"Milla" has been awarded so many prizes it's hard to count them all....
I suggest that the future viewer see it in two parts for it is what you call an experimental movie ,an extremely demanding work , in a nutshell ,not very accessible .And its length exceeds two hours .
Anyway ,there are actually two parts you can call :before the baby, and after the childbirth . In the first part ,Milla and her boyfriend look like two immature teeenagers ;both spend their time playing ,dancing, joking ,making love ;they have no home of their own , they sleep on the back seat of their car or they squat ;we see them check the job ads once ,but they do not take it seriously ;nevertheless, after a while, he works on a trawler and she's a chambermaid in a hotel, but as far as we can see, they are temporary jobs.
Nothing prepares Milla for her role of mother ;against all odds ,she reveals herself a good mom ,very tender and her son seems to grow like any other child in spite of an absent father :a father who is featured in only one scene after the delivery in which he does not intervene.Milla breast- feeds her baby , she does everything:she cooks, she changes her baby's diaper ,she educates him(yes, she does)and she begins to work in a fruit store ;never the father's absence is blamed .
In it form,"Milla " may put off many viewers because nothing really happens :it's slices of life ;the director ,a woman, never argues or judges .Life and life only .Some kind of happy-go-lucky humdrum in the first part, some housewife routine in the second one ; no real screenplay , many scenes are certainly improvised ;in the scenes with the child, it's impossible to stick more to the subject for the child cannot be "directed" .
No dramatization , no cliché , "Milla " is one of its kind: but be warned:I say it gain, even if it were not the director's intention,it's an experimental work.
