New Delhi, March 23 (Ians) Filmmaker G. Ashok has shared the reason why he feels his Bollywood debut film "Durgamati" did not do as well as its original Telugu version "Bhaagamathie", which was also directed by him. He feels the film didn't do well because the Hindi version went directly to Ott and did not have a theatrical release.
"Theatrical release," Ashok cites as reason while talking to Ians when we ask him why "Durgamati" fared below expectaions. He adds: "Due to unprecedented times, we unfortunately couldn't release the film in theatres. Durgamati's strength is its horror element, and horror is only enjoyed with good sound in dark rooms like in theatres."
"Durgamati" stars Bhumi Pednekar, Maahie Gill and Jisshu Sengupta.
Speaking about his camaraderie with Bhumi, director Ashok said: "For the lead character in the film, I wanted a performer who could pull the show alone. Bhumi is known...

MollywoodNot many south Indian actors have gained or lost weight drastically for a film, but when it's done, they need to be careful about how they go about it. CrisShibla before 'Kakshi: Amminippilla' and during the filmingAt the audition, Shibla thought she wouldn’t have a chance. All around her were overweight women, just as the casting call had asked for. Shibla, who was then slightly above average weight, was not sure if she would be considered suitable. But surprisingly, the team that auditioned her asked if she could put on some weight. Shibla had nothing to think about – yes, she said. When Kakshi: Amminippilla released, therefore, we saw a much heavier Shibla play Kanthi, disliked by the man she’s newly married to -- mainly because of her weight and also because he was forced into it.. It took Shibla four months to gain those 20 kgs, and just as long to lose it afterward.

TollywoodHer portrayal as Arundhati won her accolades from all quarters.Digital NativeDigital NativeAnushka Shetty is one of the few heroines who have been able to bag women-centric roles consistently. The gorgeous actor made her debut with the Telugu movie Super way back in 2005 but it was in 2009 the film buffs started to notice her. Her portrayal as Arundhati won her accolades from all quarters. Directed by Kodi Ramakrishna, she appeared in two roles - Arundhati and Jejamma – in the movie and captivated the audiences with her spelling binding performance. She was then seen as Rudramadevi in the film with the same title but Baahubali was the crown of it all. Though she had limited scope of performance in Baahubali: the Beginning, in its sequel she had a meaty role to play with a larger screen presence. And now, Anushka Shetty is basking in glory over the positive reviews pouring in for her Bhaagamathie which released on January 26, 2018. The film was directed by G Ashok and was released in Telugu as well as Tamil. In an interview to OnManorama, the actor opened up about the roles she got to play so far and revealed that it was intentional that she selected women-centric roles. She however added that she choose powerful scripts with exciting storylines. In the interview, she was quoted as saying, “It's not that I pick movies that are centered on women characters. I choose powerful scripts with exciting storylines. But I agree that the kind of scripts that are coming in, share a basic thread that revolves around a powerful woman character. I think in south India, Arundhathi kick-started a wave of women-centric fantasy movies, thanks to filmmaker Kodi Ramakrishna. Arundhathi did really well in Indian cinema. I am glad that I'd been a part of it. I think Arundhathi opened up a market for such movies again.”...

TollywoodThe film is most likely to become the first south Indian female-centric film to enter Rs 50 crore club.Digital NativeDigital NativeThere’s a reason why Anushka Shetty is referred as Lady Superstar by her fans. Among the leading actresses in southern cinema, she enjoys a large fan base and market of her own which has helped her films at the box-office over the years. Her latest release Bhaagamathie is no exception as the film has stirred up a storm at the ticket window, grossing around Rs 12 crore on the first day worldwide. Sources in the trade believe that the film, thanks to its strong content and highly positive word of mouth, is most likely to become the first south Indian female-centric film to enter Rs 50 crore club. With Bhaagamathie performing beyond the makers’ expectations at the box-office, Anushka now has two films in the Rs 10 crore and above on the opening day club. Her 2015 historic drama Rudhramadevi grossed Rs 12.50 crore on the first day. Unfortunately, Rudhramadevi ended up as an average grosser by the end of its theatrical run, given its high budget and overall production cost. Bhaagamathie, on the other hand, has been made on a much lesser budget and the makers are sure to enjoy profits. Anushka is thrilled with the response to Bhaagamathie. She took to Facebook and wrote: In the Us, Bhaagamathie has already zoomed past the half-million mark and might end up becoming the first south Indian heroine-centric film to enter the million dollar club. According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the film as of Saturday has minted Rs. 3.44 crore in the Us. Early estimates suggest that the film might have minted around $725k in its opening weekend in USA and if the estimated numbers are anything to go by, the film might supersede star-studded Telugu films such as McA, Nenu Local and Hello.

