This essay by Betty Gabriel on her scariest movie of all-time is one of several contributed as part of Variety’s 100 Best Horror Movies of All Time package.
What “Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein” lacks in jump scares and other familiar horror tropes, it makes up for in its homage to the source material. The author’s name is in the title, and considering how influential this novel has been — and how, in the original film, she’s credited as Mrs. Percy Shelley — it is a significant gesture.
Kenneth Branagh, the Shakespearean wiz of my dreams, brings that passionate theatricality to this piece, and steers the ship with dramatic heft and kinetic electricity. The rest of the cast, most of whom have Oscar nominations by the way, is dynamic, particularly Helena Bonham Carter and especially towards the end.
It’s primarily a drama with loads of romance, but not without a...

Back in July, it was announced that Tessa Thompson of the Thor and Creed franchises had signed on to star in and executive produce a limited series called His & Hers that will stream on Netflix. Since then, we’ve heard the names of several actors who have joined Thompson in the cast – and now we know the names of ten more! Deadline reports that Rhoda Griffis (The Blind Side), newcomer Tiffany Ho, Dave Maldonado (The Tomorrow War), Kristen Maxwell (Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin), Leah Merritt (Friendship Never Dies), Mike Pniewski (Hightown), Astrid Rotenberry (American Sports Story), newcomer Ellie Rose Sawyer, and Jamie Tisdale (From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series) have all landed recurring roles on the show. Also new to the cast, taking on a recurring role, is Isabelle Kusman, who has previously worked on three feature films. Those films have given her the opportunity to work with Paul Thomas Anderson,...

The Netflix limited series adaptation of the Alice Feeney novel “His & Hers” has added four new cast members.
Crystal Fox, Sunita Mani, and Rebecca Rittenhouse have joined as series regulars, with Marin Ireland set in a supporting role. They will star alongside previously announced cast members Tessa Thompson as well as Jon Bernthal and Pablo Schreiber. Netflix has commissioned six episodes, with production set to begin this fall.
The official description for the series states, “Set in the sweltering heat of Atlanta, Anna (Thompson) lives in haunting reclusivity, fading away from her friends and career as a news anchor. But when she overhears about a murder in Dahlonega – the sleepy town where she grew up – Anna is snapped back to life, pouncing on the case and searching for answers. Detective Jack Harper (Bernthal) is strangely suspicious of her involvement, chasing her into the crosshairs of his own investigation. There...

August has been a wild ride so far. Between art house discussions of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Santa Sangre (listen) and Paul Morrissey’s Blood for Dracula (listen), we squeezed in a look at screenlife sequel Unfriended: Dark Web (listen). Now we’re ready for more contemporary foreign content with Julia Ducournau‘s sophomore feature, Titane (2021).
In the film, after a run of poorly timed murders, serial killer Alexia (Agathe Rousselle) goes on the run from the police. After shaving her head and breaking her nose, Alexia disguises herself as “Adrien,” the long-missing son of aging fire captain Vincent (Vincent Lindon).
The distraught father pledges to protect his offspring from harm, but considering Alexia’s literal Cadillac ride (ie: sex) has resulted in pregnancy, how long can Alexia or Vincent keep up the ruse? And what happens if/when the truth comes out?

Wirgin Worries.
After kicking off August with discussions of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s surrealist masterpiece Santa Sangre (listen) and the screenlife sequel Unfriended: Dark Web (listen), we’re returning to the world of Andy Warhol with a look at Paul Morrissey‘s Udo Kier-starring vehicle Blood for Dracula (1974).
In the film, the deathly ill Count Dracula (Udo Kier) and his slimy underling Anton (Arno Juerging) travel to Italy in search of a virgin’s blood (the only type of blood he can drink). They’re welcomed at the crumbling estate of indebted Marchese Di Fiore (Vittorio De Sica), who’s desperate to marry off his daughters to rich suitors. But there, instead of pure women, the count encounters siblings with impure (aka not virgin) blood and their Marxist manservant Mario (Joe D’Allesandro), who’s suspicious of the aristocratic Dracula.

Paul Feig and Jason Blum are joining forces for the first time, for the upcoming thriller Worst Roommate Ever. More here.
Paul Feig’s to-do list is growing, it seems. The Bridesmaids director already has a couple of films on his slate, but that hasn’t stopped him from teaming up with Jason Blum to announce Worst Roommate Ever, a planned thriller that will take inspiration from the unscripted TV drama of the same name.
The plot for this one certainly sounds fascinating, as does the idea of Feig collaborating with horror producer Jason Blum. The film’s story ‘follows a newly single woman finding a seemingly perfect gentleman to sublet the spare room in her dream home. She soon learns his deceit goes beyond a phony name and application as she has unwittingly invited a serial squatter into her home, and he won’t leave without a fight.’

