According to the orphanage's website, they state that "while there is no financial benefit to Casa Hogar for this movie, "We are hopeful that Blue Miracle will raise awareness and sensitivity for private Social Assistance Centers in Mexico, most of which, like ours, operate as charities without government funding."
It seems that Dennis Quaid's character, Captain Wade Malloy, is completely fictional and was invented for the film.
Bisbee's Black & Blue Fishing Tournament came to the host city of Cabo San Lucas in Mexico just five weeks after a hurricane wreaked havoc on the region. In an effort to keep the tournament alive, and to help stimulate the local economy, the Bisbee's Fish & Wildlife Conservation Fund created a "Cabo Relief Fund," and an anonymous donor pledged to pay the $5,000 entry fee for any team that agreed to hire a local boat. Because the entry fee was waived, the boys were from the child-caregiver organization Casa Hogar were able to enter the competition.
In the real instance, the team was able to subdue the large fish after a 43-minute battle. They were at Destiladeras in the Sea of Cortez using live bait and caught nothing. The water temperature was 83 degrees. They switched and put a Hi-5 Petrolero Lure on and three minutes after it was in the water they got the bite, according to the real Captain Ernie Cossio, a Cabo native and skipper of the team's vessel, the Mucho Bueno.
The colour blue features prominently in every scene, such as on clothes, interior and exterior of buildings, boats, etc.
