In the groundbreaking BBC docu series Ways of Seeing (1972), Marxist art critic John Berger says, “Remember that I am controlling and using for my own purposes the means of reproduction needed for these programmes … As with all programmes,...

“The Rapist,” which has its premiere next month at the Busan International Film Festival is the hardest hitting film that Indian filmmaker Aparna Sen has ever made.
A chronicler of different aspects of Indian life, Sen has previously won global acclaim for her eclectic body of work, which includes “36 Chowringhee Lane” (1981), “Paroma” (1985) and “Iti Mrinalini” (2010) as a director.
Sen is also one of India’s most feted actors who has worked with the stalwarts of the country’s cinema including Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen and Rituparno Ghosh and internationally with Ismail Merchant and James Ivory.
Sen had the idea for “The Rapist” some 15 years ago, and decided to revisit the subject after the recent spate of rape incidents in India. “I began to wonder about why men rape. No one is born a rapist. They go through infancy, through the toddler stage and through boyhood in all innocence,” Sen tells Variety.

Interview In this exclusive chat, Sree Vishnu opens up about his upcoming film 'Needi Nadi Oke Katha', making it in the industry on his own and more.Charan TejaFacebook/ Sree Vishnu Born on a leap year, actor Sree Vishnu turned 33 recently. Known for films like Appatlo Okadundevadu, Mental Madhilo, and Vunnadi Okate Zindagi, the actor made his debut in 2011 with the Telugu film Solo. Sree Vishnu went on to play more supporting roles even as he looked for a bigger break to come his way. The actor starred as one of the leads in the successful romcom Prema Ishq Kaadhal and played the critically acclaimed 'Railway Raju' role in Appatlo Okadundevadu. Speaking to Tnm, Sree Vishnu sounds excited about his upcoming film Needi Nadi Oke Katha (Nnok) which is scheduled for a March release. Directed by Venu Udugula who is making his debut with the film, Nnnok is touted to be the first Telugu film which conforms to the Dogme 95 manifesto. A filmmaking movement which was started by two Danish directors, the Dogme 95 manifesto is all about stressing on the traditional values of story, acting and theme, while eschewing elaborate special effects and technology. "I will be playing the lead role in the film, as a youngster who is exhausted with existing formalities, stereotypes, and the unusual importance given to education," says Sree Vishnu. The teasers and trailers of the film have already created a buzz on social media. When asked about his journey thus far, Sree Vishnu is candid, "I'm comfortable now. Earlier though, I used to be shy and not mingle with people. However, I got the confidence later to cope with the nature of the industry." The management graduate who quit his job, started his career in the film industry as an assistant director in 2006. Speaking about the dramatic switch, Sree Vishnu says, "I was working in Hyderabad as a web designer. I found the job to be very routine and I was not satisfied with what I was doing. I resigned and they thought I was moving to another company. But I told them that I'm going to the cinema industry!" Sree Vishnu does not have a godfather in Tollywood, neither does he have any film connections. However, the actor doesn't feel this is a huge disadvantage. He firmly believes that contacts can get you only so far. "We lack guidance and we make mistakes. But we can learn from them. All these years, I have learnt how to convince the audience with my acting," he says. Sree Vishnu played small roles in films like Shekar Kammula's Life Is Beautiful and Trivikram's S/o Sathyamurthi. Several critics lauded Sree Vishnu's performance in Appatlo Okadundevadu and appreciated him for doing films which are not typical fare. Commenting on this, the actor says, "I want to tell honest stories. Nobody will notice me if I do regular films since there are many star heroes who do that. It's only when I do natural, realistic films that I get a kick." He goes on to add, "I never had the desire to be a hero. It's important that the audience is able to relate to my role. I always try to be a good actor." Sree Vishnu also does not mind working with new people, be they directors or actors. Tollywood, in recent times, has seen a string of experimental films, ones that go beyond the constraints of mainstream cinema. Sree Vishnu is happy about changing trend and says, "The change is happening but it will take more time. Unlike the Tamil and Malayali audiences, the Telugu audience has been watching routine films for a long time now. But eventually, Tollywood too will see more of these films." Sree Vishnu shares that he loved the Tamil film Aruvi, which told an unconventional story about a young woman who happens to be an AIDS patient. He's also a fan of Mahesh Babu's 1:Nenokkadine and Rajinikanth's Robo (Endhiran in Tamil). ...

