2017-12-12T07:23:52-08:00'Walking Dead' Ratings Hold Steady for Mid-Season Finale
On the bright side, ratings for this week's mid-season finale of The Walking Dead were just about the same as they were last week. On the darker side, those ratings represent a giant decline from the series' peak popularity and are holding steadyat levels last seen in the second season.
Eric Kain at Forbes has an idea of what's causing the decline, and his recommendation for fixing the problem is drastic. Be warned: there are major spoilers for the latest episode below.
Via Forbes.
Last night, The Walking Dead gave us one of the worst midseason finales the show has ever aired. It was terrible in almost every conceivable way.
The story, which sees a Savior counter-attack against Rick's people, was riddled with plot holes and inconsistencies, capping off the first half to a truly terrible eighth season.

Mubi is hosting the exclusive global premiere of Gary Walkow's Radio Mary (2017), which will be showing November 28 - December 28, 2017.Gary Walkow’s filmmaking career has a peculiar shape. For a while he looked like a low-key American indie success story waiting for his breakthrough. His first feature The Trouble With Dick shared the Grand Prize at the 1987 Us Film Festival, which was renamed to Sundance a few years later. Notes From Underground (1995), a modern-day Dostoyevsky adaptation, premiered at Toronto and got good reviews and a modest bit of distribution; but Beat (2000), with Kiefer Sutherland and Courtney Love as Bill and Joan Burroughs, had a rocky reception at Sundance and seemed to mark the end of Indiewood’s flirtation with Walkow. After a hiatus that included an unfinished film, Walkow’s career began a second, more clandestine phase with Crashing (2007), a very low-budget comedy that eventually received DVD distribution, boosted...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “Outlander” Season 3 Episode 9, “The Doldrums.”]
Unrequited, Requited Love
Blame Fergus and his new “wife,” blame seasickness, blame superstition or blame another twist of fate. Whatever the object of your blame, this week marked another episode of unrequited love — at least in the physical sense — for the show’s two leading characters. As Claire and Jamie headed out to sea in search of young Ian they were forced to sleep in separate quarters, with barely enough privacy for Jamie to puke in peace, let alone get it on with his wife.
Sure, all of that didn’t stop the pair from eventually having (a very literal) quickie during a celebrated rainstorm on deck, but since barely any clothes came off and there was no foreplay to speak of, it doesn’t exactly count. Not when stacked up to some of this season’s more epic love scenes, at any rate. Considering these two will now be...

President Bill Clinton visited Conan O’Brien during his week of shows from New York’s Apollo Theater and talked about how much has changed in the country since he was elected Potus and O’Brien was named host of NBC’s Late Night. On the bright side, the country is more diverse, he began. “The thing that's not so good is that we're in the middle of – this transition of how we get our information and how we communicate,” Potus 42 continued. Stars have proved this week that the combination of pink and red is no longer reserved for cliché Valentine’s Day outfits. In fact, quite the opposite — this pair of hues is glamorous and bold any time of year. Just take a cue from these three stylish celebs: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley chose an embellished colorblock Attico ensemble paired with a sparkly Victoria Beckham clutch, Busy Philipps dressed down her pink and red colorblock midi dress with chunky black oxfords and Kate Bosworth stunned in an Oscar de la Renta pink tulle gown with red sequins.
And now it’s easier than ever to get the look.

“The Walking Dead” remains far, far away from the ratings graveyard. The show’s Season 8 opener, which also doubled as its landmark 100th episode, was the week’s top-rated program among adults 18-49, even leapfrogging over NFL football.
But without the benefit of a major cliffhanger like last season, AMC’s “Dead” plunged from last year’s opener (when [it’s been a year, but spoiler alert nonetheless] Glenn and Abraham were brutally murdered on screen). With three days of DVR and video-on-demand usage included, “The Walking Dead” posted a 6.8 rating in live+3 ratings among adults 18-49 this past Sunday (down from 10.8 last year) and attracted 15 million viewers (down from 20.8 million viewers).
In live viewership, “The Walking Dead” dipped to its lowest-rated premiere since Season 3. The show’s erosion allowed a very different kind of drama to surpass it in total viewers: ABC’s surging “The Good Doctor,” which jumped 52 percent in viewers (from 10.6 million to 16.1 million) after three days of time-shifted playback,...

Sasha Pieterse is onto the next chapter of her life — with a very special someone by her side.
On this week’s Dancing with the Stars, the Pretty Little Liars alum dedicated her foxtrot with pro Gleb Savchenko — which earned her a 24 out of 30 — to her fiancé Hudson Sheaffer, whom she credits with lifting her up during the most challenging period of her life.
Pieterse, 21, gained nearly 70 lbs. over two years due to a hormone condition called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, and she told People after her performance Monday night that she has her “best friend” Sheaffer to thank for being a constant source of support.

