Back in 1980, Paul Schrader made American Gigolo, starring the one and only Richard Gere, where he played a male escort named Julian Kay. It was a high-paying job, and that allowed him to live a high-end life. But when things took a turn for the worse, Julian realized that he was as disposable as a piece of paper because nobody wanted to vouch for him. Through the film, Schrader commented on what women want in a man, objectification of men, and the volatile nature of materialism. Several years later, in 2024, we got Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper, where the titular married man used his expertise in pelvic sorcery to attain the kind of lifestyle that he won’t be able to afford on his government salary. Due to one of his client’s associations with the world of crime, Tribhuvan had to traverse through the dark underbelly of Noida. Now, A True Gentleman...

Paul Schrader’s “Oh, Canada,” a drama starring Richard Gere and Jacob Elordi, has sold North American rights to Kino Lorber.
The boutique New York-based distribution company is planning an awards season theatrical release this December, followed by a home video and digital release on major platforms. The exact date has yet to be determined. “Oh, Canada” had its world premiere at Cannes Film Festival and will continue to make the rounds this fall at Toronto and New York film festivals.
“I’ve been tracking Kino Lorber’s films for years, and I’m happy to become part of the family,” Schrader said in a statement.
Schrader directed the film and adapted the screenplay from the 2021 novel “Foregone” by Russell Banks. (Schrader adapted the 1989 Banks novel “Affliction” into the 1997 film of the same name). Gere, reuniting with Schrader for the first time since 1980’s “American Gigolo,” plays a terminally ill...

Veteran director and screenwriter Paul Schrader will be honored at this year’s Lucaa Film Festival with a lifetime achievement award.
The Italian event, which runs Sept. 21-29, will also screen a retrospective of Schrader’s work, including Blue Collar, Hardcore, The Comfort of Strangers, Affliction, Auto Focus, The Walker, The Canyons, The Card Counter, Master Gardener, Mishima, and First Reformed.
On Sept. 26, Schrader will hold a public masterclass at the Cinema Astra, attended by film students from various Italian universities. The following day he will receive the festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
The director began his career as a screenwriter for Martin Scorsese with scripts to such classics as Raging Bull and Taxi Driver before stepping behind the camera for his 1978 directorial debut Blue Collar, a crime drama starring Richard Pryor and Harvey Keitel. The specter of death was all around Paul Schrader as he wrote and filmed “Oh Canada,” starring Richard Gere and Jacob Elordi. The new film, being sold by Arclight Films at the European Film Market, centers around the last days of documentary filmmaker Leonard Fife and is based on the Russell Banks’ novel “Foregone.” Schrader was a longtime pal of Banks since Schrader directed the adaptation of Banks’ acclaimed “Affliction” in 1989. Banks died in January 2023 as Schrader was working on the “Canada” screenplay. “We corresponded up to almost the end,” says Schrader. “My health was bad too.” He contracted Covid-19 and endured subsequent respiratory issues that led to hospitalization.
“We were all dealing with mortality issues as Leonard does in the film. You get to the point where you wonder how many bullets you have left in the gun,” the veteran filmmaker says.

The erotic thriller is back, and you'd have to be a prudish killjoy to lament its return.
The subgenre has its roots in the pre-code movies of the 1920s, and '30s, and films noir of the '40s and '50s, but the formula as it exists today was codified in 1980 with Paul Schrader's "American Gigolo" and, most vitally, Brian De Palma's "Dressed to Kill". And thanks to Karina Longworth's deep dive into best and worst of the subgenre via her indispensable podcast "You Must Remember This," younger viewers who weren't there for the '80s and '90s heyday are now revisiting the stylish highs and Skinemax lows of films in which people occasionally take a break from screwing to commit a string of murders (or investigate said murders with alarming aloofness).
As movies (especially studio productions) got progressively less sexy throughout the 2000s, the...

