Guy Ritchie is back with The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Based on what is allegedly the first “Black Ops” mission it’s a variation on The Dirty Dozen and all the knock-offs that followed, right up to and including Inglourious Basterds.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare opens with a boat having just been boarded by several members of the German Navy. As they pour gasoline over the deck, they tell its occupants they have the choice of staying on board and burning to death, or jumping overboard and drowning. For some reason, however, they don’t seem very worried.
From there we jump back 25 days, to Churchill watching newsreel footage about Hitler’s U-boats keeping American troops from entering the war.

John Oliver had a lot of news to catch up on in Sunday’s Last Week Tonight — five months, in fact.
During the first 15 minutes or so of his first show back since the Writers Guild of America strike ended, he blazed through the biggest news stories that happened during the 148-day strike.
“I’d have loved to have covered all of these stories back when they originally happened,” he said after recapping the news. ” I wish so much I could have told you these jokes at the time, but I couldn’t because our writers, the people who wrote those jokes, were forced to strike for a fair contract for the last five months. And it was an immensely difficult time, not just for them but for everyone else working on this show and many others who could no longer do their jobs. And to be clear, this strike happened for good reasons.

Jackie Chan and John Cena star in Hidden Strike, an action movie which sat on a shelf for five years only to become a surprise hit on Netflix. How’s that for a glow-up? The streaming service has dropped its Top Ten for the past week and Hidden Strike has taken the number one spot for the second week in a row with 23.5 million views.
Jackie Chan and John Cena play two ex-special force soldiers who must escort a group of civilians along Badhdad’s Highway of Death to the safety of the Green Zone. Hidden Strike was shot back in September 2018, so this one has remained under the radar for quite some time.

Despite co-starring Jackie Chan and John Cena and costing $80,000,000 Hidden Strike, originally titled Project X-Traction, has sat on a shelf for five years before just now turning up on Netflix. That raises more than a few questions about its quality because you don’t sit on something like that without a reason. Usually a very good reason.
Set sometime in “the near future” a Chinese-owned refinery in Iraq is under attack by unnamed rebel forces. A team of mercenaries under the command of Luo Feng is sent in to evacuate all 498 employees, including his estranged daughter Mei, down the Highway of Death to the safety of Baghdad Green Zone.
Elsewhere, Chris Van Horne an ex-Marine who remained in Iraq after the war needs money to repair the water system for the village he lives in.

A new trailer for Hidden Strike has been released, which finds Jackie Chan and John Cena playing two ex-special force soldiers who must escort a group of civilians along Badhdad’s Highway of Death to the safety of the Green Zone.
If Hidden Strike has slipped under your radar, you’re not alone. The movie was actually shot all the way back in September of 2018 and has been sitting on a shelf ever since. To put that in context, John Cena hadn’t yet been seen in Bumblebee, F9, or The Suicide Squad. Jackie Chan plays a Chinese private security contractor who is called to extract oil workers from a China-run oil refinery in the Middle East when it’s attacked. But that’s a smokescreen for an oil heist, and Chan’s character needs the help of an American former Marine (John Cena) to stop the thieves.

Back in 2020, prior to the debut of "Star Trek: Picard," lead actor Patrick Stewart explained to several reporters that he would only return to the show if he wasn't required to wear a Starfleet uniform. He didn't want to simply go back to the same schtick seen on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" some 30 years earlier, preferring to revisit Picard as a retired civilian. While this is a reasonable demand, a "Star Trek" series that wasn't about Starfleet, or that didn't take place on a starship that was actively trekking, proved difficult for the writers. The first two seasons of "Picard" centered on outsized, byzantine mysteries that involved interdimensional robots (in season 1) and causality loops (in season 2). There was no formal chain of command and no central technological haven for the characters to reconnoiter.
These missing elements were restored for the third season of "Picard," and it seems they were...

(To celebrate "Titanic" and its impending 25th-anniversary re-release, we've put together a week of explorations, inquires, and deep dives into James Cameron's box office-smashing disaster epic.)
"Titanic" is a truly monumental film, an epic the likes of which we rarely get anymore. James Cameron lead a team that crafted a touching and emotional romance for the ages, and a thrilling disaster movie with incredible effects both practical and digital. Few movies can give us the romantic splendor of Jack and Rose's first kiss, while simultaneously giving us the visual splendor and absolute terror of the shipwreck. This may have started as an excuse for Cameron to be able to see the shipwreck in person, but it is hard to argue against the sheer cinematic joy of the final film.

