Tickets for Robert Eggers' highly-anticipated horror remake, Nosferatu, go on sale tomorrow (we might also get a final trailer), and Focus Features (via FearHQ.com) has now released a foreboding first clip from the movie.
Though it's just under 30 seconds long, this sneak peek gives us some idea of the creeping sense of dread cinemagoers can expect to feel when they sit down to watch the film this Christmas.
The clip finds a desperate Ellen Sutter (Lily-Rose Depp) begging her Guardian Angel to come and protect her from the evil forces that have entered her life. Unfortunately, Ellen's prayers are answered by a skeletal hand gripping her by the throat.
Check out the clip at the link below, along with a new IMAX poster.

It has already been said plenty of times, even since Cannes, but this is a really weird year for Best Picture. Academy rules have changed to make it so there will be 10 nominees no matter what, but there are only five to seven films that feel like shoo-ins for an Oscar nomination in the category.

We all know that making it in Hollywood takes a lot of luck. But it’s also about connections – and if that connection used to change your diaper (or hire a live-in nanny to…), all the better. And Lily-Rose Depp – the daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis – is all too aware of the label of “nepo baby.” But with Nosferatu on its way to theaters and Depp earning unanimous praise for her performance, she’s doing about as well as anyone to shut the critics up.
Even though Lily-Rose Depp is likely to earn an Oscar nomination for playing the object of Count Orlok’s desire, she knows that there is still a struggle in being the daughter of one of the world’s most famous actors. Speaking with Vanity Fair, she spoke of the pressure and always being rooted against. “Somebody asked me the other day what was...

Peacock announced this morning that its psychological horror thriller Speak No Evil, starring James McAvoy, will begin streaming exclusively on the platform on December 6.
The film drew quite positive reviews in its September release — no easy feat for an English-language remake of a recent, highly lauded international title — and grossed over $76 million worldwide. Hailing from Blumhouse and Universal Pictures, it adapts Christian Tafdrup’s Danish pic of the same name, released in 2022.
The story follows Americans Ben (Scoot McNairy) and Louise (Mackenzie Davis), who after befriending a British couple with a mute son, accept an unusual invitation to bring their daughter for a weekend at an idyllic country estate. Yet when they discover their hosts are hiding sinister motives, Ben and Louise fear their family may be pawns in a disturbing plot. Led by McAvoy as a charismatic man masking unspeakable darkness, a dream holiday warps into an unnerving nightmare.

Hollywood has criminally underutilized vampires in recent years. Though these past two years have somewhat rectified that with The Last Voyage of the Demeter and the upcoming Nosferatu remake, there was a time – not so long ago – when all we knew about Hollywood vampires was that they sparkled and fell in love with […]

Lily-Rose Depp doesn’t care if people want to see her fail because she’s out to “prove people wrong.”
The actress, the daughter of actor-musician Johnny Depp and French model-actress-singer Vanessa Paradis, recently opened up to Vanity Fair about working to find her own identity in Hollywood, despite critics.
“I feel like people have been ready to see me fail, in a way, since I was a kid,” she says. “That has made me only want to work harder and prove people wrong. Not in a vindictive way at all, but just in a sense of, like, fuel to my fire. I do want to prove that I’m a hard worker and I’m not here for anything else but to work hard. But Rob [Eggers, Nosferatu director] was one of my bucket list directors. I didn’t think I would get to work with him so soon, so early in my career.

Last month saw streaming platforms settle into their annual cozy season with new fall TV shows and autumn film favorites. This December, Hulu and Disney+ are hunkering down with premieres for several animated TV series, a solid selection of holiday fare, and feel-good movies both old and new.
Disney+ will bring its classic characters together for “Mickey and the Very Many Christmases” as well as “Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade.” It will also premiere “The Simpsons Christmas Double Episode,” “Doctor Who: Joy to the World,” and “CMA Country Christmas” to honor the season. Top non-holiday picks include the return of “Marvel Animation’s What If…?” (kicking off December 22 with new episodes premiering daily for eight days), “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” and “Elton John: Never Too Late.”
Over at Hulu, the divisive new horror flick “Cuckoo” starring Hunter Schafer is set to stream alongside a robust catalogue of various other movies.

