This series suggests that Shakespeare was secretly a Catholic. This is a popular theory about Shakespeare's life, though it has never been proved definitively one way or the other.
Craig Pearce, creator of the show, also wrote the screenplay for Romeo + Juliet (1996).
In episode three, when Alice steals the book and runs, Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life" is heard. The opening scene to "Trainspotting", with Ewen Bremner (Topcliffe) also plays the same song as heroin addicts steal and run in the opening scene.