ControversyThe director has denied that Anjali was deliberately left out, blaming it on coincidences.Priyanka ThirumurthyAnjali (Emily) with Aditi (Aruvi). Screenshot.Anybody who has watched the Tamil movie Aruvi which released in 2017, will remember the character of Emily with great clarity. A transgender woman, Emily was the main character Aruvi’s friend, companion and confidante in the low budget movie that has since received multiple laurels. For once, the character of a trans woman was played by a trans woman, and the role was portrayed with great sensitivity. It was actor Anjali, a professional bharatanatyam dancer, who brought life to this character; to say that Anjali did justice to highly emotional role given to her is an understatement. But shortly after the release of the film, activists allege that the crew has refused to give Anjali her due when it comes to recognition. In a scathing Facebook post, transgender rights activist Olga Aaron said that Anjali was not called for award functions and even a meeting with superstar Rajinikanth. "Anjali is a trans woman, who had done one of the important role in recent hit movie 'Aruvi'. She is a very simple girl a budding Bharatnatyam dancer in the shadow her trans woman sister Ponniabinaya Ponniabinaya, with simple ideology that is to live a very quiet, dignified life. She has no access to social media due to lack of exposure,” Olga wrote in her Facebook post. Alleging that Anjali was paid less than the other actors who worked in Aruvi, although she was extensively used, Olga said, “But during celebrating of success of the film, the crew neither include nor involve her." The activist said that Anjali was not informed of the team's meeting with superstar Rajinikanth nor about her bagging the Best Supporting Actress award at the Norway Tamil Film festival. "Among friends and movie goers circle her performance is well appreciated, but in public recognition she is not involved. She was not informed while meeting Rajinikanth. If Rajinikanth has seen the film but not recognized Emily is absolutely not possible. Vikatan fail to choose her for her supporting role, wonder weather its their inappropriate parameter for selection or just took it easy only because she is a Transwoman. Recent recognition of Norway Tamils just not informed to her,” Olga said. Calling it a major injustice to Anjali, Olga said, “As usual the film industry do it again to the trans girl from the suppressed social status. However Anjali Varathan proved that as a trans woman, if provided with the right choice, we prove our excellence. But request film industry to recognize the hard work without bias.” (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = 'https://connect.facebook.net/en_GB/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.11'; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Anjali is a Transwoman, who had done one of the important role in recent hit movie 'Aruvi'. Posted by Olga Aaron on Saturday, 27 January 2018 In response to the allegations, the director of Aruvi, Arun Prabhu denied that information was not being passed on to Anjali. He claimed that it was only a series of coincidences that Anjali was not taken to the Vikatan Awards function, or to meet Rajinikanth. "We deal with all actors the same way. It was superstar Rajinikanth's manager who called and told us that we could visit him. This was based on Aditi Balan's request for a photo with him. We cannot insist that he call the others also," Arun told Tnm. On being asked about the Norway Tamil film festival, the director said, "There has been no official information or call from the Film Festival organisers. I saw it on Twitter two days ago and shared it, that was all. Even Aditi Balan and the editor of the film who have won didn't get any calls." He also vehemently denied that Anjali was paid less than other actors. "That is factually wrong. We actually paid Anjali better than other actors as her role was more important. We even fixed our shooting schedules based on her availability," he said. When asked about why Anjali was not invited to the Ananda Vikatan awards the director said, "We got 12 tickets. But I had not represented my assistant directors anywhere. So I wanted to bring them. I didn't even take my own family." Olga however dismissed the director's defense. "Anjali is soft spoken and is not social media savvy. It is the duty of the director to ensure that she is informed. The attitude of the crew is not right. She is not looking for fame, but that does not mean you don’t recognise her hard work," she said. "So far trans persons are only shown as nasty characters in films. For once that has changed, but due recognition has not been given," she added. When Tnm contacted actor Anjali over the controversy, she said, "Yes I did not know about the crew visiting Rajinikanth or about the Norway awards. But that doesn’t affect my work. I did what I had to for the film,” making it clear that the lack of recognition does not affect her professionalism. "They did call me a couple times in the beginning, but I had other commitments. And after that, I haven’t got any calls from them recently," she added. However, Anjali said, "It will be nice to be recognised because it would be a boost for our whole community.”...

KollywoodThe film has been winning praise from critics and the audience alike.Digital Native aruvi main 750_0-compressed.jpgSivakarthikeyan is a bundle of nerves as he awaits the release of Velaikkaran, in which he plays a blue-collared worker and has teamed up with director Mohan Raja for the first time. Though busy with the promotional work for his film, he took out time to watch the critically-acclaimed Tamil film Aruvi, which is currently the talk of town. Aruvi is special for Siva because it has been directed by his cousin Arun Prabhu Purushothaman, and he’s really happy for the first-time filmmaker. “I watched the film a couple of weeks ago and I was really moved. I really don’t want emotional films because they affect me strongly. I had to watch Aruvi because Arun is my ‘atha payyan’ and it moved me. I’m glad it had a positive ending,” Sivakarthikeyan said in a group media interaction on Wednesday. Having impressed critics and audiences alike, Aruvi has also won over superstar Rajinikanth and has earned his praise. After watching the film in a private screening, Rajinikanth apparently called and spoke to the director for nearly 20 minutes. In a statement, the Sivaji actor said: “Aruvi made me laugh, cry and think about many things in life. This film will be much talked about for years.” The team, according to the statement, is exhilarated over this unconditional appreciation from Rajinikanth. Being raved as the film of the year, Aruvi features debutante Aditi Balan in the titular role. It’s a socio-political drama that revolves around a woman who rebels to get accepted by a society which has problems with the way she is. Produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, Aruvi released in cinemas last week after a successful run at several film festivals across the globe. It had its world premiere at 16th Shanghai International Film Festival last year and was even screened at Mumbai Film Festival in 2016. On Wednesday, producer S.R Prabhu in a tweet revealed that the film has done exceptional business in the Us by grossing around $70k in just five days. Hopeful that it’ll breach into $100k club by second week, he said, adding that the response so far has been terrific for such a small Tamil film. Enanble Notification: NoTNM Marquee: No...