Take back everything you know about the person Loki becomes after "The Avengers" because his character development has just been reset. But that might not be a bad thing.
Loki Season 1 Episode 1 is what Marvel fans and, specifically, Loki fans have been waiting for since the Avengers traveled back to 2012 on "Avengers: Endgame," and Loki stole the Tesseract.
We have learned over the years that it's unbelievably difficult to keep the God of Mischief down, even when he has "died" multiple times. He has had an onslaught of second chances, so let's hope that he makes this one count.
After watching "Glorious Purpose," it's clear that Loki is yet again being pushed down the path of redemption.
We have been down this road many times before that it can start to feel repetitive, but this story seems different.
Mobius: I'm taking you someplace to talk.
Loki: I don't like to talk.

This article contains spoilers for Invincible episode 7.
Amazon’s animated adaptation of Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker’s comic Invincible was always a great idea. The property has just about everything that streaming services and their audiences are looking for currently: superheroes, ultraviolence, and jaw-dropping twists.
One big question facing the series, however, was how could one show possibly fit in all the story of the comic’s lengthy 144-issue run? Invincible episode 7, “We Need to Talk,” is the first season’s penultimate installment and it reveals how the show is set to approach this logistical challenge. With so many comic book issues of plot to get through, Invincible seems perfectly happy to accelerate through that plot as efficiently as possible. To that end, “We Need to Talk” features a truly staggering number of climactic moments.

Deutsche Telekom’s first major original, “Wild Republic,” is set to bow April 15 on the telco giant’s Ott service MagentaTV after production was postponed last year due to the ongoing pandemic.
The eight-part adventure series follows a group of young offenders who end up fending for themselves high in the Alps after a mysterious death disrupts the experiential educational program in which they are taking part.
Created by Jan Martin Scharf, Arne Nolting and Klaus Wolfertstetter, the series is produced by Lailaps Pictures, X Filme Creative Pool and Handwritten Pictures in co-production with Deutsche Telekom, Arte and Ard broadcasters Wdr, Swr and One.
“Wild Republic” was initially inspired by Erwin S. Strauss’ 1979 book “How to Start Your Own Country,” which explored the micronation movement of the 1960s, according to Lailaps CEO Nils Dünker. Eric Bouley, now managing partner at Handwritten Pictures, helped develop the original premise while working at Lailaps.

Editor’s note: Before he founded and became CEO of the Universal-based animation factory Illumination, Chris Meledandri was tasked with building an animation division at Fox. Early on, the president of Twentieth Century Fox Animation in 1998 acquired Blue Sky Studios for the studio. The Westchester, NY-based animation company might have started as an adjunct to Fox’s Hollywood animation operation, but that changed when Meledandri gave Blue Sky the room to grow, and the result was the multibillion-dollar Ice Age franchise. Meledandri, who would start Illumination and hatch another multibillion-dollar franchise in Despicable Me. Here, he laments the decision by Disney to shutter Blue Sky and celebrates its origins.
Hearing the sad news of the closing of Blue Sky Studios brings back the memories of our journey together. It was 1996 and I was running the animation division at Fox.

Following our enlightening Flash Gordon 40th anniversary interview with the film’s director, Mike Hodges, we got to have an in-depth conversation with author John Walsh. Titan Books published Walsh’s exhaustive coffee table book Flash Gordon: The Official Story of the Film last November. It was a labor of love for Walsh that delves into the making of the movie and celebrates its enduring appeal.
Walsh is a Trustee of the Ray and Diana Harryhausen Foundation, and was also behind the BBC’s critically acclaimed documentary series Sofa Surfers, which explored childhood homelessness, and the BAFTA-nominated film My Life: Karate Kids, which tackled issues of bullying among disabled children.
Den of Geek: You’ve been involved with preserving the legacy of the late Ray Harryhausen, and your first book through Titan was about some of his work. You first met him at film school in the 80s?
John Walsh: That’s right.

This Attack on Titan review contains spoilers.
Attack on Titan Season 4 Episode 6
“A life is a life”
Attack on Titan straddles many genres, but its premiere episode embraces horror tropes more than anything else. That first episode is scary, not just when the Titans first appear, but with the manner in which they terrorize Shiganshina District and devour so much of their population.
It’s a destabilizing and overwhelming experience and the beginning of “The War Hammer Titan” doesn’t only remember the anime’s horror roots, but it delivers carnage that’s even more frightening than what’s seen in Attack on Titan’s first episode. And Eren is the one that’s responsible. The immediate destruction that plays out from Eren’s Titan transformation is horrifying to witness. The fear of the community becomes so palpable that citizens trample over each other and claim more lives in an...

