Official entry from India for the Oscars
It was a box office success, and is regarded as one of the most profitable films of 2017.
The cast and crew traveled to the small town of Dalli Rajhara and they shot the film in the jungles of Chattisgarh for 37 days.
After the film's release and its selection as India's entry for the Oscars, Newton was criticized for its striking similarities with the Iranian movie Secret Ballot. In defence, film-maker Anurag Kashyap voiced his support to the team of Newton, stating "Newton is as much a copy of Secret Ballot as The Avengers is of Watan Ke Rakhwale".
It was the first Indian film to receive a grant of Rs 1 crore from the Central Government.