KollywoodThe film takes a jibe at Lakshmy's 'Solvathellam Unmai' and also has a dialogue - "A good film Vijay has acted in? Which one is that?" Tnm Staff aruvi main 750_0-compressed.jpgTamil film Aruvi has opened to rave reviews and great word of mouth. However, not everyone is happy. Actor, director and TV show host Lakshmy Ramakrishnan has taken umbrage to the film since it takes a jibe at her show Solvathellam Unmai. The film has actor Lakshmi Gopalaswamy playing a TV show host for a programme called Solvathellam Sathyam. The host is shown to be insensitive and hypocritical. Lakshmy Ramakrishnan took to Twitter to express her displeasure about how the film allegedly portrays her and the TV show. She asked if the director or anyone from his family had appeared on Solvathellam Unmai to know so much about the show. In the film, Aruvi is a HIV positive person who is mistreated by the TV show host. Lakshmy tweeted that many such persons had participated on the show, suggesting that they were treated with respect and not how the film had portrayed it. She also said that Aruvi was a "feminist film made by cheap & personal attacks on another woman." She further said that while Slumdog Millionaire had based a part of the film on Amitabh Bachchan's game show, people were not made to think that this was how the show runs. She also challenged the makers of the film to face her on camera and answer her queries. Lakshmy asserted that she was doing her work with social responsibility and that it was wrong to "belittle and demean" her for it. You have participated in #Su?Kallakaadhalaa?! Meanwhile, Aruvi has also drawn flak from Vijay fans for a scene that mocks the actor's films – the dialogue, "A good film that Vijay has acted in? Film ReviewLike its title suggests, ‘Aruvi’ is a devastating cascade of emotional highs and lows.Rakesh Mehar aruvi_poster.jpgIf we should talk about films with small budgets but big hearts in Kollywood, few hit the nail on the head like Aruvi, starring debutante actor Aditi Balan. But don’t let the mention of big hearts fool you into thinking that this is an overstuffed sentimental drama. At times Aruvi is downright savage in its observational criticism. After all, how many other Tamil movies can you think of that will talk about middle class life as one big consumption machine designed to further enrich the richest classes of society? From the start, the film directed by Arun Prabhu is miles ahead of most of its compatriots. In an industry where women still function mostly as appendages to aging heroes, Aruvi lavishes all its attention on its female protagonist, a young woman named Aruvi who’s determined not to let society dictate how she lives her life. Losing control of her life for no fault of her own, Aruvi becomes a captor herself through a suddenly escalating set of circumstances. (It’s impossible to reveal any more of the story here without giving away many significant spoilers). Aruvi’s story unfolds much like living memory, going back and forth through her current traumas to the warm embrace of her innocent childhood and back through the sudden tragedies that led to the fall. Through all this, the girl and young woman is frail but powerful, light-hearted but with a deep melancholy that grows through the film. But, like Aruvi herself, the film is unsentimental and clear-headed almost till the very end. So, it doesn’t shy away from showing Aruvi’s rough edges, such as when she puts down a fellow student who begs her for a sanitary napkin so she can avoid the traumatic embarrassment of staining her school clothes. Despite this clear-headedness, the film is not overly harsh, and retains a warm and loving tone throughout. What’s most exciting about the film is how crisp and economical it is. Particularly in the first half, the film lets each picture tell a thousand words, its characters speaking only when absolutely necessary. Most excitingly, it uses creative montages to speed through the lulls between its high moments, and effectively avoids traps where the script could have easily stumbled. Especially the first montage, of Aruvi’s sun-kissed beautiful childhood, accompanied by the wonderful acapella rendition of “Kukkotti Kunaatti”, tugs at the heartstrings so perfectly. When the film does speak, it’s with devastating effect. For instance, in the early parts of the film, Aruvi’s budding friendship with a trans woman (Anjali Varathan) refuses to make any sort of fuss about the latter’s gender identity. The only exception is a line where she says, “These men will even ignore Aishwarya Rai on the street, but they will never leave us alone. Are we that beautiful?” There’s also the great takedown the film does of Tamil talk shows like Solvadhellam Unmai and the moral high-ground that their anchors routinely take. But if the script and direction are wonderful, it is Aditi who fills the film with soul. An amazing revelation, she shows none of the hesitation and reluctance of a debutante. But she never overplays her hand either, not even in the film’s most sentimental moments. The rest of the cast, including Anjali and Lakshmi Gopalaswamy, are no lightweights in their performance, but it is Aditi who holds the film together. Aruvi is not a perfect film. Some parts of the script do feel a tad contrived. And the film too lightly lets off three men who are accused of sexual assault or sexual exploitation. But these are minor quibbles in a film that otherwise works wonderfully. Enanble Notification: NoTNM Marquee: No...