Jacob Elordi continues to burnish his indie film credentials between seasons of “Euphoria.” This fall season has seen the young actor appear in several buzzy festival hits, including Emerald Fennel’s “Saltburn” and Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla.” And with a slate of projects that includes a meaty role opposite Richard Gere in Paul Schrader’s upcoming drama “Oh Canada,” Elordi does not appear to be slowing down any time soon.
IndieWire caught up with Elordi on the red carpet of the New York Film Festival, where he was on hand to promote his turn as Elvis Presley in “Priscilla.” The role recently catapulted Austin Butler to stardom after his acclaimed performance in Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis,” but Elordi avoided the distraction of watching other actors play the rock legend.

In 1980, Richard Gere had a breakout role in the film American Gigolo, a part that led many to consider him a sex symbol. Since then, the actor has starred in films like Pretty Women and Chicago. While he’s had a fruitful career, he doesn’t like the sex symbol label that stuck with him for decades. After one interview, he even threatened legal action against the program for referring to him as such.
Richard Gere once threatened legal action when a talk show host called him a ‘sex symbol’
In 1989, Gere appeared on the talk show Aspel & Company. While introducing Gere, host Michael Aspel made the mistake of referring to Gere as a sex symbol. Before it aired, Gere’s team reached out, warning them to cut the phrase out of the interview.

Richard Gere’s breakout role in 1980’s “American Gigolo” might have made him a household name, but that didn’t mean the actor wanted to be labeled a “sex symbol,” according to veteran British talk show host Michael Aspel.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Aspel recalled Gere’s appearance on his talk show “Aspel and Company” in 1989.
“When Richard Gere came on the show, I introduced him and at the end I said, and ‘he’s done this, he’s done that,’ and I used the phrase ‘sex symbol,'” Aspel said. “After the interview, we had a phone call from his agent saying if I didn’t remove the sex symbol thing, they were going to take it up with their lawyer.”
Aspel continued, “He would not be known as a sex symbol. It was very odd. But he took himself very seriously because he did a lot of...

Jacob Elordi is trading in his Aussie accent for a Canadian drawl in Paul Schrader’s “Oh, Canada.”
IndieWire can confirm that the star of this year’s “Saltburn” and “Priscilla” has officially joined Schrader’s upcoming film alongside Richard Gere. “Oh, Canada” is an adaptation of late author Russell Banks’ 2021 novel “Foregone.” The novel follows a dying documentary filmmaker who comes to terms with his legacy. Ove the weekend, Schrader shared a photo of the two actors on Facebook during the “rehearsal” for the film. Reps close to the project confirmed Elordi’s casting, though details have yet been shared about the production start or his specific role.
Previously, Schrader described the film to IndieWire as about “Canada being a metaphor for death,” he said. ‘It’s my ‘Ivan Ilyich.’”

Igor Martinovic is an Emmy-nominated cinematographer whose work includes “House of Cards,” “The Night Of,” “What Happened, Miss Simone?” and the Showtime limited series “George & Tammy,” but the best advice he ever got was not from a fellow cinematographer, a teacher or even a director he was working with.
Instead, Martinovic told TheWrap, it came from “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull” screenwriter and “American Gigolo” and “First Reformed” director Paul Schrader, in an interview Schrader gave about what he and director Martin Scorsese were trying to do when they made “Taxi Driver.”

Speaking and embracing his truth! Wayne Brady is getting candid about his sexuality.
The Let’s Make a Deal star recently sat down for an interview with People, and he opened up about identifying as pansexual, and how he defines that for himself.
“In doing my research, both with myself and just with the world, I couldn’t say if I was bisexual, because I had to really see what that was, especially because I really have not gotten a chance to act on anything,” Brady said. “So, I came to pansexual.”
Brady explained, “I know that I’m completely messing up the dictionary meaning — but to me, pan means being able to be attracted to anyone who identifies as gay, straight, bi, transsexual or non-binary. Being able to be attracted across the board.”
“I think, at least for me for right now, that is the proper place,” he added.

