Dead Man's Party: The Making of Halloween 5 (2013)
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
Extremely entertaining documentary that can be found on the bonus disc to Anchor Bay and Shout Factory's 15-disc HALLOWEEN box set. This documentay here features Danielle Harris, composer Alan Howarth , Ellie Cornell, Don Shanks, Wendy Kaplan, Jonathan Chapin, Matthew Walker, Jeffrey Landman, Tamara Glynn and other cast members as they discuss the making of the picture.
I think the one common ground throughout all the stories is that this was a troubled production that started without a complete screenplay and the story kept changing throughout the filming. HALLOWEEN 5 has never been one of my favorites and the most frustrating thing about it is that elements of part four are never mentioned here and things are introduced here that just leave you wondering why. It's clear from the interviews that the director was rather essentric and was just trying to add all sorts of new things and very few of them worked. There's a pretty good discussion of The Man in Black and it appears no one knows exactly what the point was.
The entire cast are wonderfully charming in their stories. There's some talk about the various partying that was going on behind-the-scenes and we get some footage of this. The best being clips of Harris in the Michael Myers mask playing around. Fans of the series will certainly enjoy this documentary much more than the previous featurette on the original Anchor Bay disc. Clocking in at 44-minutes, this one here has a lot more detail and also discusses the disappointment the film had at the box office.
