Brooks and Spencer Grammer (Rick and Morty) will lead the voice cast of Enormous, which is inspired by Stephen Kramer Glickman’s personal journey battling depression with the help of his dog’s love. Airing next summer, the film follows Stephen, a man devastated after a breakup with his girlfriend, as he sinks into depression with only his pug, Jelly Donut, to keep him company in his empty house. Nearly a decade after their Comedy Central sketch comedy show Key & Peele ended, Key admitted that he and his former onscreen partner “don’t see each other that often anymore” amid their busy lives on opposite coasts.

“Which is, to me, a tragedy,” he told People, noting that “your lives start to evolve and move in different directions.”

VFX and animation company Cinesite has taken a majority stake in Andy Serkis’s performance capture and virtual production outfit The Imaginarium Studios, Variety can confirm.

Formed in 2012 by the “Lord of the Rings” star, the studio boasts a “revolutionary” approach to mo-cap that includes industry-wide innovation and has seen it collaborate on projects including “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” “Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3” and Netflix’s “Dance Monsters,” among other projects. The studio boasts facilities at both Pinewood in the U.K. and Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Ga.

Under the terms of the deal, The Imaginarium Studios will become a Cinesite partner company, retaining its culture, brand and facilities. CEO Matthew Brown will continue to lead the company’s staff.

This weekend, Netflix is adding a new Christmas movie, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s latest project, and a spy-adventure TV series. Last weekend, Netflix welcomed the animated movie Storks, the crime thriller Emily the Criminal, the Egyptian movies The Blue Whale and The Master Plan, and Denis Villeneuve’s mystery thriller Prisoners, along with the first part of the documentary series Harry & Meghan, Guillermo del Toro’s stop-motion animated movie Pinocchio, and the Italian rom-com TV series I Hate Christmas.

This weekend, the streaming giant won’t see much licensed added to its catalog, with the addition of the drama movie Critical Thinking, seasons 1 and 2 of The Hills, and Steven Soderbergh’s Side Effects. As for original content, Netflix subscribers will get to enjoy volume 2 of the docuseries Harry & Meghan along with another Christmas movie, a black comedy movie by Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu, and a spy-adventure TV series starring Noah Centineo.

Five Christmas films dominate the VOD charts, led by “The Grinch” (Universal/3.99), challenged only by “Black Adam” (Warner Bros. Discovery/19.99). However, leading the Netflix chart is “Prisoners,” a 10-year-old Warner Bros. thriller starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal that also served as Denis Villeneuve’s English-language debut.

Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinocchio,” one of Netflix’s high-end holiday originals, ranks #3, behind Sony’s “Bullet Train.”

“Grinch,” along with “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (Universal/3.99) and “Elf” (Wbd/3.99), placed on all three charts. Particularly impressive is their showing on Vudu, which calculates by revenue.

Two other holiday titles — “The Holiday” (Sony/3.99) and 47-minute 1964 TV special “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” — also have a single listing. They join “Black Adam,” “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount/4.99), and “Ticket to Paradise” (Universal/19.99) among those making all charts.

New are “She Said” (Universal/19.99). Despite its lack of theatrical interest, it’s #2 at Vudu as well as #8 at iTunes.

“The Batman” star Andy Serkis is set to direct an animated adaptation of George Orwell’s classic novel “Animal Farm.”

Serkis is directing the feature at animation and VFX studio Cinesite (“Riverdance: The Animated Adventure”) from a screenplay by Nick Stoller.

Today HBO announced that it is making nearly 500 hours of original programming and some WarnerMedia-branded movies available for free to all for a limited time. Subscriptions to HBO via cable with HBO Go or via streaming with HBO Now usually cost $15 per month. But starting Friday, April 3, anyone with Internet access will be able to access nine original HBO series and a multitude of other free content via either platform. HBO is unlocking its biggest trove of free programming ever — in a goodwill gesture as people look for a diversion during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The WarnerMedia-owned premium cabler is making almost 500 hours of programming available to stream for free (without ads) for a limited time on HBO Now and HBO Go services without a subscription, starting this Friday, April 3.

The list of free programming includes every episode of nine HBO series: “The Sopranos,” “Veep,” “Succession,” “Six Feet Under,” “The Wire,” “Ballers,” “Barry,” “Silicon Valley” and “True Blood.”