Having first watched F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent horror classic Nosferatu: A Symphony Of Horror as a child, and then directed an amateur stage version in school aged just 17, it would be fair to say that for Robert Eggers, his own cinematic take on the quintessential vampiric chiller has been a long time coming. But whilst much of the focus in the build-up to The Witch director’s Nosferatu has been on its old-school Gothic vibe, its all-star cast (Lily-Rose Depp! Bill Skarsgård! Nicholas Hoult!), and what sounds like another legendarily difficult Eggers shoot, few could’ve guessed his movie’s secret weapon — a Tik-Tokking Romanian granny!
As Eggers reveals to Empire in our Ultimate 2025 Preview issue, one of the most challenging sequences of the movie to shoot was the one in which Nicholas Hoult’s estate agent Thomas Hutter arrives in a rural Transylvanian village en route to Count Orlok...

The first social media reactions for Robert Eggers' Nosferatu promised a creepy, gory and surprisingly sexy adaptation of the classic vampire tale, and this is reflected in the MPA's official rating.
Nosferatu has been rated R for “Bloody violent content, graphic nudity and some sexual content.”
Another press screening for the movie recently took place, and you can check out some new reactions below.
Bill Skarsgård genuinely is unrecognizable as Count Orlok in #Nosferatu. A transformative role, whose likeness is more obscured than ever by hair/ makeup/ prosthetics, vocal work & imposing physicality. Terrific stuff. Movie magic!

The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here) is set to reach theatres on Wednesday, December 25th – and with that date just one month away, the Motion Picture Association ratings board has revealed that they’ve given the film an R rating. Nosferatu earned that rating with its bloody violent content, graphic nudity, and some sexual content.
An unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the original Nosferatu has the following synopsis: In this highly influential silent horror film, the mysterious Count Orlok (Max Schreck) summons Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) to his remote Transylvanian castle in the mountains. The eerie Orlok seeks to buy a house near Hutter and his wife, Ellen (Greta Schroeder). If you had any doubt that the awards season was in full swing, Sunday night’s 15th Annual Governors Awards ceremony answered it.
If you are, or in any way think you might have a shot at an Oscar nomination this year, and were in Los Angeles, it is most likely I might have run into you last night at Ovation’s Ray Dolby Ballroom where this jam packed ceremony saluting this year’s honorary Oscar recipients took place. In fact, just the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ PR team’s tip sheet was two pages of 207 single spaced names who were expected to attend (and by my count did) show up, not just to honor the deserving winners of the evening, but also perhaps to be in this place which is packed with Oscar voters who might be reminded to see your movie, if they haven’t done so already.

The 15th annual Academy Governors Awards on Sunday night brought tears and laughs to the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood, as usual packed with Oscar hopefuls and AMPAS voters as the awards season gets into full swing.
With preparations for the March 2 Oscars (ABC) underway with two of last year’s executive producers (Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan) and edgy new host Conan O’Brien, the Governors Awards gave out five honorary Oscars to their second casting director, New York veteran Juliet Taylor (Lynn Stalmaster was the first), presented by Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”) who took her shoes off to meet the mic.
Other honorees included “James Bond” producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, presented by bearded former Bond Daniel Craig (“Queer”); writer/director and humanitarian Richard Curtis, presented by an hilarious Hugh Grant (“Heretic”); and the late, great Quincy Jones, presented by a sincere Jamie Foxx.

Hugh Grant called an Honorary Oscar winner an a–hole, studios spent big money to show off all their awards contenders and a posthumous tribute to Quincy Jones left everybody buzzing at the Academy’s 15th annual Governors Awards on Sunday night in Hollywood, turning a fraught time in the movie business into a satisfying celebration – and, of course, a prime campaign opportunity for everyone hoping to attract the attention of Oscar voters.
While the Governors Awards, the annual event at which honorary Academy Awards are given out, has become a reliably grand combination of cinematic cclebration and campaign event, two factors conspired to cast a shadow over Sunday’s ceremony, which took place at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland.
The first was the fact that Jones was announced as a winner of the Honorary Oscar back in June, but died on Nov. 3, two weeks before he was to receive the award.

