Small town cop Roberto Rossi prefers to do things his own way in Urbino. As long as he only asks tourists to pay, nobody gets in his way. His best friend, the budding forensic doctor Malpomena del Vecchio, has more confidence in him. But so far the usually ill-tempered "Poliziotto" sees no reason for excessive ambition. His well-rehearsed working day comes to an abrupt end when he discovers a disfigured corpse. The beautiful Carmela Tozzi is laid out in the cisterns deep below the Palazzo Ducale: her eyes glued with tree wax, a Bible on her chest and the traces of a rape on her thighs. Everything points to ritual murder and requires a skilled investigator. Because all the commissioners are sick, Rossi is forced to solve this scary case. His vain superior Commander Nevio Cottelli and the unscrupulous Vice Mayor Enrico Manchetti do not make it easy for him. Both want someone to blame quickly, so they push for them The frightened fruit dealer Ciro, for whom the dead woman worked, is arrested. But Rossi, who is making slow progress, does not want to participate. He receives a helpful tip from a new resident, of all people, whom he loves to cover with traffic knobs and have them towed away. Malpomena, on the other hand, appreciates the expertise of the charming detective inspector a. D. Thilo Gruber. Of course, that makes him even less likeable to the jealous Poliziotto.

It's time for the harvest again in Marche. Poliziotto Rossi also goes to his olive grove. There he finds the body of Prof. Saltari under a tree. Malpomena del Vecchio's death comes as a shock: for many years the respected forensic doctor was a mentor for her. The traces at the place where they were found give the two puzzles: As if the corpse had still walked around, they find unusual shoe prints there. That is scary to the superstitious patrolman. The story of tramp Luigi makes him shudder: He claims to have been run over by the legendary golem on the night of the crime. Mystical rumors quickly make the rounds in the village, where everything revolves around the current prices of the oil mill operator Piedro at this time of the year. Comandante Cottelli does not believe in the supernatural but rather suspects the Camorra behind the matter. Finally, Saltari testified against them. While the Poliziotto is investigating with a bad feeling in his stomach, the next bad news comes: His brother Osvaldo has disappeared without a trace, he had recently explored the ancient catacombs under the city with Prof. Saltari. But the traces so far don't really reveal anything. Ironically, the annoying inspector a. D. Thilo Gruber, moved from Germany, and an old painting put Rossi on the right track.
