For Apc Studios, “The Eclipse,” an atmospheric, procedural mystery thriller set in a rural community on France’s Aubrac plateau, could well offer a winning formula for international buyers at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Le Havre and beyond.
The series turns on a mystery that originates during an evening eclipse when 17-year-old Luca accidentally shoots his girlfriend, Nour. When he leaves to seek help, the young girl disappears. Manue and Johanna, two local women cops, are dispatched on an investigation that will ultimately impact their own families.
Summing up the show, Apc states in its tagline: “An effective whodunit taking us to a never-seen-before, magnificent French countryside. The duo of female cops, mothers and friends, turn a small community inside out.”
Emmanuelle Guilbart, Apc’s joint CEO and founder, says the company picked up the six-part series “for many reasons,” mainly related to its pedigree. Namely, it was commissioned by...

There’s no doubt that crafting games such as The Forest, and Subnautica are integral parts of the modern video gaming landscape, giving players the freedom to let their creativity go wild.
This can range from switching a world in the player’s own design to crafting weapons and other items. As long as a title’s mechanics bring the ability to create a new entity, and place it in a world, it’s a crafting game. As crafting is now so popular, plenty of new games have popped up that introduce the feature to enhance overall gameplay.
Let’s take a look at the 5 best crafting games for those gamers who want to test their crafting, and sustainability skills.

Toutouyoutou on MHz Choice
“Toutouyoutou” (pronounced “Two-Two-You-Two) is a comedy series set in a middle-class French suburb in the 1980s. The main women are either married or divorced. All the men work for a pioneering aeronautics company, focused on keeping up with, if not outpacing, the Americans, Russians and Brits in technological development. Everyone is getting along comfortably until a wild card is introduced. Jane (Alexia Barlier), a super attractive, outgoing Yank comes to town, introducing aerobics to the area just as it’s starting to gain popularity elsewhere. Despite her outward friendliness, suspicion starts to grow that her motives may not be as innocent as they seem. The one to have the most nagging doubts is Karine (Claire Dumas), who emerges as the main protagonist.
All the men find Jane alluring. The women want to be like her, sign up for her classes and start forming friendships.

When it comes to the controversy over women’s objectification in Hollywood, Natalie Dormer and Chris Pratt are on opposite sides of the battlefield. While Pratt has raised concerns about the portrayal of women, especially in blockbuster films, Dormer—ever the fierce advocate for artistic integrity—has a different perspective. The Game of Thrones star, who is no stranger to playing complex and often provocative roles, defended the series, calling its portrayal of women ‘naturalistic’ and not exploitative.

In a world where opinions clash like swords in Westeros, Dormer’s stance is as bold as her characters, sparking a debate that’s as heated as a dragon’s breath. But to her, it’s just the way things are.

Recent charts showcasing the PlayStation store’s top sales in May 2024 are making the rounds. It looks like, as of now, there’s a certain type of game that PS4 and PS5 users are into—Xbox exclusives.
That’s right, most of the chart is occupied by former exclusives. If the head of the gaming brand, Phil Spencer is taking a look at this data right, it seems we can expect more exclusives to head on over to Sony’s console in the future.

Kerry Condon follows up her Oscar nomination with a thankless piece of Blumhouse schlock that tries, and fails, to make swimming pools scary
It’s long been an extreme palate cleanser, the first weekend of January following a season of weighty awards fare with a froth of schlock horror, from fine dining to a guilty stop at McDonald’s after. Masterworks such as The Devil Inside (6%), Texas Chainsaw 3D (19%), The Forest (10%) and The Unborn (10%) have all crept out of the gate in previous years, often unscreened for critics, and despite a consistent lack of quality, the practice has become profitable, audiences happy to see in the new year with the very worst the industry has to offer. Then last year, there was an unlikely win with sly evil doll horror M3gan, bucking the trend as not only a major commercial smash but also a critical one, and backers, horror hit-factory Blumhouse,...

At one point in time, Steven Spielberg was set to direct the thriller Cape Fear, while Martin Scorsese was attached to direct the historical drama Schindler’s List. Then Scorsese decided to step away from Schindler’s List, a choice that coincided with Spielberg deciding that Cape Fear was too violent for him. So the directors traded movies – resulting in Scorsese directing Robert De Niro and Juliette Lewis to Oscar nominations for Cape Fear and Spielberg turning Schindler’s List into a Best Picture winner. Now Deadline reports that Spielberg and Scorsese are teaming up to executive produce a TV series adaptation of Cape Fear, with Nick Antosca on board as executive producer and showrunner.
Antosca’s previous credits include Hannibal, The Forest, Channel Zero, Brand New Cherry Flavor, Antlers, The Act, Candy, and A Friend of the Family.

