Stephen King is not just a prolific writer, he's a ravenous reader. Those two qualities mean that he has a strong sense for, among other storytelling talents, what makes a great antagonist. (King's favorite villains include Count Dracula and Anton Chigurh.)

The video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s (read our review Here) quickly became Blumhouse Productions’ highest-grossing movie when it reached theatres and the Peacock streaming service back in October, surpassing the likes of Split, The Invisible Man, The Black Phone, M3GAN, the recent Halloween sequel trilogy, and the Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge franchises with its haul of $295 million. So, of course, there’s a sequel coming our way, aiming for a December 5, 2025 theatrical release. Returning star Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) recently said that Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is going to be bigger and scarier than its predecessor, and now co-star Matthew Lillard (Scream) has added that the movie is going to be fan-centric and action-packed.

Exclusive: Lionsgate’s Antoine Fuqua directed Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, is moving out of next year’s Easter frame of April 18-20 and to Oct. 3, 2025. Universal is handling the overseas release of the movie which stars the King of Pop’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, in the title role.

In addition, Lionsgate has dated the Aziz Ansari comedy, Good Fortune, for Oct. 17. The pic stars Keanu Reeves and Seth Rogen. In the movie, a well meaning but rather inept angel named Gabriel (Reeves) meddles in the lives of a struggling gig worker (Ansari) and a wealthy capitalist (Rogen). Lionsgate received great laughs for the pic’s first footage at last spring’s CinemaCon.

The Graham King produced Michael is now positioned in the awards corridor next year. Previously, King’s Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, opened on Nov. 2, 2018 to $51M stateside and went on to gross $216.4M stateside and $903.6M worldwide plus four Oscar wins.

Back in 2021, Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, and director Scott Derrickson brought us an adaptation of the Joe Hill short story The Black Phone that appeared to tell a complete story that would stand on its own… but the film was made on a budget of around $16 million and earned over $160 million at the global box office. So, on October 17, 2025, we’ll be getting The Black Phone 2 – and with the release date eleven months away, Derrickson has now confirmed on social media that Black Phone 2 has started filming!

Production on ‘The Black Phone 2’ is underway, with director Scott Derrickson sharing a behind-the-scenes snapshot that hints at the chilling return of Ethan Hawke’s character, the Grabber.

The photo shows a chair marked with the film’s title, signaling the beginning of shooting. Derrickson announced the news by stating, “Shooting started today.”

The sequel promises to bring back familiar faces, including Ethan Hawke as the malevolent Grabber and Mason Thames, who will reprise his role as Finney.

The original cast members Madeleine McGraw, Miguel Mora, and Jeremy Davies are also returning, with Demián Bichir joining the chilling lineup.

Derrickson teams up again with C. Robert Cargill to bring this script to life, continuing the story inspired by Joe Hill’s original short story.

Ethan Hawke will be back as The Grabber on Scott Derrickson’s The Black Phone 2, and the filmmaker has revealed on socials that production is now underway on the upcoming sequel.

Universal and Blumhouse will release The Black Phone 2 in theaters on October 17, 2025.

Mason Thames (How to Train Your Dragon, Incoming), Madeleine McGraw (Toy Story 4, Secrets of Sulphur Springs), Jeremy Davies (Justified) and Miguel Mora (The Black Phone) also set to return alongside Hawke. Demián Bichir (The Nun) has also joined the cast.

Nowadays, we have entire feature films serving as a cameo delivery system, where "cameos" aren't brief appearances by very recognizable figures, but are actually entire supporting roles. Paramount will release “Roofman,” the upcoming film from “The Place Beyond the Pines” director Derek Cianfrance, on October 3, 2025 as part of a first look deal with Miramax, which acquired the film for distribution in the U.S. and other specific territories.

Based on a true story, the film stars Channing Tatum as Jeffrey Manchester, a former Army Ranger who falls on hard times and resorts to robbing various McDonald’s locations, earning the media nickname “Roofman” for how he carves holes in the roofs of the fast food joints to pull off his heists.

After escaping from prison, he starts a new life while hiding in a toy store, falling in love with a single mother, played by Kirsten Dunst, and her two daughters. However, his criminal past and a final robbery threaten to destroy his chance at redemption.