Paul Feig has tickled the funny bone several times as the director of “Bridesmaids,” “The Heat,” and “Freaks and Geeks,” but funnily enough, his latest film will instead have him for the first time tackling the horror genre.
Feig is set to direct an untitled thriller for Blumhouse about a really bad roommate, and the film will draw from the same source material that inspired the Netflix true crime docuseries “Worst Roommate Ever.” This is actually the first time Blumhouse is producing both an unscripted series and a scripted thriller based on the same source material.
The film will be an original story written by Stephen Susco (“Unfriended: Dark Web”), but it is inspired by William Brennan’s New Yorker article that served as the basis for “Worst Roommate Ever,” which was also produced by Blumhouse. From Blumhouse Television, the documentary series “Worst Roommate Ever” highlights harrowing tales of seemingly harmless roommates turning into real-life nightmares for their unsuspecting victims, and that series (which airs on Netflix) was based on a New York Magazine article by William Brennan. Blumhouse is now turning that same article into a movie.
Variety reports this week that Paul Feig will direct the upcoming feature film thriller for Blumhouse.
The website details, “Feig’s film will follow a newly single woman who finds a ‘seemingly perfect gentleman’ to sublet a spare room in her home. However, she quickly discovers that his lies extend beyond providing a fake name and falsified application.
“She has unwittingly invited a serial squatter into her home and he’s not going to leave without a fight.”
Stephen Susco (Unfriended: Dark Web) wrote the screenplay.
Feig will produce with his producing partner Laura Fischer, alongside Jason Blum.

Back when Unfriended was still going by the title of Cybernatural, director Leo Gabriadze said he came onto the project because he was attracted to the story’s subject matter. Nelson Greaves’ script demonstrated how personal harassment had since changed in the digital age; in particular those younger people whose torment went beyond the classroom. The internet had not only made a bully’s reach greater but also unavoidable. And in true horror fashion, Unfriended provided an unsettling portrayal of victimhood as well as sadistic retribution from beyond the grave.
Unfriended immediately broke tradition by staying close to home as opposed to traveling to the deep, dark woods or anywhere else teens tend to go and die in horror. More unusual was the unexciting premise of these characters video-chatting all night instead of meeting in person at an ominous social event of some kind. After years of critics reproaching the...

Plot: The high-profile case of serial killer Ludovic Chevalier has just gone to trial, and Kelly-Anne is obsessed. When reality blurs with her morbid fantasies, she goes down a dark path to seek the final piece of the puzzle: the missing video of a murdered 13-year-old girl, to whom Kelly-Anne bears a disturbing resemblance.
Review: There’s a certain level of expectation present when Fantasia selects the opening film for their festival. It sets the tone for the rest of the lineup of films so my hopes for Red Rooms were very high. Add to that the fact that the French (even of the Canadian variety) know how to do horror like no other, and I was very excited. Red Rooms hits a nerve almost immediately, diving deep into the trial of serial killer, Ludovic Chevalier. They set up the evidence in such a disturbing way, all without showing you anything.

“The enigma is that my body simultaneously sees and is seen. That which looks at all things can also look at itself and recognize, in what it sees, the ‘other side’ of its power of looking. It sees itself seeing; it touches itself touching; it is visible and sensible for itself… It is a self… that is caught up in things, that has a front and a back, a past and a future…”—Maurice Merleau-Ponty, “Eye and Mind”Jane Schoenbrun’s We’re All Going to the World’s Fair opens with a teenage girl (Anna Cobb) sitting at her bedroom desk, snacking absentmindedly on a packet of string cheese. While I was mentally prepared to stay inside for most of 2020, like many others, I wasn't necessarily expecting to be staying inside for most of 2022 as well. The “John Wick” prequel series at Starz, “The Continental,” has cast Colin Woodell in the lead role, Variety has learned.
Woodell will star as a young Winston Scott, the character played in the film franchise by Ian McShane. “The Continental” will explore the origin behind the titular hotel-for-assassins through the eyes and actions of Scott, who is dragged into the Hell-scape of a 1975 New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind. Winston charts a deadly course through the New York’s mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the iconic hotel, which serves as the meeting point for the world’s most dangerous criminals.
Woodell is now the second cast member announced for the series. It was previously announced that Mel Gibson would appear as a new character named Cormac.

