Villains really are the new superheroes.
DC Studios has tapped screenwriter Matthew Orton (“Captain America: Brave New World”) to write a feature film that will involve Batman villains Bane and Deathstroke, Variety has confirmed. The project is still in its infancy: There are no stars or director attached, and DC Studios chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran have been clear that they will not greenlight a project until they are satisfied with a complete screenplay.
The movie follows a growing trend in the superhero space of projects focusing as much on the villains as on the heroes, from the ongoing HBO series “The Penguin” and Disney+ series “Agatha All Along” to Warner Bros. upcoming sequel “Joker: Folie à Deux” and Sony’s upcoming Marvel adaptations “Venom: The Last Dance” and “Kraven the Hunter.”

James Gunn's new cinematic DC Universe doesn't even officially kick off until this December with "Creature Commandos." Yet, a new film has already been added to the slate. The Hollywood Reporter claims that DC Studios is moving forward with a film starring A-List DC villains Bane and Deathstroke/Slade Wilson. The script is being penned by Matthew Orton, one of the credited writers on "Captain America: Brave New World."
Many of DC Comics' most popular characters are Batman villains, so they've been elevated from heels to stars: think of Joker, Penguin, and Harley Quinn, all of whom have all received their own character-focused shows and/or movies. This untitled Bane & Deathstroke project is the latest in this line.
Bane, real name unknown (and created by Chuck Dixon and Graham Nolan), is one of Batman's deadliest villains. Raised in a South American prison, he volunteered for a chemical testing regimen...

“Captain America: Brave New World” writer Matthew Orton has been tapped to write a Bane and Deathstroke movie for DC Studios, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
No director is currently attached to the forthcoming film.
Deathstroke
Deathstroke was created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez. He is a mercenary and assassin who first appeared in the “New Teen Titans” #2 back in 1980. Wizard magazine rated him the 24th greatest villain of all time.
In 2009, Deathstroke was ranked as IGN’s 32nd greatest comic book villain of all time. Deathstroke, also known as Deathstroke the Terminator or simply Slade, is known to be the greatest assassin in all of DC Comics.
Deathstroke was meant to be a one-off villain for the Teen Titans, his story being that he took over a contract to kill the team after his son succumbed to his own superhuman enhancements. Instead, he was...

With a big-budget Joker movie just weeks away and a Penguin HBO series freshly unveiled, a few other DC villains are being targeted for the spotlight.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Bane, the super-steroid injecting antagonist who was previously seen in the 2012 Christopher Nolan movie The Dark Knight Rises, and Deathstroke, another popular archnemesis in the comic book company’s fold, are being lassoed together for a movie. The James Gunn and Peter Safran-led DC Studios is developing a script from Matthew Orton, a scribe on the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World movie.
There is no director on the project.
Bane is a relatively recent addition to Batman’s rogues gallery, with writer Chuck Dixon and artist Graham Nolan creating him in the early 1990s. The character was born and raised in a prison on a fictional Caribbean isle, a locale that allowed him to not only...

As Taylor Swift once said, “August slipped away like a moment in time,” and August 2023 has been no different. Summer starts to come to a close at the end of August as kids head back to school, Labor Day looms and folks soak up those last few days before the official start of fall on Sept. 21. Netflix will say goodbye to some important titles at the end of this month as well.
The majority of films leaving Netflix will leave on the last day, so there is still time to squeeze some in before the month fully ends. Those leaving the streamer Aug. 31 include “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “Mean Girls,” the “Open Season” films, “Paranormal Activity,” “The Ring” and “Sleepless in Seattle” among others.
While plenty of new films and television shows have arrived on Netflix in August like “Heartstopper” Season 2 and some of the “Despicable Me” films as...

Is it beginning to feel a little like 2020 to anyone else? As the major Hollywood studios continue to refuse even entertaining the completely reasonable requests from the striking actors' and writers' guilds, they've already started pushing back films that were previously set to arrive in the next couple of months, with more delays potentially on the way. Meanwhile, Netflix is doing better than ever -- although, in this case, it's thanks to their deeply unpopular but undeniably successful crackdown on password sharing and not because everyone is stuck at home with nothing else to do but finally stream those films and TV series they've been meaning to catch up on.
Speaking of which (how's that for a segue?), if you've been planning to watch any of the films or shows leaving Netflix in August 2023, now's the time to get cracking. There's nothing departing this month too likely to vanish completely into the streaming void.

Few filmmakers stoke the kind of loyalty and obsessive deconstruction as Christopher Nolan does.
Over 12 films and 25 years, he has made head-spinning, intricately constructed journeys into the mind, time, magic and Gotham City. And audiences have been more than happy to go along for the ride. He is one of the few filmmakers working today who can also get hugely expensive, original movies made.
And this week he’s back with his latest film, “Oppenheimer,” a historical epic about J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), the man who oversaw the construction of the first nuclear weapon in the waning days of World War II. Full of gorgeous, IMAX-captured imagery and structural ingeniousness, it feels in many ways like the ultimate Nolan movie. That is, of course, until the next Nolan movie.

