"Non-Player Character"

An NPC is a background character in the game that has a predetermined set of actions or responses. The gamer might be able to interact with it physically (as in, attack it), or have a dialogue exchange whereby the player can gather information by selecting from a set of predetermined questions (and getting the predetermined responses). In other words, as it relates to this movie, the NPC has no free will, can never do anything other than exactly what it's programmed to do.

As a side-note specific to this movie however, NPC is referred to as Non-Playable Character as opposed to the far more common and acceptable Non Player Character.

It wasn't that kind of game. Millie's and Keys' shelved indie game wasn't an original build of Free City; its underlying code was secretly repurposed for the different type of game we see play out.
