The film's original, French title is a play on words, "Ce Qui Nous Lie" meaning "That Which Binds Us", with the word "Lie" also meaning lees, the sediment of wine during fermentation and aging. Additionally, the title references director Cédric Klapisch's successful early short film, Ce qui me meut (1989).

Director Cédric Klapisch started thinking about making a film set around winemaking in 2010, spent six months scouting locations in Burgundy and discussed his initial idea, centered on the relationship between a father in his seventies and a son in his forties, with actor Romain Duris. He however eventually decided to make Chinese Puzzle (2013) first.
First film directed by Cédric Klapisch not to feature actor Zinedine Soualem. The pair would reunite in Klapisch's next film, Someone, Somewhere (2019), which co-stars two of this film's leads, François Civil and Ana Girardot.
