Jackie Chan was set to appear in the film. However, due to scheduling conflicts and his son Jaycee Cho-Ming Chan's drug arrest, he declined. Later, Andy Lau stepped in.
The film was originally titled "Old Soldier."
This was Sammo Kam-Bo Hung's first directing outing since Once Upon a Time in China and America (1997) and Mr. Nice Guy (1997) in 1997.