Listicle While Christopher Nolan’s politics in his films raises some pressing questions, it is hard to deny his ability to tell engaging stories. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer will be releasing in theatres on June 21, and the massive hype around the film is only matched by fans eagerly waiting for Barbie. Nolan has over the years built up a reputation as a ‘cerebral’ director, though he does have a fair share of detractors (Did anyone really understand Tenant?). His successful reboot of Batman on the silver screen won him a dedicated fan base among superhero comic book enthusiasts. Nolan is also known for bringing back the same set of actors, disliking VFX and writing non-linear plots that sometimes leave viewers quite puzzled. While the British-American director’s politics in his films raises some pressing questions, it is hard to deny his ability to tell an engaging story and deliver characters...

Luther’s back. Being banged up at the end of Series 5 didn’t stop that growly genius from taking on a new case and a new villain in Bond-inspired Netflix movie The Fallen Sun. No one expected it to be Bane. In retrospect that is a bit odd since, generally speaking, when most comic book nerds think of the villains who pose the greatest threat to Batman, Bane always rounds out the top five or 10 by virtue of being the one baddie to “Break the Bat.” Yet after Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight thrillingly ended on the noble rush of Bruce Wayne riding into the night, accepting he was not the hero Gotham needed, no fan (nor apparently many Warners executives) anticipated the villain of Nolan’s inevitable sequel to be Bane, the beefy steroid-juicer with an affinity for Lucha libre masks.
Anecdotally, I recall that in the early days of social media, there was a lot of chatter among comic book fans that the villain should be evil psychologist Hugo Strange, who could’ve picked up where The Dark Knight left off,...

Matt Reeves’ The Batman kicked off a new era of Dark Knight tales earlier this year, one in which a broody Robert Pattinson punishes criminals night after night while completely shedding the billionaire playboy persona that has long defined Bruce Wayne in pop culture. It’s definitely a different take than general audiences are used to seeing in theaters. But this year’s film marks the beginning of just the latest era of Batman movies for Warner Bros.
Before The Batman, there was Zack Snyder’s Dceu take on the Caped Crusader. Natalie Holt has been set as the composer for Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi, becoming the first woman to score a live-action Star Wars project. She broke the news in an interview with Vanity Fair published on Friday, also confirming reports that longtime Star Wars composer John Williams will provide the show’s main title theme, in his first live-action Star Wars TV outing.
Holt teased that Williams’ past work on the franchise will serve as “tentpoles” for her own—and that she will look to bring her own “new and fresh” interpretation of Star Wars music to the series, via elements she can’t yet reveal. “It’s been glorious, working with my hero,” she said with reference to Williams, “and also bringing my own voice to the show.”
Holt also shared that Williams’ as-yet-unheard theme is “reflective” and “just entirely appropriate” for the series.

This article contains spoilers for Batman #118.
There’s no bigger single title in the DC Comics library right now than the core Batman book. Consistently the book where the future of the Dark Knight is made each month, it’s also been the DC title with perhaps the longest unbroken run of the highest-possible-octane creative teams in superhero comics over the last 15 years. Since 2006, Batman has been written by Grant Morrison, Scott Snyder, Tom King, and James Tynion IV, each bringing their own flavor to the book over extended, sprawling runs.
The latest writer to hit the bat-jackpot is Joshua Williamson, who has had a string of creative successes of his own over the last few years, but who is perhaps best known for an unbroken five year run on The Flash, where he renewed and restored countless elements of not just Barry Allen’s history, but the entire Flash legacy.

Anticipation for Marvel’s Loki has been sky high ever since the show was first announced. WandaVision broke hearts and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier broke boundaries, but Loki has promised to break our brains with a sprawling, time travel-heavy plot that might have massive consequences for the MCU multiverse in upcoming entries like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Make no mistake, there’s a ton of complex stuff going down in the first episode of Loki, but as Owen Wilson’s Mobius M. Mobius cheerily tells the baffled God of Mischief as the first episode unfolds: “you’ll catch up.”

Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight is arguably the best Batman movie ever made, so it’s good news that it’s back on Netflix this month, along with Batman Begins, the film that kicked off this critically-acclaimed trilogy. And once you’ve reached the credits of Nolan’s second outing with the Caped Crusader, you’ll undoubtedly want to jump to the trilogy-closer, The Dark Knight Rises, which puts Batman back in the crosshairs of Ra’s al Ghul’s League of Shadows, this time led by the seemingly invincible Bane (played with relish by Tom Hardy).
The good news is that, despite what some might say, The Dark Knight Rises is absolutely worth a watch, even if it doesn’t quite reach the heights of its predecessor. Just as The Dark Knight took its story from the pages of Batman: Year One and The Long Halloween, Rises...

A movie follow-up has been ordered as opposed to a full-fledged second season, but fear not:
Wu Assassins Season 2 could materialize at Netflix, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
It's also possible that the franchise could continue with additional movies. There are many unanswered questions at this moment in time, but it's nice to know the story will continue in some form.
Now, with such a long time between the first season and this movie being ordered, there will be some casting changes.
The returning cast includes Iko Uwais as Kai Jin, Lewis Tan as Lu Xin Lee, Lawrence Kao as Tommy Wah, and JuJu Chan Szeto as Zan Hui.