Peter Dinklage also stars in the film, which Cianfrance co-wrote with Kirk Gunn.

The sci-fi thriller M3GAN (read our review Here, get a copy Here) was such a financial success when it reached theatres in January of last year, it didn’t even take Universal Pictures and production companies Blumhouse and Atomic Monster two weeks to announce that they’d be re-teaming for a sequel. M3GAN 2.0, which is set to reach theatres on June 27, 2025, has already wrapped production – and producer Jason Blum and returning star Allison Williams were both at the New York Comic Con to hype the sequel up a bit. During the Blumhouse panel at Nycc, Williams said M3GAN 2.0 is bigger and more expansive than its predecessor.

Based on a story crafted by producer James Wan, M3GAN was directed by Gerard Johnstone (Housebound) from a screenplay by Akela Cooper (Malignant). Johnstone returned to the helm for the sequel, and Cooper has written the script.

The horror-comedy film series Five Nights at Freddy’s is based on the popular video game of the same name. It is set in a creepy location with haunted animatronics that come to life and wreaks havoc on the night guards and other characters.

Despite having a modest budget, the first film, which debuted in theaters in 2023, was a big blockbuster. The estimated amount of its worldwide total box office was almost $300 million, just from a budget of only $20 million. Moreover, critical reviews were not so great. It got 32% on Rotten Tomatoes, but the audience was very impressed with the film. A mammoth box office hit, this is the highest-grossing film from Blumhouse, and so it goes without saying that excitement for its sequel has skyrocketed now.

Jason Blum couldn’t reveal details today about Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 but he brought New York Comic Con attendees the poster for the sequel to last year’s highest grossing horror movie.

The first movie opened during the actors strike, day-and-date on Peacock and defied all hurdles during last fall’s marketplace. The movie based on the hit videogame was an anomaly performing equally well in theaters and on Peacock since it was a hot fan frenzied franchise. Five Night’s Freddy‘s was Peacock‘s most-watched film or series ever in its first five days, besting previous record-holders Halloween Ends, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Bel-Air and The Best Man: The Final Chapters.

Up to this point, not much has been known about The Gorge, the latest film from Sinister, The Black Phone, and Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson. Announced two years ago, it’s an Apple Original Film coming our way from Skydance Productions and has Anya Taylor-Joy (Furiosa) and Miles Teller (Top Gun: Maverick) in the lead roles – and today, IGN has revealed some information about the film, which will be released through Apple TV+ sometime in 2025. I had low expectations for Monster Summer. Based on the trailer, it comes across as a Goosebumps and Stranger Things wannabe. The movie has a cast with a few notable names past their primes in such minor roles that you wonder who cashed in a favor or two.

Then there is Mel Gibson, the controversial Hollywood legend, who elevates this adventure horror film into something worth the price of admission. Gibson’s performance single-handedly elevates Monster Summer, which could have been a cheap knockoff, into something substantive.

Not to mention, this is a family “horror” film with a surprising amount of heart.

Any horror franchise that sticks around for more than a handful of entries becomes an institution by default. And few long-running horror franchises have provided genre fans with such a rollercoaster as "V/H/S," perhaps because each movie in the series feels like an unpredictable theme park ride in its own sick, twisted, ambitious way.

The first "V/H/S" film, released in 2012, laid out the endlessly adaptable format: a horror anthology consisting of "found footage" shorts, each of them directed by a different filmmaker, with only a thin (if that) thread connecting them all. Really, each "V/H/S" segment is an excuse for a director to cut loose, to run wild, and to tell a brisk, violent, sometimes funny and sometimes disturbing tale of terror. A genial juvenile adventure that’s equal parts “The Hardy Boys” and “Goosebumps,” “Monster Summer” has Mason Thames (the principal child captive in “The Black Phone”) in considerably less-disturbing peril as a Martha’s Vineyard resident who comes to suspect witchery afoot. David Henrie’s slick exercise in lite supernatural suspense is aimed at younger viewers, though their parents may also be diverted by the cast’s elder members, including Mel Gibson, Lorraine Bracco and Kevin James. Do you remember the first scary movie you watched? To be fair, mine was Halloween, so I got an early taste of R-rated terror. However, for many, it was something like The Monster Squad, The Watcher in the Woods, or perhaps The Gate. And now, we have a fun ride with the good and spooky natured, Monster Summer. Featuring Mel Gibson, Lorraine Bracco, and Mason Thames. For Mason, who was terrific in The Black Phone (and will soon be seen in The Black Phone 2), the actor proves that he is one to watch. The actor brings heart to his performance and shines opposite Gibson.