Who knew pop star Ariana Grande was an adept musical comedienne? That surprise discovery should land her an Oscar nomination for Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of the global hit musical “Wicked”, which will prove a box-office juggernaut. On that much “Screen Talk” co-hosts Ryan Lattanzio and Anne Thompson agree; but he hates the cheesy visuals and loves Jonathan Bailey’s charismatic supporting turn as the romantic interest of both witches-in-training, while Anne admires the music, well-produced by Marc Platt and delivered with gusto by Cynthia Erivo and Grande.
“Wicked” follows Steven Spielberg’s recent “West Side Story,” which earned seven nominations in 2022 and a win for another supporting discovery, Ariana DeBose. And Rob Marshall’s film version of Bob Fosse’s “Chicago” (2002) was also one of 10 musical Best Picture winners. But we agree they were executed with more visual and technical mastery.

In explaining montage, or ‘assembly’ as he liked to refer to it, Alfred Hitchcock once explained the Kuleshov Effect or, as Hitch called it, ‘pure cinematics’; the juxtaposition of imagery to create different ideas. In the same way, comparison and contrast of music and image have been used practically since the origins of film language to create additional meaning. What would the shower scene in Psycho be without Bernard Herrmann’s strings? Jaws wouldn’t be nearly as ominous sans John Williams’ iconic ‘da-dum…da-dum.’ In the same spirit, Silents Synced reimagines film score by pairing classic silent films with the music of contemporary artists. Specifically designed for independent movie theatres, the new event cinema series kicked off in the US with an appropriately released October pairing of the Radiohead albums Kid A and Amnesiac with F. W. Murnau’s 1922 symphony of horror,...

The Academy Awards are still months away but the best picture landscape is already taking shape. Some question marks remain — for example, both “Nosferatu” and the Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown” have yet to be widely seen. And the staying power of smaller indies like “A Real Pain” and “Nickel Boys” has yet to be tested. Critical attention could boost films like “I’m Still Here” and “Hard Truths.” And it’s been a great year for animation with films like “Inside Out 2” and “The Wild Robot” — can they break the bias into the lead race?
While we’ll have to wait a bit longer for answers, here’s a look at some of the films that are generating the most discussion to take home the top prize in March.

Johnny Depp is a great many things. A fine actor who gets into character every time, Depp found woldwide fame with the role of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Well, that fame won’t matter to him if he bags the iconic role that Robert Downey Jr. lobbied hard for him to get. Not MCU, but if the reports are true, Johnny Depp could become a part of Sherlock Holmes 3!

With a slew of excellent, critically acclaimed horror films in 2024, could awards bodies finally give them more consideration? A few thoughts.
Toni Collette in Hereditary. Jack Nicholson in The Shining. Elisabeth Moss in The Invisible Man. Mia Goth in Pearl. Christian Bale in American Psycho. Florence Pugh in Midsommar.
Horror films have long produced some fine, memorable performances, but they rarely tend to break through into the awards conversation. Or even if they’re talked about, they’re usually doomed to receive no love from the awards bodies themselves.
Why? Great question, and one that probably doesn’t have a simple answer. In general, horror films have been seen as trashy, low-brow forms of entertainment despite their long history of tackling social issues amid all the blood and guts. It’s only recently, with the rise of so-called “elevated horror” – anyone else hate that term? – that the genre’s reputation has started to slowly change.

