Gavin Creel, a staple of modern musical theater whose career included a Tony Award win for Hello, Dolly!, has passed away. He was 48.

Creel’s partner, Alex Temple Ward, confirmed his death to the New York Times on Monday via a publicist. Creel had been diagnosed with a rare type of soft tissue sarcoma, known as metastatic melanotic peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma, in July.

Warner Bros. Pictures Animation has hired Shane Prigmore to serve as Senior Creative Advisor for the newly relaunched film unit under President Bill Damaschke.

In addition to advising on creative development for Wbpa’s ambitious production slate, Prigmore will also direct a film for the unit. He will be based at the studio’s HQ in Burbank, reporting directly to Damaschke.

A veteran of Skydance Animation, Walt Disney Television Animation, DreamWorks Animation, and Laika, the Annie Award winner returns to Warner Bros. more than two decades after the company gave him his start on the seminal animated classic The Iron Giant.

Prigmore’s announcement comes just as Damaschke has outlined his strategy for the newly relaunched features animation division to energize its legacy IP and develop partnerships with artists and creators worldwide to foster a slate of original storytelling resonant with global audiences of all ages.

Exclusive: Conservative media firm The Daily Wire has optioned exclusive film and TV series rights to develop and produce an adaptation of Ayn Rand’s dystopian 1957 novel Atlas Shrugged, the author’s most heralded work.

The company is planning to produce a series adaptation for distribution on its streaming platform, Dailywire+. Daily Wire co-ceo Jeremy Boreing just announced the deal in a livestreamed town hall address.

Atlas Shrugged, which has sold more than 7 million copies worldwide, depicts a dystopian United States in which private businesses suffer under increasingly burdensome laws and regulations.

The Daily Wire, the conservative media outlet founded by Ben Shapiro, has hired a Disney veteran to help grow its subscription streaming business.

The company has tapped Eric Caballero as its new CMO, overseeing all marketing for the company, particularly as it continues to invest in the entertainment business, arguing that legacy companies like Disney have abandoned their family-friendly roots.

Caballero most recently worked as VP in Disney’s media and entertainment distribution group.

Among other projects, Caballero will lead marketing for The Daily Wire+, the company’s streaming platform. While it includes politically-focused content from The Daily Wire as well as some other conservative programming, the company is moving further into entertainment, committing 100 million to produce kids and family fare, and expanding into original movies (including a Gina Carano led offering called Terror on the Prairie).

Chris Sonnenburg, an Emmy-winning showrunner for Disney series Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure, will serve as Senior VP of Animation Development and Production. He will oversee a team of writers and animators that include Eric Branscum and Ethan Nicolle. Also joining is David ‘Kentucky’ Coleman from Pure Imagination Studios as EVP of kids content.

Jennifer Hudson won a Daytime Emmy Thursday for her role as executive producer in Baobab Studios’ “Baba Yaga,” putting her one award short of achieving Egot status.

VR animated film “Baba Yaga,” made for the Oculus Quest, won in the interactive media for a daytime program category. Hudson starred alongside Glenn Close, Kate Winslet and Daisy Ridley, who also voiced characters. But it was Hudson’s role as executive producer that garnered her the Daytime Emmy Award.

Hudson already has an Oscar, winning for supporting actress in 2007 for her role in “Dreamgirls.” She also has two Grammy awards including Best R&b Album and Best Musical Theater Album. All she needs is the Tony Award to achieve the Egot. And she came close in 2016, but was shockingly snubbed when the Broadway revival of “The Color Purple” landed four nominations with Hudson missing out.

Lin-Manuel Miranda and co-lead Leslie Odom Jr. earned nominations in the lead actor in a limited or anthology series or movie category for their performances as Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, respectively.

The holiday season is here and Pixar has a little gift for Disney+ subscribers.

After the animation studio’s next major effort was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, the powers that be finally made the decision to release it on Disney’s streaming service. And that’s why you will now be able to watch Soul via Disney+ on Christmas Day. Soul stars Jamie Foxx as Joe Gardner – an inspiring jazz musician who finally gets his chance when his soul enters the Great Beyond.

Soul isn’t the only gift on Disney+ in December 2020. The sure-to-be-thrilling finale of The Mandalorian season 2 will arrive on Dec. 18. After those two beg exciting tentpoles, it’s pretty much business as usual for Disney+ this month (not that that’s necessarily a bad thing). An original movie of note, Safety, premieres on Dec. 11 and should at least be of interest to Clemson football fans.

The Mouse House recently revealed that they’re looking to make exclusive streaming content their number one priority moving forward, which is just as well because at the moment, Disney Plus doesn’t have too many options for original movies and TV series that have the potential to grab headlines and dominate the online conversation.

Sure, Hamilton was a huge success, but aside from that and, obviously The Mandalorian, there haven’t been a whole lot of high profile titles added in 2020. Mulan may have generated a lot of attention despite being locked behind a paywall, but it’s probably fair to say that for the most part, the blockbuster received the opposite kind of publicity from what Disney were hoping for.

Variety‘s 10 Animators to Watch will be honored this year during an hour-long panel presented by Nickelodeon. The discussion will celebrate the up-and-coming talent in the industry and present Variety‘s annual Creative Impact in Animation award to “Book of Life” and “Maya and the Three” animator Jorge Gutiérrez.

WarnerMedia has acquired the rights to new animated show “Master Moley,” starring Warwick Davis and Gemma Arterton, for its children’s platform Boomerang in more than 100 countries across Europe, Middle East and Africa. “Master Moley” is based on original stories written by British entrepreneur James Reatchlous, who spoke to Variety about how it came to life.