Plenty of anime series grow into phenomena over time and build a reputation for themselves, but Attack on Titan in particular has seen great success ever since its debut. The anime’s premise, where a community of resistance fighters live in a walled city to protect themselves from gigantic man-eating monsters known as Titans, is instantly addictive. It’s not uncommon for popular anime to lose momentum over time or struggle to stick their landings, but each season of Attack on Titan has only improved upon what’s come before it.
Attack on Titan gloriously defies expectations and it’s led to a final season that’s highly unconventional and explores the anime’s universe from a creative new vantage point. Excitement for Attack on Titan has never been higher now that its end is in sight and thankfully the series’ English dub has just become available to run in tandem with these final episodes.

The closest thing to sports running on the Freeform cable network since it came under Disney ownership in 2001 might be “Make It Or Break It,” a soapy series about the lives of young gymnasts hoping to get to the Olympics. On Sunday, Freeform will really be taking the field.
Viewers who tune to Freeform looking for “Hunger Games,” “Alice in Wonderland” or one of the movies Freeform typically shows each weekend will at 1 p.m. tomorrow find themselves part of a massive sports play. Freeform will show –of all things — an NFL Wild Card match between the Baltimore Ravens and Tennessee Titans. Nickelodeon and Telemundo, two other TV outlets known for things other than sports, will also try football on for size this weekend.
“It’s an experiment. We’ve never done it before,” says Sarah Lindman, senior vice president of content planning and strategy at Freeform, in an interview.

Our TV Fanatics Jack Ori and Christine Orlando are joined by Bradys from My Hourglass, a Days of Our Lives fan forum, to debate what Abe should do about Trask, Eli, and Lani, Jake and Chad's ongoing feud, Tripp balking at a DNA test, Kristian Alfonso's last scenes, and more!
Kristen will be sentenced for stabbing Victor. Should Abe make sure that Melinda faces the consequences of blackmailing Eli to get Kristen's confession?
Bradys: I think so. Melinda works for Abe, and she's using the power of her job to blackmail Eli, so Abe should make her pay for that. It can also happen that Lani goes to prison, being the daughter of Abe and unborn twins.
Jack: Abe absolutely should.

Fans got a real treat in this past week’s Star Trek: Lower Decks finale as the episode featured two unexpected cameos, as Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis reprised their roles as Riker and Deanna Troi in the last installment of the animated series’ debut run. And with season 2 on the way, we’ve now been promised that Riker’s role will continue when the show returns next year.
EP Mike McMahan was happy to confirm to Variety that Frakes will be back in season 2 as Riker. The character will be sticking around as series regular Brad Boimler has transferred to the U.S.S. Titan, which Riker took command of after leaving the Enterprise, so we’ll definitely be getting more of their dynamic.
“Yep. We’ll see the Titan next season because Boimler is off the Cerritos, and we’ll be seeing Capt. Riker again as well,” McMahan said.

Titan, which Riker took command of after leaving the Enterprise, so we’ll definitely be getting more of their dynamic.

After 10 irreverent, often wildly weird episodes, “Star Trek: Lower Decks” concluded its inaugural season as the first animated “Trek” series in 47 years with two striking salutes to “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”
(Warning: The rest of this story contains spoilers.)
The first “Tng” callback: The crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos run afoul of the Pakleds, a dimwitted alien species that have grown alarmingly lethal since we last saw them on the Season 2 “Tng” episode “Samaritan Snare.” Ne’er-do-well ensign Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsom) and by-the-book ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) have to team up with Mariner’s hard-charging mother, Capt. Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis), to defeat the Pakleds.
The second “Tng” callback: Just when it seems like the Cerritos has escaped, three more Pakled ships arrive and threaten to destroy the ship — until the U.S.S. Titan, led by Capt. Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) swoops in to save them.

The McU has released four Avengers movies thus far, but the team’s name only starts to make sense after Infinity War and during the events of Endgame.
In Captain Marvel, we learned that Nick Fury came up with the name for the Avengers Initiative through Carol Danvers’ call sign when she was in the Navy. As far as explanations go, that was a neat twist, but Earth’s Mightiest Heroes didn’t really do a whole lot of avenging before the events of Endgame.
When you think about it, the first movie revolved around Loki’s invasion of Earth through the Chitauri and when the God of Mischief wounds Agent Coulson, Fury uses this as a means to motivate the disgruntled band of heroes. But the main reason for them teaming up hardly had anything to do with avenging the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. In the sequel,...