The career trajectory of character actor extraordinaire Willem Dafoe is one of the more unusual among contemporary Hollywood stars. From his early days of being routinely cast as a heavy, Dafoe worked his way through the system thanks to the sheer force of his talent, finally being cast as leads, often portraying in detail such real-life figures as actor Max Schreck, artist Vincent Van Gogh and even Jesus Christ.
Among Dafoe’s early bad guy roles were as biker gang leaders in both Kathryn Bigelow‘s “The Loveless” and Walter Hill‘s “Streets of Fire.” But his performance as kindly Sgt. Elias in Oliver Stone‘s “Platoon” changed all that, resulting in his first Academy Award nomination. Three more Oscar nominations followed, and Dafoe has also earned three Golden Globe nominations and four noms from the Screen Actors Guild.

It’s November — a month where everyone still thinks they can win. Oscars, that is. And as usual, the campaign activity is thriving, and maybe this year the idea that anyone can win — or at least get nominated — is not that far-fetched. The lingering effects of the 2023 actors’ and writers’ strikes are still being felt, due to those productions that were halted and releases put on hold, and a more robust lineup of awards contenders has really failed to materialize because of those delays. 2025 is looking pretty good. 2024? Not so much.
This isn’t to say there aren’t several worthy contenders, but just about any pundit you talk to will tell you this is a weird year, without a single take-it-to-the-bank frontrunning contender emerging in this nascent race. It could be anyone’s ballgame. The excitement of 2023’s Barbenheimer contest that managed to ignite both the box office and...

Bram Stoker’s Dracula has given us some of the most visually stunning films in the horror genre. From the silent era’s unauthorized Nosferatu to at least the ‘90s with Francis Ford Coppola’s take, we’ve been spoiled with adaptations. Now, Robert Eggers and Bill Skarsgard are going to bring it to the screen once more, this time with Nosferatu. And both were well aware of the pressures in adapting such a famous, powerful story yet again.
Speaking with Vanity Fair, Bill Skarsgard – who, as perhaps the reigning scream king, seemed destined to star in Nosferatu – said, “Orlok is also Dracula. To me, in terms of iconic horror characters, the number one is Dracula/Nosferatu. It’s the most seminal work of literature in gothic horror for sure. I think it’s been adapted more than probably any other book. This story is so ingrained in our subconscious...

The marketing behind The Northman director Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu has made it clear that the inhuman visage of its central monster won’t be revealed until audiences arrive in theaters on Christmas Day. That’s all the more intriguing considering that descriptors like “erotic” and “sexualized” have been attached to Bill Skarsgård’s performance as Count Orlok, both in critical first reactions and from the cast.
Skarsgård even teased his character in an earlier chat with Esquire, saying: “He’s gross. But it is very sexualized. It’s playing with a sexual fetish about the power of the monster and what that appeal has to you. Hopefully you’ll get a little bit attracted by it and disgusted by your attraction at the same time.”
Of course, cinema’s history is filled with sexualized vampires that inspire lust, using it themselves to prey upon their victims. It’s an entirely...

There’s no other word for it: Star Wars series Andor was nothing short of revolutionary. The Rogue One prequel – depicting how Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor was drawn into the burgeoning Rebellion – reinvented the galaxy far, far away from the inside out. And yet it remained Star Wars through-and-through, delving deeper than ever before into the saga’s themes of antifascism, hard-won freedom, and the evils of Imperialism. Now, a Star Wars story like no other is about to go out with a bang – Andor Season 2 will complete Cassian’s rise, taking us straight into Rogue One with all the uncompromising flair that creator Tony Gilroy is known for. The revolution has just begun.
This month’s issue of Empire takes a world-exclusive deep-dive into the long-awaited return of Andor – speaking to Gilroy and his cast on what to expect from the time-hopping second and final season. Inside, we talk to Gilroy,...

Manga or anime, both have a unique way of capturing emotions and weaving them into unforgettable stories. Over the years, many iconic anime have given their own twist to Dracula’s story, but Sakamoto Shinichi’s latest #Drcl: Midnight Children manga takes it to new heights. Interestingly, the recent manga cover showcases some hidden references to the legendary pop star, Michael Jackson, that many fans couldn’t ignore.