Saturday Am Update: The weekend's new releases are performing mostly as expected, but before we get to them we have to mention WB's Joker, which brought in an estimated $17 million on Friday, to kick off what is looking like a possible $60 million second weekend, signaling a drop that could be less than -40%. A strong performance and a clear sign this film is resonating with audiences.

As for the newcomers, Uar's The Addams Family leading the week's new titles with an estimated $9.6 million on Friday, looking to finish with a $32+ million three-day performance. The film scored a "B+" CinemaScore.

Behind it, Paramount's Gemini Man finished with an estimated $7.5 million Friday, heading toward a $20+ million three-day. The film also received a "B+" CinemaScore from opening day audiences.

Further down the list is Lionsgate's Jexi, which managed $1.14 million on Friday and is expected to finish around $3-3.5 million for the weekend.

Last weekend saw Joker deliver the largest October opening weekend of all-time. However, the overall weekend top twelve was still down -15% compared to last year, which saw not only Venom deliver what was, at the time, the largest October opening weekend, but A Star is Born also opened with nearly $43 million, both en route to $200+ million domestic performances. At the same time, 2018 is still trailing last year's overall yearly performance by nearly -6% and while this weekend offers three new wide releases, they aren't likely to turn the tide. The first animated film of the fall season, and the first in over a month, arrives this weekend in the form of Universal, DreamWorks Animation and Pearl Studio's Abominable and it's looking to top the weekend box office. Behind it is last weekend's strong opener Downton Abbey, while Roadside Attractions looks to crack the top ten with their moderate release of Judy starring Renee Zellweger. DreamWorks Animation and Pearl Studio's Abominable serves as the first animated feature since the release of The Angry Birds Movie 2 back in mid-August and it's opening in a hefty, 4,242 locations. Heading into the weekend, the studio is anticipating an opening anywhere from $17-20 million and that lines up with what we've been looking at as the film enters the weekend with very little heat behind it. Billy Eichner is teaming up with Judd Apatow and Nick Stoller in a romantic comedy for Universal.

Eincher will star in the movie and co-write the screenplay with Stoller, who will direct. Apatow will produce the film about two men with commitment problems attempting a relationship.

It’s the second Apatow project unveiled by Universal in the past week. The studio announced last week that Apatow would direct and produce Pete Davidson’s currently untitled semi-autobiographical comedy. It has already been given a prime summer release date of June 19, 2020.

Eichner is a three-time Emmy nominee for his series, “Billy on the Street.” His credits include “Difficult People” and “Parks and Recreation.” He is currently developing his first comedy special for Netflix. A $28 million opening weekend may not seem like a big achievement at the box office, but for a comedy like Universal’s “Night School,” it’s definitely a win. At a time when only a precious few comedies have found success at the box office, “Night School” has posted the best opening for the genre this year, beating the $20.6 million start for fellow Universal release “Blockers.”

Released on 3,091 screens, the Kevin Hart/Tiffany Haddish film is only a few paces behind the $31 million opening for “Girls Trip,” the previous collaboration between Haddish, director Malcolm D. Lee and producer Will Packer. With a budget of $29 million and a CinemaScore grade of A-, the film is in position to turn a solid profit. Next week it will face steep competition in the form of Sony’s Marvel film “Venom” and Warner Bros.’ awards contender “A Star Is Born.”

Last weekend ended up being the worst overall weekend of the year so far with all films on Mojo's weekend chart totaling a mere $91.8 million with the top twelve grossing just over $81 million. This weekend, however, should find the top twelve alone combining to bring in over $100 million as the month is shaping up to be the second highest grossing September ever, just behind last year's record performance for the month. A year after finding big box office success with “Girls Trip,” Tiffany Haddish, director Malcolm D. Lee, and producer Will Packer are teaming up with Kevin Hart for “Night School,” another comedy that Universal hopes will see long-lasting success thanks to the star power of its two leads.

Last year, “Girls Trip” launched Haddish into mainstream stardom and earned $140 million worldwide against a $19 million budget, becoming yet another flagbearer for Hollywood’s ongoing diversity push. “Night School,” which is slightly more expensive with a $29 million budget after tax incentives, is projected by Universal for an opening around $25 million from 2,900 screens, while independent trackers expect the film to match the $31 million start earned by “Girls Trip.”

The big challenge for “Night School” will be to stay on the radar of general audiences as the box office heads...

