Both Anya Taylor-Joy and Shea Whigham were set as the leads before dropping out. They were replaced by Sophie Turner and Dylan McDermott.
The script was featured on the 2014 Blacklist, a list of the most liked scripts of the year.
The head of Acquisitions of Light Entertainment, Bobby Rock, compared the character of Sophie Turner to Kathleen Turner in Body Heat (1981). Rock says, "her mystery and power draw you right in."
In the scene in which Hank and Josie are at the marina, Josie suggests that Hank should buy a boat named Tortuga. Tortuga is Spanish for "tortoise". Hank has two pet tortoises in the film.
