Tedious Melodrama with some demonic serving on top. It has the back and fort circular tragic nonsense copy pasted from the pulp series Supernatural. Except it tries to be the dark and profound version of that forgettable pleasure, forgoing any humour or light pop corn moments the series might have had.
No monsters, no lore: a single multi layered tragedy that doesn't captivate.
It tries to be a dark and sinister crawl, gives up on that around episode 4 and then bashes your brain pan in with repetitive junk.
You'd best skip this one.

And not in a good way ... which I guess when we're speaking of Hell would be a good thing ... but it isn't really. And it is a shame. Because while again someone prematurely rated and reviewed this "claiming this had potential" (at least partly true - the quoted statement), this really never was as engaging as it might have gotten.
Maybe it is because the formula is known. It does remind of other shows, like Buffy or anything similar you may have experienced already. Now of course that does not mean, the show has no right to exist. Copying something good but putting a twist to it or just making it accessible ... that is all we need. And while this isn't bad, it also never takes off either. Add to that an ending to the show that cries for it to be continued ... but as we know it got canceled ... so even if you liked this way better than I did (and I enjoyed parts of this), the ending will be frustrating to say the least

The accents are laughable, borderline bad, forced and inconsistent. The acting is not so great. This is probably due to the writing. I'm into just the second episode. The special effects are good enough to make you almost gag at times - for example when Annabel eats. I love Annabel's eyes. The way they portray the characters possessed is slightly different.
At this point, however, I am starting to root for Annabel and the demons.
And what is up with the mild mannered, cool and collective, sometimes strong arms, persistent priest? Is he really a Catholic priest, priest or just some guy pretending to be one?

It's fairly rare I anticipate a film or a series that perfectly fails in all areas. You gather together a recognizable producer (Jason Blum), director (Eli Roth) and lead star (Mena Suvari) solely on a WEtv budget and you get something no one cared about creating. The shame in this is that the plot device has a fairly decent idea; A possessed woman that uses her inner demon powers to hunt, destroy/exorcise other demons. Sure it's basically recycled material, but I had assumed the South Carolina backdrop would have added a nice touch.
"CHEAP" is the easiest word for this series. It feels cheap right out of the gate with the poor editing cuts, bland voice-over and unremarkable dialogue. You present a southern dialect and yet there isn't a single success in faking the easiest accent in the US. I've heard Northerners confuse southern pronunciations with one another; South Carolina & a thick Cajun Louisiana are distinct to the common ear, but Mena Suvari refused any attempt at authenticity. Her character sounds like she's from Rhode Island. That's just lazy.
You could hope that the series would be another "so bad it's good" premise. Maybe inject a little humor into this hopeless flush down the genre toilet, but the whole series was dumped out all-at-once on Black Friday. It forced me to consider, "WEtv must have wanted to get rid of this as quickly as possible." ... as no second season is expected.

I was a bit excited to hear of this. It could be a nice addition to all the horror and fantasy I usually watch.
I hate to say that it is dead inside. Bad grime and cheap fun lenses. The special effects are horrible. I read that somebody said that they just need a bigger budget, but I'm afraid that that's not it. You can build more suspense with less budget. What I saw was cheesy and bad choices in grime.
Even if they can look better with more budget, they have to work on the chemistry between the actors. There was none. They were saying lines and not reacting to one and other. The storyline.. was there a storyline? I got the feeling they all just sat around for thing to just happen.
I'm not recommending this show to anyone, unless you like cheesy hallmark series and like to be naughty for once, and not be damaged inside.

South of Hell could be a real winner with an increased production budget. The storyline is interesting and the show could easily become as big a hit as Supernatural. It's a shame WEtv didn't see the possibilities for the 1st season. I will give WEtv credit for stepping out and taking a chance on a non cookie cutter TV show. Maybe, next seasons production budget will allow the director to carry the show to greater heights. With so many shows of the past that went in a different direction only to later become SyFy icons, like "Firefly" but were killed off before the people had a chance to become fans. South of Hell looks to be a pop-icon in the making, we can only hope WEtv can have the foresighted vision and give the SyFy fans the warm up time they always need.

