If you perpetually mispronounced “Downton Abbey” as “Downtown Abbey,” you only have a few months to master the pronunciation of HBO’s new limited series, “Mare of Easttown” — that’s mare, like a horse, not mayor, like Ted Danson plays on “Mr. Mayor.”
During WarnerMedia’s TCA presentation on Wednesday morning, HBO announced its seven-part series starring Kate Winslet will premiere Sunday, April 18 at 10 p.m. Et. Each episode will also be available to stream on HBO Max.
Winslet, who’s also executive producing for the first time in her storied career, plays Mare Sheehan, a detective living in the titular Pennsylvania town who’s tasked with investigating a local murder under trying personal circumstances. HBO’s official synopsis dubs “Mare of Easttown” (you’ve got it now!) “an exploration into the dark side of a close community and an authentic examination of how family and past tragedies can define our present.

Florida Man, published by Penguin Random House in July, is a darkly comedic generation-spanning story about how a man decides to live his life, and how despite staying landlocked and stubbornly in one place, the world nevertheless comes to him.
It centers on Reed Crowe (Edgerton), the eponymous Florida Man. He is a middle-aged beach bum, beleaguered and disenfranchised, living on ill-gotten gains deep in the jungly heart of Florida. The Walking Dead may have—due to circumstances beyond its control—left its viewers in the lurch back in April with its yet-to-air Season 10 finale, but it seems that there’s news to be had about Season 11—casting news, specifically.
Margot Bingham has joined the cast of The Walking Dead for Season 11, reports Deadline. While the trade can’t confirm what role Bingham will play, it’s certainly worth noting that she has already been involved with the series, having voiced the role of Eugene’s (Josh McDermitt) mysterious radio chat-mate/would-be-romance, Stephanie; a fact that might lead one to presume she’s set to play the role in person, now having been properly cast.
The actress will make her Walking Dead onscreen debut in Season 11 after recent television runs on NBC medical drama New Amsterdam, Netflix Spike Lee adaptation comedy She’s Gotta Have It and CBS All Access drama One Dollar.

The first mystery of The Walking Dead Season 11 has already begun to unfold. Margot Bingham, who’s recurred on NBC’s New Amsterdam as Evie, has been tapped by the AMC drama to play… well, no one’s saying yet, according to our sister site, Deadline.
But, since the actress was heard (but never seen) during Season 10 as Stephanie, the reticent stranger on whom Eugene developed a crush after they connected over the radio, it’s probably the safest of safe bet that she’ll be playing… yeah, Stephanie. In fact, when The Walking Dead had to end its season...

CBS All Access has canceled its fact-based dark drama series, Strange Angel, after two seasons.
Strange Angel just had its proverbial wings clipped by its platform home, CBS All Access, which has canceled the historically-based, lasciviously occult, television series, leaving no room for a third season.
CBS All Access’s cancelation of Strange Angel after two seasons on the premium streaming service, as reported by THR, marks only the second time in the platform’s five-year history that an original series has been met with cancelation, with the lone precedent stemming back to its December 2018 cancelation of drama One Dollar. However, it won’t be an isolated incident, with the merger of CBS and Viacom expected to unleash a deluge of new original content for CBS All Access, which will lead to a statistically-inevitable share of casualties.

It’s no secret that Netflix isn’t keeping around shows as long as they used to. “Fourth and final season” is becoming the weird norm, leading to shorter overall series lengths. So, if the laws of energy work the same for streaming shows — that hours of content can be neither created nor destroyed — where do things go next?
Netflix is still a programming beast, but in addition to series, films, and standup specials, there’s still room for its music-related projects to grow. “Springsteen on Broadway” premiered in the waning weeks of 2018 and Beyonce’s “Homecoming” arrived like a lightning bolt in April. Those marquee partnerships are unmistakable, but last month brought a less categorizable musical offering that deserves some attention, too.

1. “The Politician” (available September 27)
Why Should I Watch? It’s Ryan Murphy’s first original series for Netflix. That’s the narrative TV enthusiasts and industry titans will be watching, more so than any high school election shenanigans, when “The Politician” debuts this month. After signing a whopping $300 million overall deal in February 2018, Murphy is rolling out his first big-ticket Netflix series, and his deal (along with more than few others) is meant to help maintain subscribers as the O.G. streaming giant faces new competition from the likes of Disney+ and Apple TV+. The size of its audience is even more important than whether or not it’s any good, but awards prospects are top of mind for this star-studded venture. During his time at FX, Murphy served as an enticing dual threat: prestige and popularity. Now, he’s got to carry that over to Netflix.
Bonus Reason: Well, the cast is pretty stacked.