Berlin-based sales agent ArtHood Entertainment has picked up world rights, outside of much of East Asia, to “Salli,” a film which has its world premiere this week in the Busan International Film Festival’s A Window on Asian Cinema program.
The Mandarin-, Taiwanese-, English- and French-language film follows a lonely middle-aged chicken farmer Hui-Chun, who doesn’t speak English and develops a romantic relationship through an app with a French man who calls himself Martin. In the online world, Hui-Chun is Salli. Despite everyone calling it a romance scam, she wants to prove that love indeed exists.
The Taiwan-France film marks the feature debut of Taipei-based filmmaker Lien Chien-Hung after several acclaimed shorts and a TV movie.
“The reason why I want to make ‘Salli’ is because of very common news in Taiwan. Many men and women are deceived by love on the internet,” Lien told Variety earlier this year.

Endnight Games’ The Forest has become something of a cult-classic since its 2014 inception. Despite being produced by a small, previously unheard of indie games studio, its immersive gameplay and eerie remote island atmosphere made it a hit to invest hours into both by yourself, and with friends. For those unfamiliar, think Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing: New Horizons…except with cannibals. And demons. And spooky, dark caves to unearth your latent claustrophobia. Needless to say, when its nearly decade-later sequel was announced, it was highly anticipated (even becoming the most wishlisted game on Steam). As one of those fans, I was highly satisfied with the end result, but Sons of the Forest left me feeling that there’s a bit more to be desired.
The story of Sons of the Forest is roughly the same as its predecessor: you find yourself in an in-media-res helicopter crash landing on a remote...

There's a scene in the music video for iLe and Ivy Queen's single "Algo Bonito," released on Mar. 2, where iLe stares down three anonymous men in a western standoff fashion. Dressed in all black, her hands holstered on her hips, she dispatches all three con solo una mirada. It's become clear that, while iLe's music has always been a medium for her progressive and feminist values, the track off her latest album "Nacarile" isn't pulling any punches. As she tells Popsugar, "Las mujeres están hartas." Translation: women are fed up.
According to the singer, it was this patriarchal frustration that became the seed from which "Algo Bonito" would sprout. "I was just feeling frustrated with the day-to-day of being a woman," iLe says. "You know there were so many things happening that just had me feeling this sense of rage. The concept for the song really came out of wanting to vocalize that.

Update, 1 Pm Pt: Johnny Depp was “drunk a lot of the time,” Ellen Barkin told a Virginia courtroom today of her Fear and Loathing in Last Vegas co-star in his 50 million defamation suit against Amber Heard.
The highest-profile witness to give testimony at the April 11 starting trial, Barkin’s stint on the virtual stand was relatively short and scathing for Depp. In a video deposition from November 22, 2019, the Emmy-winning actress told the court Thursday that Depp was always drinking or smoking a joint during their time as a couple of sorts in the mid-1990s.

The French prodigy, who won an Oscar for The Father, talks about The Forest, his labyrinthine new drama following a man whose life unravels after an affair
Florian Zeller has made a speciality of disorienting his audiences. Last year, the skilfully blurred timeline of The Father, based on his own Alzheimer’s-inspired play, landed him an Oscar for best adapted screenplay, along with a best actor award for Anthony Hopkins. Yet the French playwright and director’s new work, The Forest, about to have its world premiere at Hampstead theatre in London, may be his most disconcerting yet.
“I tried to create a maze,” Zeller says over Zoom from his home in Paris. On stage, scenes repeat themselves with micro-variations: different actors may or may not be playing the same person. “The goal wasn’t to lose people in this forest. It was to put them in a confusing situation...

Hunter S. Thompson is a confounding figure. Though he didn’t invent Gonzo journalism, he is the most identifiable face of it. His first-person narrative style of news gathering makes him partially accountable for the overriding trends of internet journalism, on both sides of the aisle and all the cleanup calls which go along with them. Thompson’s 1970 attempt to run for sheriff of Pitkin County, Colorado, marked the beginning of baby boomer politicking. Writer-director Bobby Kennedy III’s Fear and Loathing in Aspen tells that story with wit, wisdom and weirdness.
Set just before Thomson, played by Jay Bulger, caught his stride with his 1971 novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream, the film conjures the energy of strange, new beginnings. Much of it is shot on vintage grade, grainy film stock, and it looks like the actors were free...

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for the series finale of “Last Man Standing.”)
After nine season and two networks, “Last Man Standing” finally sat down on Thursday with a series finale that metaphorically said goodbye to the show by literally saying goodbye to Mike Baxter’s (Tim Allen) beloved truck, which was stolen just after he’d completed his 10-year restoration on the antique car.
The hourlong two-parter, titled “Baxter Boot Camp / Keep On Truckin,’” managed to remain mostly upbeat, which is exactly what Allen and “Last Man Standing” showrunner Kevin Abbott wanted for the ending of the Fox sitcom. But the writers did get in one big emotional scene, where Mike, Vanessa (Nancy Travis) and all the members of the Baxter family and their closest friends gathered together for a memorial service to mourn the loss of the show — er, truck.
Here, Abbott breaks down the decisions that went...

