Unfortunately, the most notable thing about new sorta-cyber thriller Black Mail is that this weekend it is receiving the widest release ever — 100 screens — in the UK for an independent Black British film. That’s a nice barrier to break, and I wish I could recommend the film.
Does anyone actually fall for those sextortion emails in which scammers inform you — invariably in broken English and with no proof whatsoever — that they’ve installed spyware on your computer and have recorded video of you “having fun” at a p0rn website, and threaten to send it to all your contacts unless you placate them with some Bitcoin? Well, Ray Chinda falls for it… and reacts in a ridiculously stupid way that confirms him as an easy mark. Even more unlikely than that, Chinda is meant to be “a world-famous action star at the top of his career” (according to the film...

The Oscars don’t always get it right. There have been many notable injustices since the first ceremony took place in 1929, but surely none more surprising than the absence of Alfred Hitchcock’s name from the list of winners.
The man responsible for some of the greatest films ever made, and who committed many of cinema’s most deathless images to celluloid, never won an Academy Award despite being nominated for best director on five occasions: Rebecca in 1940, Lifeboat in 1944, Spellbound in 1945, Rear Window in 1954 and Psycho in 1960.
However, these five movies represent just a small percentage of Hitchcock’s magnificent oeuvre of 52 films. To counteract this injustice, here is my selection of his 20 greatest.
20. Blackmail (1929)
A young woman kills a man who tries to rape her and then finds herself caught between the investigating policeman, who happens to be her fiance, and a blackmailer. Generally considered to be the first British talkie,...

Nigeria has become one of the latest major battlegrounds in the streaming wars. Both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have made sizeable moves into Africa’s most populous nation as they look to boost their subscribers, signing several deals with local producers and studios for Nollywood content.
Netflix recently unveiled its latest slate of originals from the continent that was busy with Nigerian projects (including a buzzy movie premiering in Toronto) just days after Amazon touted its first two Nigerian originals. But while industry eyes may be on activity within the country, Nollywood is about to have a milestone moment in U.K. cinemas.

Tribute My first memory of Irrfan Khan was 14 years ago, in a TV series called Mano Ya Na Mano (Believe it or not), and I’ve been captivated ever since.Geetika MantriIrrfan/FacebookI remember the first time I watched Irrfan Khan on screen, 14 years ago. Not unusually, 12-year-old me was surfing the channels on the TV till something grabbed my attention on Star One. It was his voice that caught me – he was setting the stage for an episode of a show called Mano Ya Na Mano (Believe it or not). The show itself was about mystical, inexplicable and spooky things that have happened in India – which was right up my alley – but it was Irrfan’s calm anchoring that pulled me in. From that day on, I would try to catch the reruns of the show every afternoon – I wasn’t allowed to watch TV too late at night,...

Operation save Kirby was in full effect on Dynasty Season 3 Episode 10, but the episode felt more like a filler and didn't do much in terms of progressing the overall storyline.
Kirby, though an asset to the show, is a supplemental character whose rescue mission didn't need to take up a full hour.
The best part was seeing Fallon and Adam team up as they pretended to be husband and wife to infiltrate the compound.
Without having to play the deranged brother, Sam Underwood was allowed to shine in his role and almost convinced us to like Adam ... almost.
Specifically, he was able to showcase his musical talents in a groovy duet with Fallon. Those two were so happy together.
When Fallon and Adam put aside their difference, they make a great team.
Their dynamic is fun, there's an energy about them, and they hilariously play off of each other.

Just about anything with film historian and media writer Wes D. Gehring’s name on it will be of quality. A professor of telecommunications at Ball State University in Indiana and author of the regular column “The Reel World” in USA Today magazine, Gehring has distinguished himself as an expert on comedy—especially as it has been utilized in the cinema.
Among Gehring’s several books that explore humor in film are tomes on Chaplin, the Marx Brothers, Leo McCarey, Laurel and Hardy, Carole Lombard, W. C. Fields, and Frank Capra, as well as topical studies on dark comedy and screwball comedy.
Now comes Hitchcock and Humor, which evaluates the notion that the filmmaker who...