How do you solve a problem like Chevy Chase? Throughout his lengthy career, the actor has had a long, troubled history of acting like a jerk to nearly everyone he's worked with, from the infamous backstage fight he had with Bill Murray upon leaving Saturday Night Live to his much-publicized feud with showrunner Dan Harmon while co-starring on the beloved NBC sitcom "Community." By many accounts, the star is, at best, annoying to work with, and, at worst, an insufferable jerk.
That behavior would seem to be the end-all, be-all explanation for why Chase's film career eventually floundered despite having a pretty strong start. Yet, like most things, that isn't the whole story: for one, Chase is an incredibly talented actor and comedian, despite his personal shortcomings. For another, his persona being what it is — this is the man who made a splash announcing himself on SNL as "I'm Chevy Chase,...

With its list of new releases for August 2023, Prime Video is relying on a heaping dose of fun library movies.
The first of the month brings a big influx of worthwhile flicks, including Galaxy Quest, Saw, F9: The Fast Saga, and Jurassic Park (the last two via Amazon’s Freevee free streaming option). Then some other recents hits arrive later on like the appropriately titled Cocaine Bear on Aug. 15 and the Chris Pine-starring Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves on Aug. 25.
August also sees the arrival of a major Amazon Original movie in the form of Red, White & Royal Blue. Based on a New York Times bestselling book, this LGBTQ romance follows a U.S. president’s son and a British prince. Over on the TV side of things, Prime Video subscribers can check out the Sigourney Weaver project The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart on Aug. 4 and Harlan Coben’s Shelter on Aug.

It’s been quite a year for Prime Video already. The service is seeing huge success with its second season of “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” and its international espionage thriller “Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan” turned in its fourth and final season earlier this summer.
Unfortunately for Tolkien fans, there’s no new season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” to dive into this August, but there are some fantastic titles coming to Prime Video all throughout the month. From Prime Video originals to hot new movies, here are the top five titles The Streamable is most excited about on the service in August 2023.

Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans is the director's semi-autobiographical coming-of-age drama based on his boyhood dreams of becoming a filmmaker, and the cast of The Fabelmans is full of A-list stars. Like many of Spielberg’s greatest projects, The Fabelmans is a highly entertaining adventure that uses the romanticism of youth to paint a nostalgic picture of family and independence — with several more mature tones hidden beneath the surface story. It features an outstanding cast of both veteran actors and breakthrough stars, who bring this layered narrative to life with their complex performances, forging this personal story that Spielberg had always wanted to create.
The Fabelmans is among Spielberg's best movies, rivaling even the most iconic and acclaimed projects in his filmography. It was met with widespread critical acclaim, receiving a total of seven nominations at the Academy Awards — including Best Picture, Best Director, and multiple acting categories. It’s...

We won’t get to see Mandy Patinkin’s adorable real-life marriage become a TV show after all.
Showtime has scrapped four series that were in the works, according to The Hollywood Reporter, led by Seasoned, a comedy based on Patinkin and his wife Kathryn Grody’s 43-year marital bond. The comedy, which was first announced last year and earned a six-episode series order at the network, was to star Patinkin and Grody and follow “the delightfully tumultuous relationship and life of a successful, gregarious, deeply committed, slightly insane married couple.”

Update: Three months after the Gattaca reboot TV series was first announced comes the news that the project has been scrapped by Showtime. In addition to the Gattaca series, Showtime also axed Seasoned, a comedy inspired by the lives of real-life married couple Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody, as well as Sweetness and Split, two projects that had been in development. Gattaca will have the opportunity to be shopped elsewhere, so it’s possible we may still see the reboot series.

Gattaca remains one of my favourite movies, but that doesn’t make it immune from receiving the reboot treatment. It’s been reported that Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa, best known for Homeland, are developing a TV series adaptation of the 1997 sci-fi movie for Showtime with Craig Borton (Dallas Buyers Club).

Chris McCarthy continues to slim down Showtime’s content pipeline.
The premium cable network has passed on four projects: the reboot of Gattaca that would have brought Homeland duo Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa back to the Paramount Global outlet as well as Seasoned, the comedy inspired by the lives of married couple Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody that had previously had a series order. Also getting the pass are two projects that had been in development — Split and Sweetness.
Sony Pictures Television, which produces Gattaca and Sweetness, plans to shop both projects.
Showtime declined to comment.
The passes come after Chris McCarthy added oversight of Showtime to his purview last year, giving him control of nearly all of Paramount Global’s linear networks including MTV, Comedy Central and Paramount Network, among others. This week, Showtime programming was folded into Paramount+ in a bid to provide the streamer with the...