Indeed, the manga is a beautiful and chilling retelling of Bram Stoker’s quintessential horror classic. Midnight Children reminds audiences several times throughout that it’s meant to be a story where gender, nationality, and social status are disregarded in the face of a common enemy. Following the manga’s huge success, the #Drcl Volume 5 cover pays tribute to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, reigniting fans’ dreams.

Robert Eggers has already made it clear that the Lily-Rose Depp you see onscreen in “Nosferatu” is all real: No CGI was used to enhance how physically and psychically mad she goes under the spell of demon-lover vampire Count Orlok (Bill Skårsgard).
But the writer/director revealed more details about her unhinged performance as Ellen Hutter in a Q&a for Academy members in New York over the weekend, moderated by “Tàr” and “Little Children” director Todd Field. Lily-Rose Depp, who already showed a willingness to stretch her bounds in terms of choreography on HBO’s glitteringly messy series maudit “The Idol,” helps turn this 19th century gothic “Nosferatu” into a story of female possession — which, as Eggers pointed out, was central to F.W. Murnau’s original film and Werner Herzog’s 1979 take, “Nosferatu the Vampyre,” which featured “Possession” star Isabelle Adjani (yet another movie this one will inevitably draw...

The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here) is set to reach theatres on Wednesday, December 25th – and while there has been a lot of talk about the transformation Bill Skarsgard (It) underwent to play the title character (Skarsgard himself has said that playing Nosferatu / Count Orlok was like “conjuring pure evil. It took a while for me to shake off the demon that had been conjured inside of me. … I do not think people are gonna recognize me in it.“), it has been confirmed that we won’t be seeing a good shot of the dead Transylvanian nobleman until the movie reaches the big screen.
An unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the original Nosferatu has the following synopsis: In this highly influential silent horror film, the mysterious Count Orlok (Max Schreck) summons Thomas Hutter...

We are just about a month and a half away from Christmas, which means we’re a month and a half away from the release of director Robert Eggers’ (The Witch, The Lighthouse) new movie Nosferatu, a fresh take on the classic horror movie from Focus Features.
Bill Skarsgård is playing Nosferatu/Count Orlok in the film, whose appearance has been hidden from the film’s marketing up to this point. And a new preview piece from Entertainment Weekly today suggests that will remain the case until the day of December 25, 2024.
According to the outlet, “Only when audiences arrive in theaters on premiere day this Christmas will the general public see the results of the full hair, make-up, and prosthetics.”
Entertainment Weekly also notes that the hiding of Nicolas Cage’s look in Longlegs by Neon’s marketing campaign “only confirmed that this was the right decision” for Nosferatu.

“Nosferatu” screened for critics and Academy members over the past week to rave first reactions. Mind you that first-reactions fever can lead to overpraise that sours into less enthusiastic reviews. Take “Gladiator II,” which sent first-look viewers (which also included AMPAS and press) dancing into the streets a couple of weeks ago, but reviews that broke today (including IndieWire’s own) were more muted in their praise.
On this week’s edition of IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” podcast, co-hosts Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio are unified in their praise of “Nosferatu,” which Focus Features opens as surely R-rated counter-programming on Christmas Day. Anne points out that Academy voters are bound to be seduced by the film’s serious attention to 19th century period detail and vernacular. Robert Eggers puts another woman (Lily-Rose Depp) under assault in his sexy and frightening take on “Nosferatu.” The “Northman” and “The Witch” director first saw F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent vampire film when he was nine years old on a scratchy old VHS tape off a 16mm print, as he told moderator Guillermo del Toro at a DGA screening packed with Academy members and critics on Thursday night. Directors John Landis, Richard Kelly, and J.C. Chandor were among the attendees chatting up Eggers afterward.
“It had a magical quality,” said Eggers of the tape. “It stayed with me.” He went on to play Count Orlok in his own high school play of “Nosferatu,” and his background as a stage and production designer before becoming a feature director is on full display here.