TollywoodAnushka is awesome and delivers a power-packed performance but the second half of the film doesn't hold up.Sowmya RajendranDirector G Ashok reportedly waited for five years so Anushka Shetty could do Bhaagamathie. And you can see why. There is no woman actor in the south who has the kind of commanding presence that Anushka does. When she's on screen, there's no one else you want to watch. I suppose if I ever met her in person, I'd hear imaginary elephants trumpeting around me because she gets under the skin of these regal roles so convincingly. The trailer for Bhaagamathie had set the expectation that the film would be along the lines of Arundhati, the 2009 horror thriller, which established Anushka Shetty, the performer. But Ashok uses that very expectation to pull the carpet from under your feet. The film opens with an intriguing sequence that shows a village under attack from some powerful evil. And then, we meet Chanchala Ias (Anushka), who is in remand because of a murder. From there on, the film moves to an abandoned bungalow, the tired trope of every Indian horror film. But if you've followed the film's promos, you'd know that it isn't any ordinary ghost's bungalow, it's Bhaagamathie's (sorry, I cannot help but get carried away by how Anushka makes that declaration). Chanchala and Vaishnavi (Asha Sharath in a tailormade role as Cbi director), play mind games with each other and the scenes remind one of what the latter did in the Malayalam Drishyam (remade in Telugu as Drushyam). Ashok also seems to have taken inspiration from the Malayalam classic Manichitrathaazhu, which was later remade in several languages. The film sets up the creeps well initially. There's also the suspense of why someone as upright as Chanchala would have committed a murder. But after a point, the tried and tested boo moments become repetitive. However, just as you start feeling restless, there comes that terrific scene right before the interval which has the audience going crazy. This is the moment that the crowd has been waiting for all along and, boy, do they lap it up! Anushka alternates between playing the gentle Chanchala and the vengeful Bhaagamathie with ease. This is an actor who can pull off stereotypical depictions of femininity without it grating on your nerves — so when she swoons at the sight of blood in one scene, it doesn't put you off because she takes herself seriously and isn't around just as a decorative festoon. In another scene, a character comes up with a back story for Bhaagamathie's rage and when he starts narrating the same-old tale of rape-and-revenge, I was beginning to roll my eyes. But then, so does Anushka's character and I was pleasantly surprised. The brief romance with Shakti (an uneven performance from Unni Mukundan) comes to us in bits and pieces through a non-linear narrative, adding to the suspense. However, the second half of the film proves to be a let-down. It does pack in a few surprises, but the screenplay is bloated and the characters speechify too much. Jayaram, who plays a politician and mentor to Chanchala, makes the best of a poorly written character. We're made to wait for the revelations for too long and when they finally come, it's long-winded and not very convincing. I shall never understand why villains in Indian films go to such great lengths to explain their actions in detail to their victims. Perhaps if we'd seen more of Bhaagamathie (sorry, I can't get over it), we'd have forgotten all the quibbles. Thamman's background score is a constant presence in the film. It's unnecessarily loud and tries to compensate for the visuals which aren't all that scary. You know that delicious fear that makes your spine tingle when there's absolute silence? Bhaagamathie has no use for such moments and it's a pity because the abandoned bungalow set-up lends itself to unsettling you with teeny-tiny noises. Instead, what we get are loud bangs and screeches over a throbbing score. The 'Bhaagamathie' moan, however, is haunting and stays in your mind long after the film. The CGI isn't great – the first visual of an apparition we see is far from impressive. However, the portions when Anushka depicts a possessed woman are convincing. The actor's body language and expressions power these scenes through, making you suspend your disbelief. The camera, alternating between close-up shots and long ones, succeeds in creating a disassociation between Chanchala and Bhagaamathie effectively. Bhaagamathie is Anushka's film all the way and the actor's performance is what ultimately makes us stay till the end to find out what on earth happened in that bungalow – Bhaagamathie's bungalow (all right, I shall stop). TollywoodThe video starts with a gyrating dancer – usually a cue that the hero will appear in an 'item' number, but it's Anushka who walks in.Tnm StaffThe promo video for Anushka Shetty's Bhaagamathie was launched on Wednesday, a few days ahead of the film's release. The video starts with a gyrating dancer – the cue that the hero is going to appear on screen, surrounded by adoring women. But the hero of Bhaagamathie is Anushka Shetty and it is she who walks into the picture. Is this perhaps for the first time that we've had an 'item' song without any man in the visuals?! Anushka is in command as she dances along, shifting between a shimmery dress and more casual, rapper clothes. We also see shots from the making of the film, as the towering Anushka transforms into Bhaagamathie. One of them shows a man who looks a Lot like actor Prabhas with his face covered. Prabhas played Amarendra Baahubali opposite Anushka in the Baahubali franchise. The song, composed by Thaman, is quite catchy and is an interesting choice for a film that looks like a good portion of it will be set in the past or in a mythic land. Directed by G Ashok, the film also stars Unni Mukundan. The trailer of Bhaagamathie, which reminded fans of Anushka's powerful portrayals over the years, beginning from Arundhati, has upped the expectations from the film greatly. This will be Anushka's first release after the phenomenal success of Baahubali 2, in which she played the striking Devasena. The actor is among the few women stars in the industry who've consistently done films centred around their character. She, along with Nayanthara, is one of the highest paid women stars in the south. Bhaagamathie will release in Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu on January 26. Watch:...