According to his fellow costar Rosie O’Donnell, American Gigolo lead Jon Bernthal was more than pleased that Showtime’s neo-noir crime drama was a one-and-done series.
“Jon Bernthal was not happy with the show, and it was very clear,” the actress and former daytime talk show host told The Hollywood Reporter in a recent interview. “It’s difficult to work that way on a set. He was never happy that he was playing a gigolo. And I’m like, ‘Well, it’s called American Gigolo.'”

Here's some news we don't love for you.
Showtime has swung the axe on Vanessa Bayer's I Love That For You.
The comedy has been canceled after just one season on the premium cabler.
"I Love That for You has completed its run on Showtime," the network said.
"We want to thank Vanessa, Jeremy and Jessi, along with the incredible cast and crew for their hard work and wish them the best going forward."
Inspired by Bayer's own story of overcoming childhood leukemia, the comedy centered on Joanna Gold (Bayer), who dreamed of becoming a host at a home-shopping channel.
Molly Shannon starred as Jackie, the charismatic star of the network and Joanna's idol.
Jenifer Lewis played Patricia, the network's icy, enigmatic founder and CEO.
Additional series regulars included Paul James, Ayden Mayeri, Matt Rogers, and Punam Patel.

“I Love That for You” will not move forward with a second season at Showtime. The network has canceled the comedy series executive produced by Vanessa Bayer, Jeremy Beiler and Jessi Klein after one season.
“’I Love That for You’ has completed its run on Showtime,” a spokesperson for the network disclosed on Wednesday evening. “We want to thank Vanessa, Jeremy and Jessi, along with the incredible cast and crew for their hard work and wish them the best going forward.”

Showtime has made a decision on its last remaining current scripted series whose fate had been up in the air, opting not to pick up a second season of comedy I Love That for You. The news comes a year after the Season 1 run of the show starring Vanessa Bayer, who co-created it with Jeremy Beiler. The two serve as executive producers alongside showrunner Jessi Klein and Michael Showalter.
“I Love That for You has completed its run on Showtime,” a spokesperson for the network said in a statement. “We want to thank Vanessa, Jeremy and Jessi, along with the incredible cast and crew for their hard work and wish them the best going forward.”
As Deadline reported, there had been an internal effort to get the well-received series renewed. I Love That for You co-star Matt Rogers claimed in December that a second season of the show already had been written.

Another Showtime scripted original series has been shown the door.
The Paramount Global-backed premium cable network has canceled I Love That For You, the comedy inspired by star and co-creator Vanessa Bayer’s experience with childhood leukemia. With “Master Gardner,” writer-director Paul Schrader completes what has been dubbed his “Lonely Man” trilogy — but the man behind “American Gigolo” and “The Mosquito Coast” has returned to the same preoccupations and themes over his long career. The only thing that’s really changed is his approach to filmmaking.
“The last three films I’ve made in about 20 days each,” Schrader told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “I’m shooting more quote-unquote film — even though we don’t shoot film — I’m shooting more images and getting more images in the chip to, like we say, in the 20 days than I did in 40.”
Part of that leanness is attributed to Schrader’s understanding of what is and isn’t needed, even before arriving on set. His scripts are now a tight 70-80 pages, while in the early ’80s they tended to hover around 115. “When you’re working on a tight budget,...

We’re three weeks into the summer movie season, and it’s looking much like previous months where only one or two movies are doing well, while all else flounders. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
This week’s high-profile release is “Fast X,” the 10th installment of the Universal franchise that began in 2001 with “The Fast and the Furious,” a surprise hit at the time, making stars of Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. Both of them returned in 2009 for the fourth movie “Fast & Furious,” directed by Justin Lin, who stuck around for three movies including 2021’s “F9.”
Lin left “Fast X” as director, to be replaced by Louis Letterier but Lin’s screenplay was used for what will be the first part of the finale for the entire franchise. Originally, it was meant to be a two-part finale, but Diesel recently stated it would actually be a three-parter,...

