The filmmakers did not receive permission from Bruce Springsteen to use the song "Thunder Road" in the film. According to Jim Cummings, after its Sundance premiere he tried unsuccessfully for months to get in touch with Springsteen to license the song so the film could be posted online, before finally posting an open letter asking for permission. Springsteen eventually viewed the film and enjoyed it, and licensed the song for $1,000.
