Last year, Toho released a new Godzilla film, titled Godzilla Minus One (read our review Here), in Japan on November 3rd, which happens to be Godzilla Day, the anniversary of the 1954 release of the original Godzilla movie. That was the 69th anniversary – and since this year marks the 70th anniversary of the original film, Godzilla Minus One is returning to theatres this weekend, with screenings starting on November 1st. There’s also a black & white version of Godzilla Minus One that’s called Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color, and that version of the film is also returning to theatres for this celebration. On January 12th, a black & white version of Godzilla Minus One reached theatres in Japan… and Deadline has confirmed that this black & white version, which is called Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color, will also be getting a U.S. theatrical run! Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color will begin showing in U.S. theatres on January 26th, then the theatrical runs for both versions of the film will be coming to an end on February 1st.

There was a rumor going around that the film had a budget of $15 million – but director Takashi Yamazaki has since spoken up and said he wished he had that much to work with, because the budget was actually lower. Based on a manga by Ryohei Saigan, “Destiny: The Tale of Kamakura” is not the first adaptation of Saigan onto the big screen, as director Takashi Yamazaki adapted several of Saigan’s manga series. It is no coincidence that Takashi Yamazaki decided to adapt this surreal story, as he is considered one of the leading special effect authorities in Japan.

The film is set in what appears to be early 20th century Japan in an alternative world in which Youkai (supernatural creatures) live among the humans. Kamakura is a modest town where Akiko (Mitsuki Takahata), a young and energetic woman, moves in with her new husband Isshiki Masakazu (Masato Sakai), a mystery writer and freelancer detective working for the police. In this town, the magical creatures and humans live peacefully together. However, there is an evil creature that is after Akiko.

With half the month gone, September has been quite soft compared to the sizzling summer season. Last week’s box office (Sep 10-16) plunged further by about 23% week-on-week, representing the third slowest week in 2018.

Opening top, Hong Kong anti-corruption crime thriller L Storm blew away with $28.9m from its three-day weekend (including previews), the biggest debut of the Icac franchise that began with Z Storm and S Storm. This third installment reunites producer Raymond Wong and director David Lam with actor Louis Koo and Julian Cheung, with Kevin Cheng and Stephy Tang joining the cast.

Hong Kong-made action-thriller “L Storm” topped the Chinese box office with an opening weekend score of $29.4 million. That gave it nearly 60% market share on another quiet weekend in Chinese theaters.

The weekend was characterized by the release of a large number of smaller titles into a window ahead of the Autumn Festival holiday blockbusters at the end of the month. Only “L Storm” made any significant impact, and was the third highest grossing film worldwide, according to ComScore.

The movie is a sequel to 2016 title “S Storm” and involves popular star Louis Koo as an anti-corruption investigator, this time apparently on the wrong side of the law. Directed by David Lam, it is produced by Raymond Wong’s Pegasus Films, and counts Huace Pictures, Wanda, and Er Dong Pictures as mainland Chinese co-producers. Data from Ent Group show it given a wide release, with over 120,000 screenings per day.

The honeymoon is over for newlyweds Akiko and Masakazu Isshiki, who’ve just moved into his family home in the quiet town of Kamakura. While her husband, an author of fantastic fiction, struggles with writers block, Akiko has to come to terms with the rough spots in a marriage – the misunderstandings, the doubts, her husbands obsessive toy-train hobby. And then there are the peculiarities of Kamakura, which, as Masakazu remarks offhandedly, has been a magnet for mystical energy for millennia. Ghosts, goblins, even a charming local death god amble through its streets, and what’s more, her husband moonlights as a “spectral investigator” for the local police! For such a sleepy little town, there are certainly a lot of strange things going on.

We've got a trailer for the opening night film, Destiny: The Tale of Kamakura, that is simply enchanting. Directed by Yamazaki Takashi, it revolves around a mystery novelist / detective and his new wife. She is surprised to learn that they will be living in a town that is filled with weird, mystical, though basically friendly, creatures. But then something drastic happens, and the detective must put his skills to very personal use. The film opened in Japan last December and opens in Hong Kong later this week, on Thursday, May 10.