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options—not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves–each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit platforms. Check out this week’s selections below and an archive of past round-ups here.
A Burning Hot Summer (Philippe Garrel)
What makes Philippe Garrel’s films so distinct is their blend of autobiographical pain and silent-film mise-en-scène–a failed relationship or revolution rendered not so much through the increasingly dialogue-heavy scripts of his films, but the placement of bodies, gestures, and, furthermore, the dreams that contain and emerge from them. Yet while A Burning Hot Summer may be the only film he’s made in the 21st century not shot in black-and-white, once the senior Maurice Garrel (in his final role) appears as an apparition in his grandson’s hospital bed-bound vision, the personal and the fantastical have formed their most natural relationship.

Celebrated film director Sriram Raghavan, who's film 'Andhadhun' has been selected for the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (Iffm), on Saturday said that the leading lady of the film Tabu did not check every scene on the monitor after shooting and that the director always wanted to work with her.
Sharing his work experience with Tabu, Raghavan said, "I generally start thinking about the cast once the scripting is done but Tabu I had in mind even while writing the character. She was cool when I approached her. She also used to get zapped by the character while I was narrating. She is one person who doesn't look at the monitor after each and every scene. She is beyond professional and instinctive."
"I used to trip on Tabu as an actor so getting a chance to work with her and also the film doing great is nice," he added.

National Award-winning actress Divya Dutta, who has been appreciated for "Music Teacher", says she is choosing scripts wisely as the tags of "unconventional heroine" and "character actor" have finally gone from the psyche of the film fraternity.
Divya told Ians in an interview here: "Thankfully, I have managed to come out of those tags that industry people have always given me...like 'unconventional heroine' or 'character actor'.
"I understand their situation too because in our film industry, in the commercial zone, people tend to categorise talent. They can see that in some films, I am playing the lead role, so they can't call me a 'character' there... But on the other hand, when I am playing an important part in a big budget film, they see me as a character actor."

Author Caroline Young has just released a fascinating new book entitled Hitchcock’s Heroines (published by Insight Editions). It celebrates and studies the women in Hitchcock movies; their influence, semblance and iconography. What’s more, Young also examines the role costume design plays with these women, both the characters and the actresses who played them, and how they can be interpreted as far more than just ‘icy blondes’. Here we have an extract of the book exclusively for Clothes on Film:
Kim Novak’s grey suit the colour of San Francisco fog in Vertigo, Grace Kelly as the too-perfect woman in Rear Window, and Janet Leigh’s black and white sets of underwear to indicate both good and evil in Psycho – these are just some of the classic imagery of Alfred Hitchcock’s films, where the style and elegance of his leading lady was carefully planned.

Parmanu: The Story Of Pokhran
Starring John Abraham, Boman Irani, Anuja Sathe, Diana Penty
Directed by Abhishek Sharma
If good intentions made good cinema then every propaganda film by Films Division would be a classic. In the absence of a hefty grip and a budget to rev up the key sequences pertaining to the historical nucleur explosions Parmanu: The Story Of Pokhran ends up more as a fable of one man’s heroism than the saga of a nation that woke up to a nucleur dawn.
The facts are twisted into commercial shapes including a flashpoint button-on-the-fingertip climax where the film’s editor runs with breathless bravado from pillar to post trying to keep the audiences’ interest alive.
But all in vain. Parmanu is like a promised havoc that never goes beyond a wound-up whimper. The film’s opening shows the bureaucrat-hero Ashwat Rana grappling with a roomful of bored...

Recently, during the shoot of Sunny Deol’s directorial venture Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas, starring another Deol kid Karan as a debutant, was surprised by an unexpected visitor. The team was shooting at the Buddh racing circuit in Ncr, when Dharmendra arrived at the location and the moment turned intense and how!
Talking about his excitement to watch his Grandson soon on the big screen, Dharmendra said, “I was in Delhi for some work and had heard they were shooting some racing car sequences. So, I decided to drop by and watch my grandson in action. I didn’t want to disturb them at work, so I didn’t tell anyone I was coming. No one was expecting me par jaldi hi khamoshi khushi mein badal gayi. I could see the hint of tears in Sunny’s eyes. He doesn’t say much but being his father I notice.