Recently, I sat down with the two, and the legendary Mel Gibson (who we previously interviewed Here), was full of praise for his younger co-star. Both actors work especially well together, and frankly, it’s not surprising that Thames is getting a ton of work on genre projects.

It is that time of the year when we once again find ourselves on the precipice of another year of new film releases. This is when we look forward eagerly to the films scheduled for release in the coming year. There is probably likely something coming out at some point during the year that should be of interest to everyone (at least that’s what most studios are hoping). As always, there will be the usual sequels and big blockbusters set as tent-pole releases, as well as a plethora of additional titles in multiple genres to choose from. We hope you find this list of the upcoming films of 2025 and their release dates useful and that it helps you plan what you’re going to look forward to throughout the years.

Kevin Williamson’s upcoming Netflix drama series “The Waterfront” is rounding out its cast.

Variety has learned that Melissa Benoist, Jake Weary, Rafael L. Silva, Humberly González, Danielle Campbell, and Brady Hepner have all been cast as series regulars.

Additionally, Michael Gaston and Gerardo Celasco will appear as recurring guest stars, while Zach Roerig will guest star.

Finally, Marcos Siega has joined the series to direct the first two episodes. He will serve as an executive producer on the pilot.

“The Waterfront” is currently filming. The new cast members join previously announced series leads Holt McCallany and Maria Bello.

The official logline states, “Inspired by true events, ‘The Waterfront’ dives into the flawed Buckley family as their attempts to retain control of their crumbling North Carolina fishing empire drive them to increasingly dangerous means to keep themselves afloat.”

Netflix has commissioned eight episodes.

Wizards of Waverly Place actor David Henrie is back behind the camera as the director of the new movie Monster Summer, which is arriving right in time for Halloween.

Here’s a synopsis: When a mysterious force begins to disrupt their big summer fun, Noah (Thames) and his friends team up with a retired police detective (Gibson) to embark on a monstrous adventure to save their island.

Blumhouse Productions has been one of the biggest names in the horror genre for a couple of decades now, and Deadline reports that this Halloween season they’re teaming up with AMC Theatres for a special event called BlumFest, which will bring six Blumhouse movies back to the big screen in 54 cities and 150 AMC multiplexes.

The six week event begins on September 25th and will see a different Blumhouse movie screening in AMC theatres every Wednesday through the night before Halloween. BlumFest has found its lineup for this year’s Halloween season. It will kick off with the 2009 found footage feature Paranormal Activity, that will get a one-night only re-release.

Writer-director Oren Pel’s Paranormal Activity kicks off the fest on Sept. 25 in 150 AMC locations in 54 cities. It will be followed every Wednesday by a different Blumhouse movie, which will screen at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. local time, and include free poster giveaways and sneak peeks at upcoming projects.

Lights Out arrives Oct. 2. The feature was a breakout for Shazam! director David F. Sandberg, who wrote the film with Eric Heisserer. The film was not a Blumhouse release, but actually hails from Atomic Monster, the James Wan run-company that recently merged with Blumhouse.

Insidious: Chapter 2 comes a week later on Oct. 9. The feature reteamed Saw duo Wan and Leigh Whannell, who wrote the script, with Wan direting.

Hoover’s work has already proven to be a potential hit maker. Her 2016 book It Ends with Us saw a film adaptation in 2024, which proved to be a sleeper hit. The film also notably featured Blake Lively, Brandon Sklenar, and Justin Baldoni, who also served as a director.

The Black Phone is returning for a sequel!

The Blumhouse horror film premiered in 2022 and a second movie is currently in the works.

Director and co-writer Scott Derrickson will return to pen the sequel alongside C. Robert Cargill, who co-wrote the first one.

In the first movie, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, Finney Shaw, is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.

We've just learned some new information about The Black Phone 2 that many horror fans will be excited about. Academy nominee Demián Bichir has officially joined the cast of the highly anticipated sequel from Universal and Blumhouse in an undisclosed role.