From Emmy-winning writer Lena Waithe and director Melina Matsoukas, comes the Makeready-backed buzzy new film, “Queen & Slim,” which stars Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith, in her first starring feature-film role.
Joining a legacy of films such as “Bonnie and Clyde” and “Thelma & Louise,” Waithe’s “Queen & Slim” is a dramatic thriller with romantic undertones that follows a black couple (Kaluuya and Turner-Smith) on a first date who are pulled over by a police officer, who they are then forced to kill in self-defense, and must go on the run.
The official synopsis reads: “While on a forgettable first date together in Ohio, a black man and a black woman are pulled over for a minor traffic infraction. The situation escalates, with sudden and tragic results, when the man kills the police officer in self-defense. Terrified and in fear for their lives, the man, a retail employee, and the woman,...

When Lena Waithe presented the first footage of “Queen and Slim” at Cinemacon earlier this year, she called the Universal Pictures’ film “protest art.”
“It’s meant to get people talking,” Waithe said. “The film is not made to give the audience answers, but instead to ask questions and show what it looks like to be black and in love while the world is burning all around you.”
Now, audiences worldwide can see for themselves what she’s talking about in the first trailer for fall feature. Universal released the first look during the 2019 Bet Awards, which aired Sunday night.

Sturgill Simpson made his first appearance at the Grand Ole Opry in four years on Tuesday night, nodding to his Kentucky roots by playing a bluegrass set with an all-star band of pickers that included Sierra Hull on mandolin and Stuart Duncan on fiddle.
With his longtime drummer Miles Miller on a single snare, Simpson launched into “Long White Line” off 2014’s Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, offering a back-porch rendition that suggested this performance would differ greatly from the electric guitar-skronk of his last tour. The ongoing mission of Starfleet just got re-upped for another tour of duty: CBS All Access has renewed Star Trek: Discovery for Season Three. The streaming service has also announced that Michelle Paradise will join Alex Kurtzman as co-showrunner for the third season of the sci-fi series that has found its rhythm after its bumpy inaugural season.
Paradise joined the Star Trek: Discovery team as a co-executive producer in Season Two, which is also the season when Kurtzman took full command of the show after a creative team reshuffling. Kurtzman praised Paradise as a vital source of quality control and innovation for the Discovery team. “Her grasp of character and story detail, her drive and her focus have already become essential in ensuring the ‘Trek’ legacy, and her fresh perspective always keeps us looking forward.”
The renewal adds to the revival momentum of the Star Trek brand as a television franchise.

2018 is almost in the books… and it’s taking a whole lot of TV shows with it.
Between network, cable and streaming, more than a hundred shows aired their final episode this year, either due to cancellation or a pre-determined “final season.” The small-screen casualties ranged from long-running hits (Scandal, Once Upon a Time) to critically adored gems (The Americans, The Last Man on Earth) to… shows we barely knew existed, frankly (what’s One Dollar again?). But as dedicated TV fans, each cancellation hurts us at least a little — and this is how we process our pain.

CBS All Access has given out a straight-to-series order to the true-crime series “Interrogation,” Variety has learned.
The series is based on a true story that spanned more than 30 years, in which a young man was charged and convicted of brutally murdering his mother. Each episode is structured around an interrogation taken directly from the real police case files. The first nine episodes of the series will be available to watch in any order, while the season finale will be released at a later date.
The series was co-created by Anders Weidemann and John Mankiewicz. Both will serve as executive producers alongside Fabrik Entertainment’s Henrik Bastin and Melissa Aouate. CBS Television Studios will produce along with Fabrik.

“One Dollar” is not a show that has an easy, recent analogue to anything in the film and TV world. For the director behind the CBS All Access drama, that was both an exciting prospect and a bit of an indictment of the kinds of stories that have made it to screens in recent decades.
“When we started referencing other movies that are telling a story like this, they’re all like ‘Norma Rae,’ ‘Blue Collar.’ They’re all ’70s stories. People haven’t been making very many stories in that culture in a while actually,” director Craig Zobel told IndieWire.
What came from the process was a 10-episode season set in the western Pennsylvania town of Braden. Set against the backdrop of a mysterious death at a steel mill, the resulting story winds its way through a factory town kaleidoscope of individuals, all via the path of a single dollar bill.

CBS All Access has given a straight-to-series order to Why Women Kill, a darkly comedic drama from Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry, Imagine Television Studios and CBS TV Studios.
Created by Cherry, Why Women Kill details the lives of three women living in three different decades: a housewife in the ‘60s, a socialite in the ‘80s and a lawyer in 2018, each dealing with infidelity in their marriages. “As much as we like to think that the institution of marriage has evolved over the past few decades, infidelity still has the ability to rock us to our core. Why Women Kill will explore what happens when women’s primal instincts are unleashed with unexpected and twisted consequences,” said Cherry. “I couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with two exceptional companies...