Paul Schrader will not keep mum.
On Monday night, the filmmaker spoke at Santa Monica’s Aero Theatre between screenings of “First Reformed” (2017) and “The Card Counter” (2021). He’s been making the promo rounds of late, whether sharing his new digs on Facebook or being interviewed by New York Magazine or, most recently, The New Yorker.
His distributors often ask him to refrain from Facebook posting ahead of the release of his new film — in this case “Master Gardener”, starring the romantic triangle of Joel Edgerton, Sigourney Weaver, and Quintessa Swindell, which played well at Venice. It’s the concluding film in Schrader’s lonely-man-in-a-room trilogy, including “First Reformed” and “The Card Counter.” And yet the indefatigable Schrader is still posting, weighing in on A.I., among other things, and during the conversation, he also spoke about the tricky movie he’s written and now hopes Elisabeth Moss will star in and direct.

Since May 2, members of the Writers Guild of America have been on strike in demand of higher minimum wages, overhauled residuals, and various other issues brought up during negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. One particularly contentious issue is the use of artificial intelligence in screenwriting, which WGA leadership has requested be regulated in order to protect writers’ working standards such as compensation, credits, and residuals.
Now, filmmaker and elite Facebook poster Paul Schrader is weighing in on the issue. In a post published Thursday, Schrader called the WGA’s position on AI “a fascinating conundrum,” saying he believes it is inevitable that the technology will become a major tool in screenwriting.
“The Guild doesn’t fear AI as much as it fears not getting paid. Burrow into that logic. It’s apparent that AI will become a force in film entertainment” Schrader wrote. “Do you...

Bret Easton Ellis’ latest novel “The Shards” goes where only Bret Easton Ellis could possibly go: back to 1981 Los Angeles with a 600-page book, largely unedited, that’s mostly about himself.
That’s partly because the main character is named Bret, a nihilistic, 17-year-old, bisexual San Fernando Valley trust-fund prep-school brat who’s writing a book called “Less Than Zero.” Yes, this is literary-horror autofiction from the author of that aforementioned 1985 debut and shocking postmodern novels like “American Psycho.”
“The Shards” is also a more-or-less direct transcript of the Patreon serial Ellis launched in late 2020, and its unwieldiness means it’s well-matched for a long-form, flashy series adaptation at HBO. As IndieWire has confirmed, “The Shards” is now being set up at the premium cabler with Ellis as the sole writer while executive producing with Nick Hall (Emmy-winning executive producer on “The White Lotus”) and Brian Young (an executive producer...

Exclusive: Daredevil: Born Again actress Sandrine Holt has joined David Cronenberg’s next movie, The Shrouds opposite Guy Pearce, Vincent Cassel and Diane Kruger.
The project, which Deadline first reported, starts production on May 8 in Toronto and stars Cassel as Karsh, an innovative businessman and grieving widower, who builds a novel device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud. This burial tool installed at his own state-of-the-art – though controversial cemetery allows him and his clients to watch their specific departed loved one decompose in real time. Karsh’s revolutionary business is on the verge of breaking into the international mainstream when several graves within his cemetery are vandalized and nearly destroyed, including that of his wife. One of the most high-profile releases in the spring of 1983 was “Flashdance,” starring Jennifer Beals, directed by Adrian Lyne, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson. It marked Beals’ feature film debut, as well as Lyne’s second major feature following 1980’s “Foxes.” It was also one of Bruckheimer’s and Simpson’s earliest projects, coming soon after “American Gigolo.” Released 40 years ago on April 15, 1983, “Flashdance” took second place at the box office its opening weekend with four million dollars, but then it became the sensation of the spring movies, jumping up to first place the next weekend and staying there well into early May. By the end of its run, “Flashdance,” about a woman who works as both a welder and an exotic dancer and wants to get into ballet school, made more than $90 million in the United States and more than $200 million worldwide. Ziwe Fumudoh’s list of iconic guests has run short. The comedian’s Showtime talk show “Ziwe” has been canceled at the premium cable network after two seasons, IndieWire has confirmed.
In addition, the channel has given a six-episode season order to “Seasoned,” a new comedy show starring real-life married couple Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody; co-created and co-written by their son Gideon Grody-Patinkin and Ewen Wright, the show is directly inspired by the pair’s real-life relationship. The channel also passed on the pilot for “The Wood,” a comedy series based on the 1999 film from Rick Famuyiwa. Finally, Showtime acquired “Heist 88,” a crime thriller film starring Courtney B. The Chris McCarthy era at Showtime has claimed another victim.
The premium cable network, which was added to the Paramount Global exec’s purview last year, has canceled late night talk show Ziwe after two seasons. Additionally, Showtime has made decisions on two of its three comedy pilots, handing out a series order to Mandy Patinkin family comedy Seasoned while passing on The Wood. What’s more, the original movie Heist 88 starring Courtney B. Vance, has moved from Paramount+ to Showtime.
The changes come as McCarthy has identified three different programming groups for his vision of Showtime, which is being rebranded as Paramount+ With Showtime in a bid to better align the streamer and linear network: franchises, diverse cultures and antiheroes.
As part of McCarthy’s Showtime review, the exec who also oversees linear networks Paramount, MTV, Comedy Central and more has integrated the cabler’s exec team with...