Joshua Williamson has had his hands in just about every big DC story for the last five years. One of the longest-tenured Flash writers ever, Williamson has by necessity been in the middle of every time the DC multiverse tried to burst back into canon over the last five years. After all, you can’t have a Crisis without a Flash beat or three.
But now, Williamson is getting the keys to the bus. Infinite Frontier #0 kicks off the post-Metal, post-Future State new status quo for the DC Universe in March. That status quo builds off of DC’s new multiversal mantra: everything happened and anything is possible. We had a chance to talk with him about what that means on both ends – what the new Dcu is growing out of, and what’s coming in the future.
This interview has been lightly edited for clarity.

ABC has given a pilot order to the drama “National Parks,” co-written and executive produced by “Yellowstone” star Kevin Costner.
The drama, which received a put pilot commitment from the network back in 2019, centers on a “small group of elite Nps agents” who solve crimes committed in national parks.
Costner co-wrote the pilot with showrunner Aaron Helbing and Jon Baird. All three will executive produce alongside Rod Lake, Ivan Cohen, Ken Halsband of Costner’s Territory Pictures Entertainment; Barry Jossen and Tana Jamieson of A+E Studios; and director Anthony Hemingway via his Anthony Hemingway Productions banner. The project hails from 20th Television and A+E Studios.

ABC has handed a pilot order to National Parks, a drama written by Yellowstone star Kevin Costner, The Flash’s Aaron Helbing and author Jon Baird.
The one-hour drama comes from Costner’s Territory Pictures Entertainment, along with 20th Television and A+E Studios.
It marks the latest drama pilot order from the Disney-owned network for one of last year’s projects that was rolled into second-cycle development following a similar move for medical drama Triage. Last week, the network also handed out pilot orders for Queens, a drama about a ’90s hip hop group from Zahir McGhee, and Epic, from the team behind Once Upon A Time.
National Parks, formerly known as Isb, follows a small group of elite national parks service agents as they solve crimes while protecting the parks — which, while being known for their sweeping, beautiful landscapes, also attract a vast array of criminal activity.

Despite Bruce Wayne’s enduring 80-year run as the Batman, he isn’t the only character who has donned the cape and cowl. Jean-Paul Valley most famously took over as Batman in 1993’s “Knightfall,” while Dick Grayson succeeded his mentor during Grant Morrison’s time writing the character in the 2000s. Young Terry McGinnis was recruited by a retired Bruce in the Batman Beyond animated series. And Damian Wayne, Tim Drake, and Jim Gordon have also had turns as the Dark Knight.

DC really do know their audience. Every time I think I’ve had enough of these Dark Multiverse books, they stick out one that makes me act like someone propping up the bar at the local. ‘Go on, then, just one more’ When you’ve read as much of DC’s output as me down the years, from the late 70’s onwards remember, then you are a sucker for nostalgia or revisiting stories and times that you connect with. DC have cleverly tapped into that with Dark Multiverse takes on things like Knightfall, Death of Superman, The Judas Contract, Blackest Night, Infinite Crisis among others. I can’t tell you how excited I am for the upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths one. Fanboy explosion time. So, this time round we have Flashpoint, another major DC event.

Amazon’s purportedly billion-dollar-budgeted Lord of the Rings TV series will take place Long before the events of Peter Jackson’s movies. Setting the tone for this small screen return to the world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, the first two episodes will be directed by J.A. Bayona, who helmed Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
The Lord of the Rings TV series is set during Middle Earth’s Second Age—that’s thousands of years before Bilbo Baggins, Gollum or Aragorn ever existed! Moreover, the end of said age was a full millennium before the Wizards even arrived in Middle Earth, which makes the series a prequel in an epochal sense.

The project is one of two short-run shows in development at the cable network; the second is The Donner Party, from Ric Burns (New York: A Documentary Film). History is leaning into its roots in the scripted miniseries field as it moves away from ongoing scripted shows. The second half of Vikings’ sixth and final season is the only scripted series on the network’s docket at the moment, following the cancellations of Project Blue Book and Knightfall in May.

History Plots Alcatraz & Roman Empire Mini-Series As Cable Net Leans Into Limited Dramas – Edinburgh
As Project Blue Book, Knightfall and Vikings all come to an end, History is looking to recalibrate its scripted strategy towards limited dramas and mini-series.
Rob Sharenow, President of Programming at A+E Networks, called returnable scripted series a “fraught path” for the company given the competitive nature of the marketplace.
Speaking on a panel session, moderated by Deadline, at the virtual Edinburgh International TV Festival, Sharenow highlighted the performance of previous minis including Hatfields & McCoys, Roots, Houdini and The Bible. “We’re definitely leaning into limited series and miniseries. That’s traditionally been what’s done best for our audience,” he said.
“The ongoing scripted series market, we’ve done well there too but it’s a more fraught path for us. It’s a very competitive landscape with a lot of dollars being spent. Most of the minis that we gravitate to are pre-sold brands or subjects and in such a congested marketplace,...