This is a new type of supernatural show that has promise but is lacking in execution regarding the story. This is mostly in part because the story is lacking in depth. This show seems to rely on a "Pivotal" moment of triumph regarding human nature triumph and or the main characters eating of a demon. But we all know in this day and age that we need that little bit of extra spark to cloud the usual bad versus evil and some flashy end to make it all seem worth while. It is hard to drum that up I know but writers need to think outside the box of story lines they grew up with to win a crowd to please the evil cop. Exec's. This show does have potential
.it really does I just hope the writers see it before it gets cancelled.

The whole season was so boring plus the demon thing doesn't suit well. Although you can watch it if you want a timepass series.

Watching the show brought me south to hell for sure ...
I forced myself through episode 1, which was hard enough.
The introduction was without love and very clumsy, not giving room for charakter development. It just felt like the intro of a cheap 90s series. Like a cheap combination of Buffy and Supernatural.
After episode 2 i stopped trying to give the show a chance.
The actors can surely do better, but with scripts like this there is not much room.
In summary: Poorly written show with poor special effects, cheaply produced. The cast that has potential, that's the only reason why i give 3 stars instead of 1.

I'm three episodes into this series. I gave it two stars. One because it is only eight episodes long so the pain will be brief. The other star was for the ability in getting this green lit.
With the exception of Dusty, every character is reading lines, not acting a part. Married couples have no chemistry, siblings have no chemistry, mother-child dyads have no chemistry. The acting isn't about good versus evil, it is about terrible triumphing over the really awful. It is a mixed decision. The only real acting and chemistry between characters is in the scenes with Abigail and Maria.
The settings are fine. Southern US has its visual charm. The trailer park and small town appearance when it is supposedly in a larger city at first seems odd but it captures the reality of southern urban living. Many of these towns are more collections of neighborhoods than unified urban cityscapes.
The story has a lot of moving parts, and in the third episode was continuing to introduce more. At times the way the parts are supposed to interact is difficult to determine. I'm struggling with devoting another four hours to see this through. The characters are not compelling enough, nor sympathetic enough to make me care if or how they resolve their issues.

If you can imagine Mena Suvari fan - thats me. I have watched everything shes done and was really looking forward for "South Of Hell". But its just huge disappointment.
First, this is so not a role for her and I keep wondering why is she keep going for completely wrong ones. Mena, you have your looks thats gonna do things for you, make it happen. This Maria role reminded me even on Buffy Summers, but Mena isn't cute - she beautiful and hence - it wont work! Second - script is just plain bad. It does have some potential, but later it goes in many directions and we have only seven episodes - not much. Third - my God, who are rest of the actors - just terrible, with few exceptions. And that wont include Lydia Hearst, who's incredible hot, but come on, just a little effort. But shes looking even good in comparison to Zachary Booth - the weak spot in this show. Everything he does is just bad to the point of comical - and he even has a role of narrator! Wow, dude, were you bored or just trying to sound cool? Don't do it again, please.
In the end, this feels, looks and IT IS - low budget, rushed project that could be better, but it wont, I cant see it getting into season two. I'm happy for opportunity to watch Mena Suvari, but she needs new manager, agent and new inspiration. She is somewhat talented and she got to offer more than just her good looks, but this is clearly not right choice and it wasn't for few years now. Going for horror after all shes done is so not promising. but thats just me speaking career-wise; in her interviews she always sounds happy about herself, and I guess thats all that matters. As a fan, I feel like she could done a lot better and she still can. Time to play grown-up woman now Mena.

Just started watching it. Great idea. Interesting story. So much can be done with it. It needs to come back to the right network with better but very similar story line . I love the darkness. This didn't get the praise it deserved. Just started watching it. Great idea. Interesting story. So much can be done with it. Not understanding all the hate for this show! It's a fun, cheesey, low budget show with an intriguing story line and great set design and cinematography. It's not nearly as hokey as "true blood" or "supernatural" and each episode is directed very well by some high cred directors (ie Rachel Talalay and Eli Roth). Not everything needs to be on a GOT budget, and this is one of those shows. Low budget popcorn horror series that deserved at least one more season. If you like "Buffy", "Evil", or "True Blood" even at their most camp, this Bud's for YOU! Also, people state Mena Suvari is above this and but sometimes even Oscar nominees want to do a show that's just fun and mindless, and that's ok. Mena does a great job playing two characters, and this show actually has a very original concept. Worth a watch!!!