Josh Brolin recently discussed playing Cable in Deadpool 2 and compared the experience to a “business transaction” unlike his time as the McU’s Thanos.
Cable was a welcome and well-received addition to the franchise, but now that Disney owns the rights to X-Men and the Regenerating Degenerate is basically a part of the McU, the future of the series, and Brolin’s character, in particular, remain in an ambiguous developmental state. Of course, a report that surfaced a couple of months ago all but suggested that the actor is in talks to return in a potential threequel and made it pretty clear that they want to keep Brolin around as part of Wade’s infamous X-Force.
Which certainly makes sense, as the two of them together make for a legendary duo, one ripe with narrative opportunities to explore. Besides, fans absolutely loved Brolin and his portrayal of Cable in the second film,...

Fans of the new seasons of Doctor Who will be familiar with the Doctor’s use of “timey-wimey,” first thrown out by David Tennant in the episode “Blink” to explain the not-always-consistent rules of time travel. Matt Smith’s Doctor also employed it in “The Day of the Doctor,” while the phrase has become a kind of sci-fi shorthand for situations where clear information isn’t present. However, it seems that the expression has its origins back in classic Who. Well, sort of, anyway.
According to ScreenRant, a 2017 Titan Comic miniseries focused on the Third Doctor places “timey-wimey” in that era of the Time Lord’s adventures. More specifically, writer Paul Cornell has it being coined by companion Jo Grant, who begins to use it to try to get her head around “The Three Doctors” and its use of multiple versions of the Doctor. At this point, Jon Pertwee’s...

Introduced alongside existing keywords such as Landfall and Kicker, Magic: The Gathering‘s latest expansion, Zendikar Rising, also brought us two brand new mechanics in the form of Modal Double-Face Card Cards (MDFCs) and Party, but there was almost a third to go along with them. On the latest episode of Good Morning Magic, Wizards of the Coast’s Gavin Verhey discussed various aspects of the design process behind cards introduced with the final third of Magic‘s 2020 block, including how members of the team had originally intended for one called Titan to make it in.
In terms of lore, Verhey explains how the keyword was created as a means to represent the remnants of the Eldrazi’s – an ancient alien race inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft – influence on the plane of Zendikar, specifically in reference to the three titans once trapped there: Emrakul, Ulamog and Kozilek. Similarly to Kicker,...

As the old saying goes, nobody ever really stays dead in comic books or comic book movies apart from Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben and Batman’s parents, so despite being killed at both the start and end of Avengers: Endgame, speculation has persisted about a potential return to the screen for Thanos.
The Mad Titan loomed large for years as the Infinity Saga’s end-of-level boss, and justified his status as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s greatest threat by wiping out half of all life in existence. You’d think that Thanos’ arc had been wrapped up pretty definitively, but there’ve nonetheless been constant rumors about Josh Brolin once again donning the mo-cap suit.
Given his ties to the title characters, a cameo in The Eternals can’t definitively be ruled out, while a prequel series on Disney Plus has also been mentioned as a possibility, along with flashbacks...

Many anime series have become phenomena that have relevance beyond the anime community. Attack on Titan is a special example thanks to a passionate audience that has stuck with the changing characters through the apocalyptic body horror war drama. Three seasons of incredible storytelling have played out over the course of seven years and the series is finally coming to an end with its fourth season.
There was a lot of love for Attack on Titan coming out of FunimationCon 2020, the anime company’s first “virtual convention.” Beyond the already released teaser trailer for Attack on Titan Season 4, Funimation had no additional details about the progress or release of these final episodes. This news isn’t exactly surprising for fans of the series, but what did come as a shock is the announcement of a new compilation film, Attack on Titan: -Chronicle- which will be released later this year.

At its core, Star Wars: Squadrons might be all about letting fans of the franchise experience the thrill of piloting an X-Wing or Tie Fighter from the comfort of their own home, but that certainly doesn’t mean EA Motive has any intention of skipping on story content. Quite the opposite, in fact. The developer’s budget-priced space sim has been confirmed to come bundled with a full-sized campaign when it ships later this year which aims to tell a story of two halves.
Unlike its spiritual predecessor, Squadrons‘ single-player component will have budding star pilots experience Star Wars‘ central conflict from both sides of the spectrum and thanks to today’s new information, we now have a clearer idea of each faction’s position in the Galaxy Far, Far Away, following the death of Emperor Palpatine. Hong Kong crime thriller, “Project Gutenberg” held its lead to win a second weekend at the Chinese box office. However, overall numbers remain weak and Hollywood is on the sidelines.
Starring Aaron Kwok and Chow Yun-fat, “Gutenberg” earned $20.6 million in its third weekend of release, according to data from Ent Group. That was down 45% on its previous winning weekend, and lifted its score to $135 million after 15 days of release.
Drama, “Lost, Found” improved on its opening weekend and climbed one place to second position. It earned $7.97 million and has a cumulative of $22.0 million after 10 days in theaters.
Zhang Yimou’s “Shadow” incurred a 54% decline and slipped to third place. After 15 days of distribution it has accumulated $80.1 million.
Newly-released Indian comedy drama “Hichki” (aka “Hiccup”) earned $4.20 million for fourth place. Starring Rani Mukherji as a woman with Tourette’s Syndrome, the film was released in India and diaspora territories in March this year.