The deal, struck by Jetpack Distribution, will see the animation’s 30-minute special, “Master Moley By Royal Invitation,” head to the channel in November. The acquisition of the new 52-part series, comprising 11-minute episodes, “The Misadventures of Master Moley,” will continue the adventures of Master Moley and friends on Boomerang next year.

The animation follows adventurous mole Master Moley, who lives deep in a burrow under Queen Elizabeth II’s Windsor Castle in the bustling city of MoleTown, where he is the keeper of a magical book, which has the power to bring peace between humans and moles.

Shane Prigmore, the animation veteran who has worked for Laika, DreamWorks Animation, Warner Bros and most recently at Walt Disney Television Animation, has been hired as SVP Development at Skydance Animation. He will be tasked with overseeing the creative development of all films and TV series on the studio’s production slate.

That slate includes the upcoming feature filsm Luck, directed by Peggy Holmes, and Spellbound, directed by Vicky Jenson, both due in 2022; and Pookoo, written and directed by Nathan Greno. The studio run by John Lasseter and Holly Edwards has been ramping up hiring and recently expanded to form Skydance Animation Madrid.

So… how does it feel to be an Egot?

I didn’t take it on as a life goal, but I have to admit that since it didn’t happen after a few times, I thought it wasn’t important. When it finally happened and I got the call saying I had finally won, I was surprised at how excited I was. On some deep level, it certainly does mean something to me.

9 Story Distribution International has taken world sales rights to animated TV show “Guitar & Drum,” co-produced by Chile’s Punkrobot Animation Studio, producers of the Academy Award-winning short “Bear Story” and Brazil’s Hype Animation.

A 52-part preschool series, “Guitar & Drum” celebrates diversity following these two musical instruments who, with other instruments, are all best friends. Each instrument has a unique sound, but when they come together they can make a beautiful melody.

“’Guitar & Drum’ is a beautiful series with important messages about inclusivity which we’re thrilled to bring to an international audience,” said 9 Story’s Candice Chambers.

The series is directed by Antonia Herrera and María Elisa Soto-Aguilar.

There’s at least one chance for the Daytime Emmys to right a wrong. Jason Alexander is nominated twice for “Brainwashed by Toons,” which explores some of the harmful tropes that have been perpetuated by children’s cartoons over the years. Alexander’s nominated tune, “The Bad Guys?,” looks at the history of anti-Semitic imagery.

Composer Alan Menken is nominated for Best Original Song for a Children’s, Young Adult or Animated Program at the 2020 Daytime Emmys for penning “Waiting in the Wings” from “Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure” on the Disney Channel. If he wins, he’ll finally complete his Egot grand slam as he has already won at the Grammys, Oscars and Tonys.

Menken got his Got a while ago. He has won a remarkable eight Oscars, which makes him the second most awarded person at those kudos for music, behind nine-time champ Alfred Newman. The first of those came 30 years ago when he won Best Original Song (“Under the Sea”) and Best Original Score for “The Little Mermaid” (1989). That animated film also won him the first of his 11 career Grammys: Best Recording for Children and Best Visual Media Song (also for “Under the Sea”) in 1991.

ABC’s venerable soap General Hospital leads all shows and CBS and Amazon Prime Video top all networks in nominations for the 47th annual Daytime Emmy Awards, which were unveiled Thursday. Winners will be revealed June 26 during a live virtual ceremony on CBS, returning the awards show to broadcast primetime for the first time since 2011.

General Hospital scored a total of 23 noms, edging rivals NBC’s Days of Our Lives (22 noms) and CBS’ Young and the Restless (21) and The Bold and the Beautiful (13). The digital soaps followed, led by Netflix’s Eastsiders and Amazon Prime’s Studio City both with eight noms apiece.

All four broadcast soaps are up for the top drama series honor, while Eastsiders and Studio City are joined by Amazon Prime’s After Forever, The Bay The Series and Dark/Web in the top digital drama race.

Jetpack Distribution has snagged the rights to “Master Moley” and will sell the animated series internationally. There is both a one-off “Master Moley” special and an accompanying series.

The special has a standout voice cast including Warwick Davis (“Harry Potter”), who will also executive produce. Signature Entertainment is selling the special and handling U.K. distribution, while Jetpack is handling the 52-part 11-minute series.

Other stars lending their voices to the special include Julie Walters (“Mamma Mia!”), Gemma Arterton (“Their Finest”), Richard E. Grant (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”), Togo Igawa (“Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again”) and Charles Dance (“Game of Thrones”).

Russi Taylor, who voiced various animated characters including Disney’s Minnie Mouse, died Friday in Glendale, Calif., our sister site Deadline reports. She was 75.

Taylor brought the iconic mouse to life for more than 30 years, in TV shows, movies, theme-park attractions and other Disney endeavors. As recently as this year, she voiced the character in Mickey and the Roadster Racers and some Mickey Mouse shorts.

Russi Taylor, a voice actor and Disney legend who was the official voice of Minnie Mouse for many years, died in Glendale, Calif. on Friday, according to the Walt Disney Company. She was 75 years old.

Taylor first assumed the Minnie Mouse role more than 30 years ago and gave it voice in hundreds of Disney projects, including television, theme park experiences, animated shorts, and theatrical films.

“Minnie Mouse lost her voice with the passing of Russi Taylor,” Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of the Walt Disney Company, said in a statement Saturday.

Sean Hayes has been named Roast Master for the “Comedy Central Roast of Alec Baldwin,” which will tape on Sept. 7 and premiere eight days later.

“It’s always been my dream to roast a Hollywood legend, so when they asked me to roast Alec Baldwin I said ‘close enough’,” Hayes said.