Some lucky critics got to see an early screening of Robert Eggers' take on the classic vampire tale "Nosferatu" — and they all say it freaking rules.
The film, which stars Bill Skårsgard as the titular bloodsucker alongside Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, and Willem Dafoe (among many others), is already earning raves from the fortunate folks who got to see it first. "'Nosferatu:' strangely comforting this week to watch a film that feels conjured from the darkest depths of pure evil," critic Jordan Raup wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). "Eggers' most assured work, one in which you can feel his obsessions flow through every nocturnal frame. Lily Rose-Depp and Bill Skarsgard are out of this world." Carlos Aguilar agreed, saying, "After a few months I can finally share I loved ['Nosferatu']. It further crystallizes Eggers' exploration of evil as an elemental force, as inherent to existence as desire,...

Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu” is creeping nearer.
The latest version of the classic 1922 silent film by F.W. Murnau, which was famously remade in 1979 by Werner Herzog, had splashy screenings in New York and Los Angeles (where Guillermo del Toro moderated a post-screening Q&a with Eggers) on Thursday. And the response was rapturous, with people hailing the movie’s production design, cinematography and fastidious attention to detail, all hallmarks of previous Eggers movies like “The Witch,” “The Lighthouse” and “The Northman.”
This new “Nosferatu” stars Bill Skarsgård as the vampire, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin and Willem Dafoe.
Rodrigo Perez, editor in chief of The Playlist, said the film was “a masterful, unnerving, spine-tingling gothic horror of the highest order, Robert Eggers’ best film.” He also singled out Rose-Depp’s performance, a common refrain among those who saw the movie yesterday.

On Thursday night, Focus Features held the first public screening of Robert Eggers’ highly anticipated horror movie “Nosferatu” for guild members and press, followed by a Q&a between the director and Guillermo del Toro, a kindred filmmaking spirit. Deadline reports that they revealed some interesting behind-the-scenes tidbits about making the film, which is a remake of the 1922 silent German Expressionist horror film.
The gnarliest bit of trivia is that “Nosferatu” has a “Willard”-esque number of rats in it. “There’s 5,000 real rats,” Eggers said. “So basically if there’s rats in the foreground, they’re real, and then they thin out and become CG rats in the background. And they were well-trained.” But not potty-trained: “I didn’t know that rats are incontinent, so the smell is insane,” he added.

For horror fans, Robert Eggers‘ “Nosferatu” remains the final most anticipated movie of 2024. And several questions abound before it arrives in theaters on Christmas Day. How will it stack up against F.W. Murnau‘s original and subsequent remakes? Will Eggers rebound critically and commercially after the meek box office run of “The Northman“? And is there an eager audience for an old-school gothic period-piece in the mid-2020s?

Robert Eggers’ gothic tale of obsession “Nosferatu” had its first screenings in New York City and Los Angeles on Thursday, November 7, including an L.A. Academy screening moderated by Guillermo del Toro. Early reactions are in for the 19th-century period piece horror about the title vampire’s (Bill Skarsgård) obsession with a woman named Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp). Nicholas Hoult plays her husband Thomas, sent to Transylvania to ink a real estate contract with Nosferatu, only to end up signing away his marriage and his wife’s soul. But is it not Ellen who was luring Nosferatu to her all along? The rest of the English-accented cast in the period-detailed gothic horror movie includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson.
On Threads, IndieWire’s Anne Thompson wrote, “Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is a period delight, a fantastic horror tale exquisitely mounted and efficiently told. It’s historically authentic with a strong English-accented cast.

You have such a beautiful neck…and as it seems, Robert Eggers’ latest, Nosferatu, is living its mark on audiences. That might feel like a pun, but this film might be contending for one of the best of the year.
With just three films to his name so far, Robert Eggers quickly solidified himself as one of the premiere horror directors out there — and one isn’t even close to being in that genre: The Northman. However, Eggers might be heading towards the Oscars stage with Nosferatu, as it is earning some serious praise early on. Check out some of the initial reactions from social media, starting off with our very own Jimmy O’s take:
Our own @jimmytotheo says @Nosferatu is a stunning work of gothic horror. Beautiful performances throughout, however Lily-Rose Depp is simply luminous and Bill Skarsgard brings terror to the screen yet wraps it all in a layered character.
