Talk about a nail-biter! Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts from major media outlets are almost evenly divided between “Bad Education” and “El Camino” when it comes to Best TV Movie. All 29 Emmyologists believe both programs will earn nominations on July 28, so that’s no help. But when it comes to the winner, 13 pick the HBO telefilm about a true-to-life high school scandal while 12 choose the Netflix spin-off about a fan-favorite “Breaking Bad” character. The other four Experts predict “American Son,” Netflix’s adaptation of the Broadway play.

If you're looking for something new to watch this weekend, you're in luck as indie hit Camino has landed on Amazon Prime for your viewing pleasure!
Far and away, the best part of the modern state of the various streaming services is the access to so many indie films that would otherwise be impossible to check out. I'm really happy to tell you about one that arrived on Amazon Prime today: Camino. Originally launched in 2016 (after a successful KickStarter campaign), the dark comedy went on to rack up a handful of festival awards and now you can check it out for yourself.
Two underage slackers steal a cooler hoping to score some booze, but instead wind up with two human kidneys in this dark comedy film.

Dapper as usual in a tartan-print suit, Paul Feig entered the Scottish-themed Tam O’Shanter’s in Hollywood's Los Feliz neighborhood Tuesday evening to a dim room full of bright women.
The Ghostbusters director volunteered his Tuesday night to mentor eight women in the film industry, each hailing from a different discipline. The woman are members of the non-profit Cinefemme – a group of key creatives that work to connect female filmmakers and foster opportunities to greenlight their films.

Just a quick head-up: For those of you in the Los Angeles area, next weekend, April 22-24, marks the occasion for the second annual Artemis Women in Action Film Festival, playing at the newly refurbished Ahrya Fine Arts Theater in Beverly Hills. This festival, a labor of love project from athlete-actress Melanie Wise and writer-producers Sean Newcombe and Zack Baldwin, highlights the cinematic contributions of women in movies, in the stunt field as well as actresses in the realm of action cinema, and also highlights real-life women who have made significant, pioneering contributions to the furthering of women in sports and other traditionally male-dominated arenas.
Wise, an actress, athlete, aspiring filmmaker and one of the founding members of Artemis Motion Pictures, the group behind the festival, remembers her days auditioning for countless roles in TV and movies that amounted essentially to helpless women in peril. But being six feet tall herself,...

For those of you genre fans out there always on the lookout for interesting horror and sci-fi films to enjoy from the comfort of your own home, March’s VOD selections feature several great indie movies that should make for some entertaining viewings this month.
Ava’s Possessions, a film I really dug out of last year’s SXSW Film Festival, is finally making its way onto VOD this Friday and Emelie, the babysitter thriller from Dark Sky Films, is also getting a digital release that day. Other titles arriving on VOD in early March include The Wave, Road Games and Camino.
The month’s VOD titles are being capped off by a film that I’ve been excited to see for some time, Baskin, which is being released by IFC Midnight on March 25th. Other notable VOD titles for March include Dudes & Dragons, You’re Killing Me, A Haunting...

Hey creeps, as ya know I gave my two cents on the action adventure romp (with strong horror biz roots) Camino a few columns back (click here if the use of a search function is too much for ya). Anyway, I’m bringin’ this whole thing up because none other than that films die-rector Josh C. Waller just strolled into the Crypt o’ Xiii!
Famous Monsters. Welcome to my humble hovel Josh! How did Camino come about, and were there any ass-paining elements to the shoot?
Josh C Waller. The original idea came about while shooting The Boy in Colombia, but the project itself came together as a result of Daniel [Noah] and I having a last-minute gap in our production schedule and needing to fill that gap. The challenges that faced us aren’t necessarily ones unique to our film. They were the same types of obstacles that all independent filmmakers face.

Many movies spend years toiling away in development hell, struggling to get off the ground. There's a million different reasons for it. Money falls through, actors fall through, schedules get complicated, genres rise and fall in popularity. It's just a fact of the industry that projects often sit around for years on end before ever seeing the light of day. That's not what happened to Camino, a new thriller on VOD and iTunes this week. Writer Daniel Noah and director Josh C. Waller found themselves in the opposite of development hell. All of the puzzle pieces it takes to get a movie off of the ground miraculously seemed to align themselves, they were just missing one thing: a script. Noah hammered one out in just a matter of days and then a few weeks later they...

Nina Forever: Relationships are complicated, and even when you think you’ve moved on past a former lover, you still carry traces of that person’s influence with you for a while. That’s the theme at the heart of Nina Forever, the darkly comedic feature film debut from Ben and Chris Blaine that follows new couple Holly (Abigail Hardingham) and Rob (Cian Barry) as they contend with the return of Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy), Rob’s former girlfriend who was killed during a car accident and decides to pop up during their first time having sex. And that’s only the beginning of the awkwardness that continues to build between the trio throughout Nina Forever.
What I really enjoyed about Nina Forever was the approach that the Blaine Brothers take in tackling their complicated ideas; there are no easy answers here and the way the filmmakers handle topics like obsession,...