CinemaA historical horror thriller, the film is touted to be released worldwide on Republic Day.Digital NativeAnushka Shetty played the female lead in Baahubali, which had Prabhas playing the title role. Though she had little screen space in Baahubali: The Beginning, her screen presence was much more in the sequel Baahubali: The Conclusion. However, it was Prabhas who stole the show playing the title role in both the films. Post Baahubali, which was a phenomenal success, there have been huge expectations for Bhaagamathie, which has Anushka Shetty in the lead role. The film is touted to hit the silver screens on Republic Day this year and promos are happening in full swing. The audio launch function of Bhaagamathie happened recently and it was well-attended by leading actors such as Suriya, Ramya Krishnan, Anushka Shetty herself, etc. Speaking at the event, its music composer S Thaman had said that while Baahubali was for Prabhas, Bhaagamathie will be for Anushka, indicating that it is a complete heroine-centric film with the lady having a meaty role to play. Thaman also added that the background score would be the highlight of the film just as it was for Arundhathi, which was instrumental in catapulting Anushka to star status. Talking at the audio launch, Anushka said, “I listened to the script of Bhaagamathie in 2012, almost five years back. Since I was busy shooting Baahubali and Rudhramadevi, I couldn’t allocate dates for this film immediately. Later, I had to begin shooting for Rajinikanth’s Lingaa and Size Zero. But the production house Uv Creations waited till 2016 to start shooting since they trusted me with the character.” Directed by G Ashok, the film’s Telugu version has been bankrolled by Vamsi Krishna Reddy and Pramod, and the Tamil version by Studio Green’s Ke Gnanavel Raja. The star cast of the film also includes Jayaram, Unni Mukundan, Asha Sarath, Aadhi Pinisetty, Vidyullekha Raman, S Thaman and Thalaivasal Vijay. R Madhie has cranked the camera for this venture with Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao editing it. Bhaagamathie is touted to be a historical horror thriller, in which Anushka will be seen as Bhaagamathie and Chanchala Ias. The Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu versions of the film will hit the silver screens on January 26 worldwide.
