Eva Longoria and Cris Abrego have known each other for 20 years. As two of entertainment’s most prominent Latino figures, they have developed a strong friendship around shared experiences and a similar passion for nurturing creative talent.
At long last, actor-director-producer Longoria and Abrego, the veteran unscripted producer and executive, have joined forces to launch Hyphenate Media Group, a company that will be part production company, part talent scouting agency and part business incubator. Banijay, where Abrego serves as chairman of the Americas, has made a strategic investment in the company. Abrego will remain in his executive role with the French production giant even as he devotes his time to building Hyphenate.
“With Hyphenate Media Group, Eva and I are building an engine for culture-defining content by investing in visionary multi-hyphenate artists and providing these extraordinary creative leaders with the resources and infrastructure they need to scale their businesses,” Abrego said.

In 2012, Eva Longoria wrapped up the eighth and final season of Desperate Housewives, and she had a decision to make about her future. “That last year of Housewives,” she says, “I remember getting every single show offered to me to star in … to star in … to star in …”
Amid the throes of the streaming era, it’s easy to forget the omnipresence of a network breakout like Housewives. In its first season in 2004, Housewives was pulling in more viewers on Sunday nights than the average Sunday Night Football game does in 2023. The show — along with early-aughts entries Grey’s Anatomy and Lost — helped catapult network ABC back to primetime dominance. Bob Iger, who was named CEO of ABC parent company Disney in the year after Housewives’ debut, “would take us to dinner, individually,” remembers Longoria. Three winners were announced on Sunday evening for the ninth edition of Locarno’s First Look, the festival’s initiative to showcase films in post-production: Milica Tomović’s “Celts,” Filip Martinović’s “Telenovela Greyscale in Color” and Marta Popivoda’s “Resisting Landscapes.”
First Look offers a potential springboard onto the international market, having previously hosted breakout projects such as Alejandro Fernandez Almendras’ “To Kill A Man,” an eventual Sundance World Cinema grand jury winner; Mantas Kvedaravicius “Parthenon,” premiering at Venice’s Critics’ Week this year; and Vicente Alves do Ó’s “Sunburn,” later picked up by international sales, distribution and production company The Open Reel.

Simon Kinberg’s Dark Phoenix might as well be retitled Contractual Obligations: The Movie. For a comic book adaptation of this thematic magnitude, speaking for female representation en masse, it’s devastatingly inconsequential. Chris Claremont and John Byrne’s “The Dark Phoenix Saga” continues to be referenced as one of the Marvel Comics Universe’s most iconic storylines, but Kinberg’s cinematic reissue fails to attain equal reverence. As exhaustively procedural a franchise shakeup you’d never ask for, (possibly) ending Fox’s X-Men canon with one last hurrah that got creatively scooped by Captain Marvel. This is a phoned-in finale; nothing more but potentially even less.
Marvel’s “Dark Phoenix” arc sees Jean Gray (Sophie Turner) become the ultimate evolution of her psychic and telepathic powers after colliding with chart-spiking solar flares. Jean feels descriptively “great,” but Beast (Nicholas Hoult) and Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) worry when their friend cannot restrain her amplified abilities.

The series, which received a 16-episode order and was co-created by Lopez and Kurland, stars newcomer Paulina Chavez as Ashley Garcia. Per the network, when Garcia — the world’s only 15-and-a-half-year-old robotics engineer and rocket scientist — gets the chance to work for Nasa, she moves across the country to live with her Uncle Victor, a pro football player turned high school coach who’s never met a responsibility he can’t shirk.

After saving the world on screens big (Shazam!) and small (Chuck…!), Zachary Levi is teaming up with MTV to help pay tribute to them both. Levi will serve as host of the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards, airing Monday, June 17 at 9/8c, TVLine has learned.
Formerly known as just the MTV Movie Awards — which ran as such from 1992 to 2016 — the revamped version of the ceremony now includes awards for TV shows and small-screen stars. Tiffany Haddish hosted the award show’s inaugural outing in 2017, while Adam DeVine snagged the coveted gig in 2018.
It’s the kind of show where you never know what to expect.
