Catherine Reitman based this show on her experiences as a new mom. In the pilot episode the character, Frankie, reveals that she need a "brain dead vacation" and when she fantasizes about being hit by a car so she can take a hospital break, was inspired by Reitman's own life. She has stated in many interviews while promoting the show, that this scene was taken almost directly from her own mommy and me group. The only difference is that none of the other mommies understand and instead made her feel alone and guilty for feeling this way.