April on Prime Video is stacked with returning favorites, the launch of one of Amazon’s biggest shows ever and a bevy of great movies to watch. The fifth and final season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” launches on April 14, while Amazon will premiere the globe-trotting action-thriller series “Citadel” – starring Priyanka Chopra-Jonas and Richard Madden – on April 28. The show hails from “Avengers: Endgame” filmmaker Joe and Anthony Russo.
Noteworthy movies arriving on April 1 include the “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” movies, “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” “The Big Lebowski,” “Looper,” “Vanilla Sky” and “Top Gun.”
You can also stream the Billy Eichner rom-com “Bros” starting April 4 and the George Clooney/Julia Roberts rom-com “Ticket to Paradise” on April 11.

As befitting its status as one of the world’s biggest companies, every now and then Amazon likes to take a big swing with its Prime Video originals. With its list of new releases for April 2023, the streamer is taking one of its biggest swings yet.
Though it’s not quite as vast or expensive as fellow Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Citadel (premiering April 28) is a massive, massive undertaking. Starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, this spy series is described as “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series.” This means that the Russo Brothers-produced project will eventually feature several spinoffs in multiple countries and languages around the world. Neat-o!

Pete Davidson’s ever-evolving love life has been the focus of much media scrutiny — something that the “Saturday Night Live” alum admits he finds “confusing.”
In advance of the debut of his new Peacock comedy series “Bupkis”, Davidson, 29, sat down with “American Gigolo” star Jon Bernthal for the latter’s “Real Ones With Jon Berthnal” podcast.
According to the 29-year-old comedian — who’s been engaged to Ariana Grande and in recent years has dated such famous women as Kim Kardashian, Phoebe Dynevor, Emily Ratajkowski, Kate Beckinsale and more — doesn’t think it’s that unusual that he’s been with that many people.

“I’m in my 20s and I’ve dated people. And for some reason, that’s very crazy and interesting to people,” Davidson told Bernthal, as reported by Us Weekly.

Exclusive: The ongoing changes at Showtime have reached the network’s development slate which has been cut down significantly, with a slew of projects getting a pass, I hear.
There had been a programming slate reevaluation since Chris McCarthy added Showtime to his purview following the exit of longtime CEO David Nevins in October. The process accelerated last month when, following the January announcement that the premium cable network will be integrated into Paramount+ on digital and renamed as Paramount+ with Showtime on linear, it was revealed that Showtime will merge with MTV Entertainment Studios.
McCarthy at the time set new programming leadership for the network, with Nina L. Diaz expanding her role as Chief Creative Officer and President of Content of the combined operation, and Keith Cox named President of Scripted, reporting to her alongside incumbent Showtime EVP Scripted Amy Israel.