Producers John Requa and Glenn Ficarra have generally kept a wide berth between their kid-friendly projects and their more adult material. The best parts of “Smallfoot” see them finding a middle ground, espousing plot points and messaging that you don’t usually find in family fare.

Lurking within this animated tale of yetis and humans are such forward-thinking notions as, “Question everything, including religion,” “Governments use public safety as an excuse for misleading the populace when they really just want to control people,” and “Tribalism benefits people in power more than the communities they claim to want to protect.”

Heady stuff for a mainstream cartoon, but unfortunately “Smallfoot” can’t bear the weight of its big ideas, saddled as it is with fairly mediocre animation, mostly forgettable songs and a resolutely by-the-numbers screenplay by director Karey Kirkpatrick (“Over the Hedge”) and Clare Sera, adapting Sergio Pablos’ book “Yeti Tracks.”

The best thing about the otherwise-abominable “Smallfoot” is the concept: A community of creatures feared by humans — in this case, yetis with giant, bendy bodies and silky CG hair — consider people to be just as frightening, with both sides going far out of their way to avoid the species they don’t understand. That’s a solid idea now, and that was a solid idea when the folks at Pixar came up with it 24 years ago. The problem is, “Smallfoot” is not a Pixar movie. It’s the latest offering from Warner Animation Group, which essentially takes the hook for “Monsters Inc.” (hatched way back in 1994) and turns it into a heavy-handed civics lesson.

Trawling through the box office totals for 2017’s family movie releases is not the cheeriest of jobs. For me, the two most entertaining and funniest have been The Lego Batman Movie and Captain Underpants. Both have the best written gags I’ve enjoyed at the cinema all year, and both have found their box office slightly depressed.

The Lego Batman Movie, for all the noise it rightly made during its release period, actually recorded box office totals a good deal less than most of us would have expected a) for a Lego movie, and b) for a Batman movie. Still, Warner Bros’ marketing machine is busy selling DVDs right now to right that wrong.

But to be honest, this summer has been so good to us, we're more refreshed than usual.

Even aside from originals like Edgar Wright's Baby Driver and Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, this year's blockbusters have been of an unusually high standard. Wonder Woman pulled the Dceu out of its critical nosedive, War For The Planet Of The Apes is a gorgeous and emotional conclusion to the reboot trilogy, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming proved that Marvel's ever expanding continuity is still going strong.

Unless you have fond memories of Dav Pilkey's series of books, it's entirely possible that Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie has tra-la-laaa'd its way into cinemas under your radar. Hopefully, you'll seek it out, because this is the funniest and most creative film to come out of DreamWorks Animation in a long time.

The imaginations fuelling the story are fourth-grade children George and Harold (voiced by Kevin Hart and Thomas Middleditch), who break up the monotony of their life at the unusually austere Jerome Horwitz Elementary School by drawing comics, playing pranks and generally trying to make each other laugh.

There’s no question that – despite the timeless Marvel vs. DC debate (or perhaps because of it?) – superhero cinema is here to stay for a long time. The recent releases of such critically acclaimed efforts as Logan and this week’s Wonder Woman, however, underscore the genre’s need to explore some fresh approaches to comic book storytelling, lest the million think pieces heralding the cinematic fall of superheroes come to fruition. HBO has garnered acclaim for their prestige TV offerings, but one of their most underrated contributions to the television landscape is 2015’s “7 Days in Hell,” a mockumentary of the infamous John Isner/Nicolas Mahut Wimbledon showdown that shattered the record for longest tennis match in history. On the strengths of stars Andy Samberg and Kit Harrington, “7 Days in Hell” also took aim at a few of the legendary tennis rivalries of the 70s, 80s and 90s that brought the sport into the mainstream.

It’s a goofy, perfectly timed spoof that plays with the familiar tropes of sports docs, namely the ones in Espn’s “30 for 30” series. Apparently, it worked so well that HBO wanted more. Samberg and “7 Days in Hell” writer Murray Miller have reteamed for another trip through niche sports history with “Tour de Pharmacy,” a fictional look at a doping scandal in the world of 80s cycling.

Captain Underpants is based on the book series of the same name, and centres on a pair of school pranksters who aggravate their principal to the point that he moves to separate them into separate classes, vowing, “I’m going to annihilate your friendship.” The book series will be remembered by those who grew up in the late 1990s and early 2000s for its silliness and total dedication to all things excrement, toilets, wedgies, underpants and snot, so expect a ton of toilet humour.
