking on the supernatural. It serves as a great introduction to horror films (and Mel Gibson) for kids and preteens.
Even if the story is familiar, I really enjoyed it. It isn't made for someone my age, but the writing and direction feels very Spielbergian. The characters are way above average for a family movie.
Also, there's a twist I can't believe I didn't see coming. If I were a kid, I would've called it one of my favorite movies because I always found Are You Afraid of the Dark? And Goosebumps to be lacking the bite that this movie has.
Spooky season popcorn fun for all.

An unexpected surprise
I went to MONSTER SUMMER expecting nothing but left the theatre totally satisfied. Mel Gibson does not phone this in considering the impression his billing suggests. He delivers a nuanced performance that makes the most fantastic elements of the plot totally believable. Lorraine Bracco, Kevin James and the rest of the cast and crew all deliver. Unfortunately the distribution pattern of this movie appears to be what in the 70's would have been a planned tax write off. It's a shame the movie has thrills and heart and I'm afraid it will be streaming next week.mel Gibson and MONSTER SUMMER DESERVES.

Awsome
This a movie you can watch over and over and not get tired of it . It should have been advertised better because it will become a classic and cult film when it hits the t.v. Reminds you of a cross between the goonies and stranger things so good lots of fun. Great job Mel and the kids. The humor and action , mystery and the a some ending left it open for another one in the future. So so good. One of l and my wife's favorites go see it know it's worth it. Was such a good movie that had you guessing who the villain is and what was there reasons. It so sad that movies that deserve my attention and previews instead of these stupid movies they advertise that are forgettable. Please go see you will come being very satisfied.

This was AWESOME fun and with deeper meaning!
This movie was totally incredible in the genre and market it aims for. The acting from Mel is just top notch. The characters are loveable and hate-able (as intended). It reminded me of a much more suspenseful Goonies at times.
This wasn't boring at all either. The plot was really clear and just delivered in a way that was reminiscent of 80's or 90's movies. I will watch this again in the future and will recommend to others.
I laughed, chuckled at some of the comedic references. I couldn't help but to think of subliminal messaging about the need for protecting today's children from "monsters." The movie was well made and will definitely get organic acclaim for years to come. I am not saying that it is an impactful masterpiece, but it is just a solid movie that could easily become someone's favorite.
I would love a sequel to this.

Breathe of fresh air
Monster Summer is a return to fun story telling , if you yearn for movies like goonies or monster squad this one gives you a fun adventure with a surprising amount of heart and a touching under tone. All the actors do a good job with their roles and it's one of those movies that just entertains you and let you forget about the real world without feeling like it's lecturing you or having a hidden agenda. The preview is a little misleading as to what's going on which added to the fun. It's a good movie for the family as there's nothing too scary or to suggestive. I would love to see Hollywood make more movies like this and just bring back entertaining movies that don't involve superheroes and have a nice heartfelt message. I would definitely recommend seeing this movie.

There's Something Rotten In Mayberry...
"Monster Summer," is an absolute joy to watch and I can't wait to take the family to watch it again. It has all the ingredients reminiscent of Stranger Things, The Goonies, and E. T.
This film takes place in sunny Southport and it chose the perfect location to set it's coming of age, monster in a small town story. Mel Gibson and Mason Thames have amazing chemistry and I hope to see a sequel in the near future. There's plenty of Monsters and we all need a Mel Gibson type to help us fight them!
Well done, Mel Gibson! I hope to see more from this cast and this director. Go support this film with a movie ticket as soon as you can!

Old fashioned, nostalgic summer fun!
"Monster Summer" is a delightful and wholesome family movie that blends nostalgia and excitement in a way that recalls classic films like The Goonies and The Sandlot, while adding a modern touch of supernatural thrills reminiscent of Stranger Things. It's a perfect pick for tweens and up, offering family-friendly fun with just enough spooky moments to keep viewers on edge, without crossing into gory or overly frightening territory. The film excels in presenting solid values, as the characters navigate friendship, courage, teamwork, redemption, etc..
Mel Gibson shines in his role, bringing depth and charm to the film, while the supporting cast and surprise cameos keep the plot engaging and fresh. The movie strikes a great balance between adventure, heart, and suspense, keeping the audience invested from start to finish. Its twists and turns are well-timed, and the jump scares are enough to thrill younger audiences without overwhelming them.
In an era of high-budget, effects-driven blockbusters, Monster Summer stands out for delivering old-fashioned, feel-good entertainment that the whole family can enjoy together. It's a wonderful throwback to the golden age of summer adventure films, filled with memorable moments and characters that are sure to stick with viewers long after the credits roll. Whether you're looking for some light-hearted escapism or a movie night that will bring the family closer, Monster Summer is a perfect choice.

Don't listen to some of the critics its a fun family thriller
Monster Summer is a great movie! It does an excellent job of keeping the viewers engaged the whole time. If your expecting a fun light thriller you can take your teenagers/family to then this is for you. It's really difficult these days to find a movie that pleases both adults and kids. It has great performances by the by the main cast Mason Thames and Mel Gibson. There are also notable performances with the side characters and a twist ending. This is a definite must see with family/friends and don't go with some of the critic reviews. If more movies like this come out then families with kids 12+ can go more often to the theaters.

The kids loved this and do did I!
The movie had lots of twists and turns, and the kids were sitting at the edge of their seats. I think this will be one of those movies that will be a family Halloween tradition to watch. Director did a great job with cast and filming. Mel Gibson and Mason Thames had great chemistry. The scenes and locations were beautiful. There was so also some funny adult humor and definitely some gasping moments. I would recommend this movie to kids and adults that want to go to see a good movie with clean fun and with no agenda. So refreshing in this day and age to see this type of moviie. Reminded me of Goonies.
A GREAT Halloween movie for kids
Monster Summer kicked off my family's month-long Halloween festivities! It had the right amount of suspense to keep the kids engaged, (even jumped a few times!) but without feeling overwhelmed or filled with fear. The kids had a ball and we parents were able to watch worry-free (for a change) since there was nothing inappropriate in it. The actors do not disappoint. Mel Gibson top-knotch as always. Lorraine Bracco, Mason Thames, great job. And thank you David Henrie for making a family-friendly film and cheers to many more. Overall, this was a very pleasant, very charming, fun family night at the movies! Yay!