Alternativet Produksjon, the Norwegian film banner behind Guro Bruusgaard’s “Him,” has more thought-provoking projects in the pipeline, including Mariken Halle’s pandemic-themed film “The Outdoor School” and Katja Eyde Jacobsen’s feminist movie “The Second Sex.”
The company was launched in 2017 by four filmmakers, including Halle, Jacobsen, Bruusgaard and Magnus Mork to produce their movies collectively, with a special interest in politically or socially engaged projets. The banner’s latest film credit, “Him,” revolves around three males of different ages who experience some form of social humiliation. The buzzed-about film had its international premiere last month at the Moscow Festival, where it competed.
“The Second Sex,” which seems to be the female counterpart to “Him,” follows three generations of Norwegian women in different social settings. Weaving documentary and fictional elements, the film revolves around a grandmother, a mother and a daughter, and their relationship with one another. “The Second...

One of the most frequent complaints people have about director Zack Snyder‘s DC superhero movies is that films like Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and even the recently-released Zack Snyder’s Justice League take their subject matter too seriously. The tonal clashes that occur when costumed heroes are gravely intoning about things like Mother Boxes […]

Hello again, everyone! We only have a few titles on the docket for this week’s home media releases, but there’s still some fun stuff to keep an eye out for, especially if you're a fan of classic genre films. Mondo Macabro is keeping busy with several Blu-ray releases, including Panic Beats, Blood Ceremony, and Queens of Evil, Code Red is showing some love to an often overlooked ’80s slasher—The Forest—and Bless the Child is getting re-released on DVD for the first time in decades, too. Also being released on March 9th is Rent-a-Pal from Scream Factory.
Blood Ceremony
In 19th century Europe, the people are in the grip of ancient superstitions and the fear of vampires runs riot through the land. Strange rituals are enacted to seek out the resting places of the undead and macabre trials are held over disinterred corpses. The Countess barely notices what is going on.

The following contains spoilers for Cobra Kai season 3.
When Tory Nichols (Peyton List) first appeared in Cobra Kai, she was the best red herring ever. She introduced herself in season 2 episode 4 “The Moment of Truth” as “Tory… with a ‘Y’” and every fan of the original film went ballistic. In The Karate Kid, Ali Mills (Elisabeth Shue) introduced herself to Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) as “Ali… with an ‘I’” so we all wondered if Tory might be Ali’s daughter.
Then season 3 leads us on even more. In the second episode of this season, “Nature vs Nurture,” there’s a scene set in Tory’s apartment. She is caring for her invalid mother, but her mom is off screen. We don’t see her. Why would they hide her if she wasn’t Ali?
Well, it wasn’t Ali. But Ali makes a glorious return all the same in episodes...

Before becoming a filmmaker, Leaving Las Vegas director Mike Figgis was a musician and performer in the experimental group called The People Show. Before that, he played trumpet and guitar in the experimental jazz ensemble The People Band, whose first record was produced by Rolling Stone drummer Charlie Watts. He is also the founding patron of an online community of independent filmmakers called Shooting People. You can say Figgis is a People person, which makes him the perfect director to capture Ronnie Wood in the documentary Somebody Up There Likes Me.
One of rock and roll’s most iconic guitarists, Wood is good with people. He plays well with others. He is the Stone who’s never alone. Before he began weaving guitar licks with Keith Richards in the Rolling Stones, Wood helped shape the British rock sound in bands like The Birds and the Creation. He was the bass...

For many Elsa fans, it’s the highlight of Frozen 2. Inside of Ahtohallan, a river of memories that’s been frozen into a glacier of ice, Queen Elsa of Arendelle finally confronts the truth about her past, her family’s history, and her own soul. And she does it all while singing an empowering anthem. Yet even with Idina Menzel’s highest of high notes, the song is unlike “Let It Go” due to a melancholic undertone about Elsa facing the ghosts of her family’s legacy and accepting her full identity.
The scene is preferred by many over the more straight-forward attempt to recapture “Let It Go,” aka “Into the Unknown,” including apparently Menzel herself, who previously hinted she would’ve liked to see Disney campaign “Show Yourself” for Best Song at the Oscars. It didn’t work out that way, but then as we now know the...

Editor’s note: Like much of the world, Madrid is currently engaged in social distancing practices and self-isolation. That includes the city’s most celebrated filmmaker, Pedro Almodovar, who been writing essays documenting his experiences and the memories that have come up as a result. This is the first installment, provided to IndieWire by the filmmaker and translated into English by Mar Diestro-Dópido. For reasons that will soon be obvious, this essay was written prior to Easter Sunday.