Josh Waller's Camino premiered last September in front of a packed theatre -- or actually, three of them simultaneously at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. Starring Zoe Bell, Nacho Vigalondo, and Francisco Barriero, Camino posits Bell as an award-winning photojournalist who gets pulled into a job in Colombia photographing freedom fighters. To put it lightly, problems arise when she captures something on film she's not supposed to see, and then she must fight for her life as she's pursued throughout the jungle. However, Camino isn't just an action film, and Bell's character isn't just chased by bloodthirsty men and women. There are also the memories of her late husband, which help to keep her from giving up when she's been beaten to a green and red pulp. The...

Stuntwoman turned leading lady Zoë Bell and filmmaker turned villain Nacho Vigalondo star in Camino, which our own Michele "Izzy" Galgana liked quite a bit, stating in part: "The dichotomy of loss and sorrow against action in this survivalist adventure is what allows the film to work; this isn't some Chuck Norris film (however entertaining those can be)." The setup is that Bell is "an award-winning photojournalist who gets pulled into a job in Colombia photographing freedom fighters." Vigalondo portrays their leader, a charismatic sort with a strong will who will let nothing stop him from accomplishing his own goals. We have an exclusive clip from early in the film, focusing on a more intimate moment involving Ms. Bell. It's a key moment that will...

It has been quite some time since we first wrote about Kevin Hamedani's short film project In Her Place. Back then it was under a different title, Prince Ali, but most notable of all was that Hamedani and his writer Max Borenstein had earned their chops in genre film and were now turning completely around for this short dramatic piece. Starring Sheila Vand (Argo, A Girl Walks Home At Night, Camino and the upcoming Whiskey Tango Foxtrot), the short film takes a close look at Persian culture. With themes of family, honor and tradition, perhaps it spoke a bit too truthfully about life in Iran as the authorities sought to confiscate the filmmakers' footage. But they made it out and the short has completed its festival run. You...

Stunt performer extraordinaire and frequent Quentin Tarantino collaborator Zoe Bell takes the lead in Camino, the latest from McCanick director Josh C Waller with Timecrimes and Open Windows helmer Nacho Vigalondo chewing up scenery in the villain role. Set in 1985, war photographer Avery Taggert (Zoë Bell) has built a solid career with her stark and honest imagery, all the while remaining emotionally distant from her subjects. When she embeds in the jungles of Colombia with a squad of missionaries led by a beloved and charismatic Spaniard known as "El Guero" (Nacho Vigalondo), she finds herself in the middle of a conflict as violent as any she's photographed. One night, she happens upon El Guero committing a heinous atrocity, capturing the vile act on film,...

Zoe Bell has proven that she’s up to the challenge of getting her hands dirty in films like Raze, Bitch Slap, and her career igniting role in Death Proof. Her physicality is without question. She more than holds her own in Camino as she rumbles in the jungle with a bunch of Columbian thugs. There’s a stark realism to her maneuvers, punches, and kicks, but the stunt woman turned actress from New Zealand doesn’t quite have the strength to carry this 70’s and 80’s throwback action film. Camino suffers from a case of being both monotonous and feeling like a film you’ve seen done better before.
Avery Taggert (Zoe Bell) is an award-winning photojournalist. Her new assignment is to venture into the jungles of Colombia and document a group of religious freedom fighters led by Fantastic Fest mainstay and all-around wild man Nacho Vigalondo – an inspired bit of casting.

Life’s inevitable spiral towards death – it’s something we’re all tragically caught in. We have an unknown amount of time on this planet, and how we use said time is what defines us. That, in essence, is the story of Camino, Josh C. Waller’s latest collaboration with stunt-actress and perennial badass, Zoë Bell. It’s the thought that an honorable death is a life not wasted, no matter how the subject of that mentality might feel. Of course, that’s not exactly how we do things here in America, and as you can infer from the above picture, Waller takes us to a war-torn Colombian jungle in order to assess the worth of a human life – something Bell does herself when thrust into a frantic fight for survival.

Fresh from its world premiere at Fantastic Fest yesterday Twitch is happy to present the (typically) fantastic Jay Shaw created poster art for Josh Waller's Camino, with Zoe Bell and Nacho Vigalondo. Here's how I pitched the film in the festival guide: Zoe Bell - best known for her long running collaborations with Quentin Tarantino - is Avery Taggert, an acclaimed photojournalist looking to put some distance between herself and her own dark history when she takes a job in the remote jungles of Colombia. Her subject? A revolutionary group - led by Timecrimes helmer Nacho Vigalondo - with their own hidden agenda. It should be a fairly straightforward job, but when Taggert snaps a photo of something she wasn't meant to see, things go...
