While the numbers won’t officially be known until later in the week, it was determined by Netflix over the weekend that 60 million households were tuned into the Tyson and Paul fight, a little under a quarter of their total subscribers. With 6,000 bars/restaurants also streaming the match, it was also found to be the most commercially distributed combat sports event ever.

But whether at home or at the watering hole, the Tyson and Paul fight was marred by seemingly constant lags — and we’re talking about the streaming itself. According to Downdetector, there were around 90,000 reports of streaming issues with Netflix...

Jake Paul and Mike Tyson’s heavyweight boxing match was viewed by an estimated 60 million households globally, peaking at 65 million “concurrent streams,” according to data shared by Netflix.

More data will be released in the coming days, including total viewer numbers, the streamer said. Also, Netflix said 50 million households globally tuned in live for the co-main event of Serrano vs. Taylor 2, which the streamer predicted would “likely be the most watched professional women’s sporting event in US history” once final results are tabulated.

As for the main card, after eight rounds, Paul, 27, claimed victory over former world heavyweight champion Tyson, 58, in a unanimous decision.

The Mike Tyson and Jake Paul fight certainly had an outcome that fans did not expect. Although there was a lot of banter in the weeks leading up, Paul winning the fight has left a bittersweet feeling in the hearts of some and utter disappointment for the rest.

Netflix says that users of its advertising tier have surged in the past six months, and that the ad tier now has 70 million monthly active users globally. That is up from only 40 million just six months ago, and up from 15 million a year ago.

The company also reiterated that more than half of new users are subscribing to an ad tier, helping to drive that growth.

The company disclosed the new numbers on the two year anniversary of launching the ad tier, and also made a number of other advertising-related announcements, in a post authored by advertising chief Amy Reinhard.

For starters, the streaming giant says that it has sold out of advertising inventory during its two Christmas Day NFL games, with FanDuel and Verizon among the sponsors. FanDuel will be the official sportsbook partner, with an in-game segment featuring on-air talent; Verizon, meanwhile, will be the kickoff sponsor.

Warner Bros Discovery (Wbd) has renewed its broadcast agreement with All Elite Wrestling (Aew) that keeps the professional sports brand’s flagship shows on Wbd-owned channels for a few more years.

As part of the agreement, “Aew Dynamite” will continue to air Wednesdays on TBS and “Aew Collision” will maintain its Saturday time slot on TNT. In addition to its regular weekly broadcasts, both shows will also be offered through the streaming service Max, with live simulcasts from TBS and TNT as well as on-demand replays for subscribers in the United States. The simulcasts start in January.

The two companies will also collaborate on other initiatives, including distribution of clips and production of original programming for social media platforms. Max will also offer subscribers in the United States access to Aew pay-per-view events, with pricing expected to be revealed at a later date.

Warner Bros. Discovery and All Elite Wrestling have reached a multi-year renewal, shoring up the programming of foundational linear networks TNT and TBS and adding streaming simulcasts on Max.

Five years ago, prior to its merger with Discovery, WarnerMedia teamed with Aew to launch the pro wrestling circuit. While still overshadowed by the WWE, the Aew has had a solid run and proved to be a year-round ratings draw.

Under the new agreement, Wbd’s networks and platforms will remain the exclusive home of Aew Dynamite (Wednesdays on TBS) and Aew Collision (Saturdays on TNT). Terms also call for enhanced distribution rights across social platforms as well as what the companies called “building opportunities” for more Aew programming across linear and digital down the line.

Wbd’s flagship streaming service Max also will for the first time stream Aew programming live, beginning in January.

Aew live pay-per-view events also will be distributed via Max at a discounted price per event, the companies said, with all marketing and promotion of those happening exclusively on Max. Those events will start appearing on Max “later in 2025,” according to a press release, with details including pricing to be revealed in the coming months.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but according to sources, the deal is valued at $185 million per year when all elements are taken into account. Looking to receive a title match against World Heavyweight Champion Gunther, Sami Zayn took on The Ring General’s right-hand man Ludwig Kaiser. Kaiser used the ringside area to his advantage by knocking Zayn off to the top of the barricade into the timekeeper’s area and by dropkicking Zayn directly into the ring steps. Despite the repeated abuse from Kaiser, Zayn hit the Helluva Kick to gain the impressive win. After the match, Gunther once again refused to defend the World Heavyweight Title against Zayn.

The chants seemed to distract Dunne as The Celtic Warrior dodged a hand crusher to perform an Alabama slam directly onto the announce table. Dunne withstood a monumental amount of punishment from The Celtic Warrior but kept fighting. After being brutalized with the 10 Beats of the Bodhran, Dunne went for the Shillelagh, but Sheamus wrenched it from Dunne’s hands. With the referee preoccupied with taking away the weapon from Sheamus, Dunne used a cricket bat to wallop Sheamus. Dunne then hit a huge knee strike to earn the big-time win.

“Heels” is now officially streaming both of its seasons on Netflix, giving the former Starz series a chance to capture a much bigger audience than it ever had before.

As “WWE SmackDown” shifts channels from Fox to USA Network on Friday as part of WWE’s recent rights deal, the show’s viewership has been up 7% year over year in the key 18-49 demographic, according to data from Nielsen shared by the company. “SmackDown” has averaged 840,000 viewers in the demo per week this year to date, compared with 788,000 per week in the same period in 2023.

The show faces a challenging future, with viewership numbers likely to dip given the smaller overall penetration of USA Network on cable compared with broadcast network Fox, as well as the return of college football. But the “SmackDown” increase in real viewership is particularly impressive amid the ongoing decline of traditional linear programming, with the number of 18-49-year-olds watching TV overall down 13% vs.

With the UFC’s ESPN deal set to expire, Tko president-COO and former ESPN executive Mark Shapiro says the mixed martial arts league led by Dana White wants to ink a renewal with Disney during a three-month negotiating window from Jan. 15 to April 15.

For comedy fans of a certain age, watching VHS copies of the 1982 concert film “Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip” until the tape fell off of the spools was a rite of passage.
