It doesn’t seem like that long ago that Megan Fox was starring in the Transformers franchise, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Jennifer’s Body. Now she’s starring in Machine Gun Kelly videos and Till Death, a low-budget variation on Gerald’s Game. Hoping her taste in scripts was better than her taste in music I pressed play…
Emma (Megan Fox) is married to Mark who’s gone from prosecutor to sleazy defence attorney. How sleazy? He freely admits he’s happier making big money keeping scum like Bobby Ray, the man who mugged and nearly killed Emma out of jail than he was working hard to put them away. Innocent, guilty, who cares as long as they pay. Needless to say, it’s not the happiest of marriages.

New Indie
Emma Seligman’s impressive “Shiva Baby” (Utopia) premieres on Blu-ray this month, and it’s a blisteringly funny, character-based comedy about a young Danielle (played by Rachel Sennott) whose rootless life when she attends a shiva with her parents (Fred Melamed and Polly Draper), only to encounter the boyfriend who’s financially supporting her, his wife — whom Danielle didn’t know existed — and Danielle’s ex-girlfriend. It’s a full buffet of misunderstandings, awkward encounters, and scene-stealing character actors, with a cast that also includes Jackie Hoffman, Dianna Agron, and Molly Gordon.
Also available: A jaded clickbait reporter has an unforgettable encounter in the indie comedy “15 Things You Didn’t Know About Bigfoot” (Kino Lorber); over-the-hill kung fu disciples rouse themselves from mid-life torpor to avenge the death of their master in the martial-arts comedy “The Paper Tigers” (Well Go USA Entertainment).

About 4 or 5 years ago I had the pleasure of interviewing an up-and-coming director about his debut feature Leopard. A really low-budget independent Irish flick that had all the integrity and power of a Shane Meadows movie and showed us that Eoin Macken was well on his way to be more than just a leading man on American hospital drama The Night Shift. I was genuinely smitten with Leopard and thought it was a powerhouse story told with style, grace and intelligence. Macken was a director I was now aware of and would have to keep an eye on going forward. What would follow was a hell of a run on American hospital drama The Night Shift as Tc Callahan; and a role on the prematurely cancelled George R Martin show Nightflyers for Syfy.

Three young Dubliners find their post-graduation confusion worsened by a nearby tragedy in Here Are the Young Men, an adaptation of Rob Doyle’s debut novel directed by model-turned-actor Eoin Macken. Benefitting from a relatively high-profile cast (especially Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy, though she’s not the focus here), the picture has enough polish to draw a small audience. But once they’re watching, most viewers will be reminded of other, more ambitious accounts of youthful disillusionment and risk-taking, the best of which can make characters’ epiphanies seem like they haven’t already been had by generations of post-adolescents.

Mixing together the debauchery of Trainspotting with the youthful disaffection of Skins, director Eoin Macken’s film Here Are the Young Men, based on the 2014 novel by Rob Doyle, is a cynical look at three frustrated young men during the summer after they graduate from school, circa 2003. Taking its title from the Joy Division song “Decades,” Macken’s film is, in many ways, a throwback to the type of hyperkinetic malcontent portraits of youth behaving badly that cropped up in the early 2000s––A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Thirteen, Havoc, etc.––grafted onto Dublin. Featuring a trio of up-and-coming actors––Dean-Charles Chapman, Finn Cole, and Ferdia Walsh-Peelo––in addition to an underutilized Anya Taylor-Joy, Here Are the Young Men attempts to mine the depths of toxic masculinity, played out differently by the three boys, but the film often regresses back to a portrait of bacchanalian depravity without a clear...

"Boys, we're free!" Well Go USA has released an official trailer for an indie film from Ireland called Here Are the Young Men, adapted from the book of the same name. This premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh last year, and is arriving in the US this April. Dublin teenagers Matthew, nihilistic Rez, and the deranged Kearney, leave school to a social vacuum of drinking and drugs, falling into shocking acts of transgression. The trio must grapple with the most daunting challenge of their lives: facing their own inner demons. The struggle of being a crazy teenager and dealing with the ramifications of a party life. Starring Dean-Charles Chapman, Finn Cole, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Travis Fimmel, and Conleth Hill. It looks a bit like a modern Dublin remake of Trainspotting all about drugs and being young & wild & carefree. Against his father’s wishes, Savino takes off on an adventure of a lifetime and discovers that learning about life and living life are two very different things.
Arclight Films has taken the worldwide distribution rights to coming-of-age film Chasing Wonders, produced by South Australia’s Sla Films and the UK’s Met Film, launching sales at the virtual Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) this week.
Scripted by Judy Morris, the film was shot over five years across Australia and Spain and with a cast that includes Paz Vega, Edward James Olmos, Quim Gutierrez, Carmen Maura, Antonio de la Torre, Jessica Marais and newcomer Michael Crisafulli as the lead.
Due to make its world premiere at October’s Adelaide Film Festival, Chasing Wonders follows a 12 year old, whose sense of adventure and imagination runs wild, fueled by his maternal grandfather’s (Olmos) encouragement to journey to the magical Emu Plains. Against his father’s wishes, Savino takes off on an adventure of a lifetime and discovers that learning about life and living life are two very different things.

The Witch breakout star Anya Taylor-Joy, Dean-Charles Chapman (Game Of Thrones), Finn Cole (Peaky Blinders), and Ferdia Walsh-Peelo (Sing Street) have been tapped as the leads in Here Are The Young Men, a film adaptation based on Rob Doyle’s Irish novel of the same name. The pic is written and being directed by filmmaker Eoin C. Macken.
The film takes place in 2003 where, in one last summer of adolescence, an aimless teenager named Matthew (Chapman), is pulled into a world of nihilistic toxic masculinity by his charismatic friend Kearney (Cole). Matthew yearns after his childhood sweetheart Jen (Taylor-Joy), an independent girl on her own trajectory, whilst their precocious friend Rez (Walsh-Peelo), starts to succumb to paranoia.
Lola Petticrew and Conleth Hill are set to co-star in the feature, which begins shooting this month.
Producers are Tym Production’s Richard Bolger and Union Entertainment Group’s Noah Haeussner, with Edwina Casey co-producing.