To judge by Matthew Heineman’s occasionally clumsy but thoroughly harrowing biopic, renowned war reporter Marie Colvin was only afraid of two things: Dying young, and growing old. It’s a dilemma that would bind the American ex-pat to her job until the day she lost her life while covering the Syrian Civil War. For “Cartel Land” director Heineman — a notable documentary filmmaker whose recent “City of Ghosts” chronicled the ongoing atrocities committed against the people of Raqqa — Colvin’s plight offers a natural way in to the world of narrative storytelling (and the excuse to restage a half-dozen of the bloodiest modern conflicts that predated his career).
But there’s nothing opportunistic about “A Private War.” Watching the film scramble towards its inevitable conclusion, one gets the sense that Heineman sees Colvin as a kindred spirit. And while even he struggles to make sense of how she lived — or...

Universal offloaded this glossy sci-fi tale to the streaming platform and, despite a script from the writer of Arrival, it’s easy to see why
If we couldn’t safely presume Netflix is gathering data about our collective viewing habits to develop optimally profitable programming, the streaming site’s full-court press into science-fiction would seem a bit incongruous, or at least curious. In just the last year, Netflix has either produced or acquired Okja, Annihilation (for non-us audiences), Mute, The Titan, What Happened to Monday, Anon, How It Ends and The Cloverfield Paradox, and together those films have run the whole gamut from great to gratuitously bad.

Director Ben Young made a name for himself in the indie film world with his grisly psychological horror-thriller “Hounds of Love,” and now he’s taking a similar psychodrama approach and applying it to the science-fiction drama. Young is behind the camera for “Extinction,” the latest science-fiction offering from Netflix. The movie looks to give Mvp supporting actor Michael Peña a lead role worthy of his skills.
The official synopsis from Netflix reads: “A working class father of the future faces recurring dreams of destruction by an unknown force. When his unwanted nightmares begin to affect his relationship with his family, he soon realizes they may be the key to a horrible reality, as a relentless alien attack begins to destroy the Earth. As the invaders’ assault progresses, he is forced to find both the strength to protect his family and an understanding of who he truly is.”

Earth being screwed is hardly a fresh notion. We hear this sentiment on the news daily (albeit not in those very words) and in our heads every time we read what some idiot has done/posted on social media to attain viral fame. However, the set up for this new Netflix original film (which received a small cinema release here in the UK) suggests that we have run the world dry of resources and need to make home elsewhere…again, not an entirely fresh idea but one with a lot of potential all the same for filmmakers wanting to make a statement. Sadly The Titan is likely to do the opposite and fade from memory very soon after viewing it.
Set a few decades ahead of where we are now, the film’s DNA strands are filled in with influences as wide as Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, Vincenzo Natali’s Splice,...

This could be a really fun match up. THR is reporting that John Cena will join Jackie Chan in an upcoming action thriller to be directed by Need For Speed's Scott Waugh. Cena is reportedly replacing Sylvester Stallone who was slated for the role. Under the working title of Project X, Chan is playing the role of a security contractor who is called to the Middle East to extract workers from the Chinese-run oil refinery when it comes under attack. He teams up with an American and former Marine, played by Cena, when he learns that the attackers intend to steal a fortune in oil. Arash Amel (Erased and The Titan) wrote the screenplay. From the description above it sounds like it has borrowed elements...

When it comes to attracting foreign shoots in Spain, the motto could well be: “It’s the tax breaks, stupid.”
Of course, Spain has long been a foreign shoot locale: Think Samuel Bronston’s ’60s epics such as “El Cid.” International movies have always sought stunning locations, Mediterranean climate and low-cost labor. Since 2015, however, Spain has offered tax rebates for international shoots of up to 20%; 40% in the Canary Islands.
Tax credits are available to Spanish shoots and co-productions, reaching 25% in the Peninsula, 45% in the Canaries. Also, Navarre is dangling a 35% tax credit for local and international productions.
Three years after their launch, the rebates are having a huge impact on the sector: As a shooting locale, the country has never been more active in the past half century.
Benefits attract a wide range of projects. The biggest, among TV dramas, is “Game of Thrones,” which first lensed part of Season...