2017-10-09T11:05:35-07:00Nfl Ratings Still Relatively Strong This Weekend
Want an update on the continuing saga of NFL ratings? Through week five of the season, the bottom line is that ratings for NFL games are generally higher than they were last season, dashing the hopes of politicians who have sought to incite a boycott of the NFL. While plenty of football fans are willing to tell pollsters that they have a negative opinion of the league, it seems that very few of them are willing to actually refrain from watching the games.
This week's Sunday afternoon game between the Cowboys and the Packers saw a huge ratings increase from the same week last year, while this week's edition of Sunday Night Football saw a more modest increase over last year's ratings. It is undeniable that the political controversy stirred up by Donald Trump has had...

2017-09-30T06:03:10-07:00'American Made' On Pace for Second-Place Weekend
Tom Cruise really needs a box-office success if he wants to maintain his position as an A-list movie star, but it doesn't look like American Made is going to be that success. Cruise's action thriller performed decently on Friday, but it's likely to concede the overall weekend lead to Kingsman: The Golden Circle, last week's top movie. American Made could even give up second place to Stephen King's It, which is still going strong in its third week. On the bright side, American Made will certainly beat horror remake Flatliners, which is going to struggle to make half of the modest amount it was expected to pull in.

Dearest Glenn Close Maniacs and Film Experience Readers (two groups which seem to have much crossover), this just in: Sony Pictures Classic has acquired The Wife for release. After a quick check in with Spc from yours truly they have officially confirmed that they're planning a 2018 release with no qualifying run for this season's Oscar race.
This is either great news or terrible news depending on how you look at it. On the bright side, Sony Pictures Classics has several Best Actress candidates already (Annette Bening, Daniela Vega, etcetera) so why risk diluting their campaigns with another? What's more Best Actress is already a bloodbath (see the charts -- just updated to remove the Glenn Close equation) with more contenders than can possibly be happy with their fate come Oscar nomination. On the downside, sometimes you can lose heat if you wait a year for release and there's no guarantee...

As if bringing emotion to a stage kiss wasn’t difficult enough, try doing it with a camera hanging in front of your face.
Actress Judy Greer dished to People Now about the struggle of wearing a motion-capture suit while trying to get romantic with her costar Andy Serkis on set of their latest film, War for the Planet of the Apes.
“I would say that was quite a challenge,” Greer, 41, said without hesitation.
Greer plays Cornelia, an ape married to Serkis’, 53, character, Caesar. While filming, both actors had to wear full-body motion-capture suits, which track the actors’ movements and translate them into animation.

So you’re reaching the end of your life, you wonder how you’re going to be remembered, if at all. Then you realise, everyone hates you. Your legacy is so utterly negative that your best hope is to be forgotten. What do you do? In journeyman director Mark Pellington’s film, based of first-time writer Stuart Ross Fink’s script, the answer is to write your own obituary.
Or at least, that’s what retired and rich businesswoman Harriet Lauler (Shirley MacLaine) decides to do when she realises she doesn’t have much many miles left on her clock. Indeed, Harriet bullies local newspaper editor Ron (Tom Everett Scott) into sending his obits writer Anne (Amanda Seyfried) to meet Harriet at home, get to know her, talk to friends and family and focus a life story article on the good stuff. Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks on Tuesday proved less “spectacular” than last year, drawing in nearly 600,000 fewer linear viewers. Still, NBC comfortably topped broadcast’s primetime outright, besting the rest of its Big 4 competition combined in the advertiser-sought 18-49 demographic. Of course, everything else on those other channels was a rerun, which diminishes that claim quite a bit. On the bright side, this show was the second-highest-rated Macy’s fireworks special in four years, and the 2017 TV event grew all the way to its big finish. Now that Netflix is canceling shows, rival executives are more than happy to welcome them back down to earth.
Netflix made waves recently when CEO Reed Hastings admitted that the streaming service needed to strike a balance with its lineup and start trimming some underperforming shows from its roster. Soon after, it cut “Sense8” and “The Get Down.”
“I’m glad they’re canceling shows,” FX original programming president Nick Grad said Friday at the Atx Television Festival. “They have to start making decisions. They can’t have 10,000 shows on! It brings them back into the ecosystem, where we’re all trying to make the best shows and best decision.”
Added Hulu head of content/senior VP Craig Erwich, “they are capitalists, so I assume at any time they’re making the best decisions. If canceling shows is at the phase they are where it makes sense.”
