The documentary's filmmaker first discovered the outback hotel about fifteen years prior to the doc debuting. He was travelling through the country town and happened to be there at the time of a changeover between female temporary barmaid bartenders where two new ones were replacing two who were leaving after their three month tenure.
Over ninety hours of footage was shot for this documentary.
The documentary was filmed during 2012 but was not first released until 2016.
The real life ''Canman'' / ''Can Man'' old timer character featured in this film passed away shortly after filming had wrapped. This documentary is dedicated to him. In an example of life imitating art and vice versa, in the classic SAFC (South Australian Film Corporation) SA-shot film Sunday Too Far Away (1975), the old timer drinking character of Old Garth (Reg Lye) passes away during the picture's story. The later film The Royal Hotel (2023), which is a fictionalized dramatic feature film version of 'Hotel Coolgardie', is filmed in South Australia and is an SAFC supported film production.