The summer movie season continues on its road to recovery and normalcy, with four new wide releases hitting screens. Still, studios are holding back their big guns for now, as roughly one-third of theaters remain closed and capacity restrictions remain in place at many locations. The past few months have shown promising box office results from films such as Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat, and Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, but it may still take some time before the box office returns to its former glory, with the major test coming over Memorial Day weekend when Cruella and A Quiet Place Part II face off.
Coming in the first place this weekend will likely be Spiral, the ninth entry in the Saw franchise, this time with a new take that puts Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson in the lead roles. Rock also executive produced and worked on the story for the film,...

Buddy movies and road trip movies are two time-honored cinematic genres, and Half Brothers manages to disappoint in both of them. This story of two siblings attempting to fulfill their dying father’s last request uneasily veers between juvenile comedy and schmaltzy sentimentality, managing to produce neither laughs nor tears.
Not that it doesn’t try very hard, starting with its high-concept storyline involving Renato (Luis Gerardo Méndez, Charlie’s Angels), a successful Mexican aeronautics entrepreneur, and Asher (Connor Del Rio, Unfriended: Dark Web), the younger brother he never knew he had. As a child, Renato was devoted to his engineer ...

Given that Halloween is just around the corner, horror films and series are enjoying a successful run on Netflix right now. As well as The Haunting of Bly Manor and, um, Hubie Halloween, the service has been dusting off some recent classics, including a couple that perhaps didn’t get as much attention as they deserved on their initial release. 2014’s Internet-based flick Unfriended, which was just added to the streaming site this past week, is certainly one to catch up on, and has already broken into the Top 10 most-watched movies list on the platform.
Directed by Levan Gabriadze, Unfriended is unique in taking place almost completely through computer screens and follows a group of high schoolers who gradually realize that a supernatural presence is haunting them via their chats and social media pages, with ties to a suicide becoming clearer as the story progresses. In the early days of smartphone video, shooting something vertically amounted to sacrilege to many purists who believed only in landscape orientation. Snapchat and TikTok eroded that sentiment enough that the upcoming Quibi platform will let viewers watch mobile-only shows both vertically and horizontally. Now, pioneering filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov is taking it a step further: His upcoming $10 million film “V2. Escape From Hell” is a World War II drama shot with vertical framing and smartphone audiences in mind.
Deadline reports the movie will be the world’s first blockbuster shot in that orientation. Production starts next week on the Russian film, starring Pavel Priluchny as Mikhail Devyatayev, a captured Soviet pilot who leads an escape from a German concentration camp by hijacking an aircraft.

Even though their flagship show already has nine seasons under its belt, it looks like AMC is deadset on expanding and growing their TV adaptations of The Walking Dead, despite the fact that the Robert Kirkman-created comics ended earlier this month. To date, there are close to 200 episodes between the main series and Fear The Walking Dead, and AMC shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

“Get Out” scene-stealer Betty Gabriel may have had her breakout moment as the film’s creepy housekeeper Georgina, but she’s been toiling away in the haunted horror Blumhouse for years now. “I guess I have an affinity towards darkness, the dark side,” she said. “The movies are very on the fringe. They live in a very dark place.”
It’s a far different life for herself than Gabriel had first imagined. Although she recalls acting in a church play and putting on skits as a child growing up on the East Coast, she never thought of herself as a performer. Instead, she envisioned working with animals and even earned a Bachelor’s degree in animal science at the Iowa State University.

Right now we're expecting a second weekend drop right around -54% for a sophomore frame totaling $26 million or so. MGM's Creed II could face some competition for second in Universal and Illumination's The Grinch, but we're expecting it to edge out the animated title with a drop right around -50% for an $18 million second weekend...

Years before he produced “Halloween,” this year’s biggest horror hit, Ryan Turek was nowhere close to developing films: He was commenting on horror blogs’ message boards.
Turek moved to Los Angeles in 1999 with dreams of becoming a screenwriter. He never imagined masterminding a “Halloween” film that has grossed $76 million its opening weekend, breaking records in the process.
It’s a story of the unconventional way Blumhouse does business — and harnessing the power and passion of fandom into box-office dominance. The company hired Turek based on his passion, obsession and expertise on the horror genre, and proved they’d rather listen to a true fan than an executive who might not know horror.
