Brian Jordan Alvarez is one of the most interesting voices in comedy. The general public likely recognizes him as Estéfan in "Will & Grace," Wesley in "Jane the Virgin," or Cole in "M3GAN," but real ones know that he's the brilliant mind behind the Gotham Award-nominated five-part web comedy series "The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo" ... and, if you've spent any time on TikTok, his hit viral universe of filterface characters like Tj Mack. Now, Alvarez serves as the creator, executive producer, and star of the FX workplace comedy "English Teacher," the best new comedy of 2024 and the rare show that manages to tackle Gen Z without sounding like it was written by a bunch of dinosaurs who still ask their nephews to help them open PDFs.

Streaming services continue to rule the world of entertainment – and we’re not complaining! The more the merrier, am I right? But shouldn’t we also prioritize quality over quantity? I think so! And that's why we're Show Snobs. That said, not every single show out right now is worth watching. So we're here to help! Which series have you not been able to get enough of these days? Is it one of the shows that made it to this week’s top 10? There’s only one way to find out!
It’s not surprising at all to find Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power as the No. 1 most-watched series on streaming. Not only did it only recently premiere its second season, but it has had a massive following since it arrived. Mostly thanks to the movie franchise, sure, but it’s also a truly brilliant adventure.

High school has been a reliable TV sitcom setting since the days of Welcome Back, Kotter, but the situation in American schools is so fraught these days, it’s not exactly a laugh riot. FX, which is about to say goodbye to one of its comedies, is adding another to its lineup.
The Disney-owned outlet has handed a series order to Snowflakes, an ensemble comedy about “a group of codependent housemates trying to be good people, despite being neither ‘good’ nor ‘people’ yet,” as the show’s logline puts it.
The series, for which FX ordered a pilot in January, comes from FX Productions and writers Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw (The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon). Nick Kroll (who has a first-look deal with FX Productions), Baskets co-creator Jonathan Krisel and Atlanta and What We Do in the Shadows alum Stefani Robinson are among the executive producers. Malik Elassal, Lucy Freyer, Jack Innanen, Amita Rao and Owen Thiele play the five twentysomething housemates.
“We are excited about the exceptional cast and powerhouse comedy team we’ve assembled for Snowflakes,” said FX Entertainment president Nick Grad.

After spending recent years suited up in the comic book world of the Arrowverse, Caity Lotz’s latest project is ripped from today’s headlines. There are, of course, twists and trunks along the way. Armstrong was ultimately found guilty of shooting Wilson and sentenced to 90 years in prison. Vanna White will reportedly be missing from Wheel of Fortune for the first time in over 30 years amid contract negotiations following host Pat Sajak‘s forthcoming retirement. During Wheel of Fortune’s “Teachers Week” block filmed in late July, White is said to have caught Covid, Puck News reports. Instead of postponing shooting while White recuperated, show bosses are said to have used California-based “Teacher of the Year” recipient Bridgette Donald-Blue to fill in as letter turner. The episodes will likely air in October. Bridgette Donald-Blue LinkedIn The decision has come as White’s contract negotiations have heated up as she seeks her first salary increase in almost 20 years. Palestinian-British filmmaker Farah Nabulsi’s upcoming drama “The Teacher,” which is shot and set in Palestine’s West Bank, has been acquired by top Italian indie distributor Eagle Pictures just as Vincent Maraval’s Goodfellas launches sales on the timely title in Cannes.
Goodfellas, formerly known as Wild Bunch, on Thursday will be presenting to buyers the almost completed film that takes its cue from a real prisoners swap that took place in 2011 when Israel freed more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for one soldier who had been kidnapped by Palestinian militants.
In “The Teacher” a Palestinian school teacher played by Saleh Bakri struggles to reconcile his commitment to political resistance with his emotional support for one of his students. There is also a subplot involving his romantic relationship with a British volunteer worker, played by Imogen Poots (“The Father”).

This piece contains spoilers for "The Last of Us," as well as discussions of sexual abuse.
HBO's adaptation of "The Last of Us" has not been afraid of getting dark with its reinterpretation of Naughty Dog's original game. While never going totally overboard and into cruelty for the sake of cruelty, it has been able to use its instances of disturbing violence to drive home its central point -- that morality in times of crisis isn't black and white.
To a certain extent, its latest episode, "When We Are In Need," follows this same thread. After recovering from a nasty stab wound, Joel (Pedro Pascal) tortures and kills two men, even after obtaining useful information from them, just to get back to Ellie (Bella Ramsey). While he did it for an understandable reason, Joel has once again crossed a moral line that he probably can never uncross. There is...

Some unexpected winners at the SAG Awards could potentially shake up the Oscar race with less than a month until the show.
“On Sunday night, SAG’s top film award, best ensemble, was won by Coda, Apple’s moving dramedy about a family of four, three of whom are deaf and the fourth of whom is hearing. The cast of Coda — the first primarily deaf cast ever to win this honor — held off the casts of fellow best picture Oscar nominees Belfast, Don’t Look Up, and King Richard, as well as House of Gucci, and was very warmly received in the room.”

Sidney Poitier, the noble leading man whose work in such films as No Way Out, Lilies of the Field and In the Heat of the Night paved the way for minority actors and actresses everywhere, has died. He was 94.
Poitier died Thursday night at his home in Beverly Hills, a rep for his family told The Hollywood Reporter.
Poitier was the first Black man to win an Academy Award for best actor when he was acknowledged for his portrayal of a good-hearted handyman for Arizona nuns in Lilies of the Field (1963).
He received an earlier best actor nomination for his turn as a convict on the run in The Defiant Ones (1958).
In 2002, he received an honorary Oscar from the Academy “for his extraordinary performances and unique presence on the screen and for representing the motion picture industry with dignity, style and intelligence throughout the world.”

The Professor has come up with brilliant ideas to get out of tight jams for four seasons on the Spanish crime drama Money Heist. But when Netflix’s wildly popular series (also known as La Casa
de Papel) roared back Friday with the first half of its highly anticipated Season 5, everyone’s favorite mastermind seemed at a loss.
If his momentary confusion is to be believed, the Professor never anticipated disgraced inspector Alicia Sierra to get the jump on him. He also never thought the merciless pregnant woman would chain him up, torture him and shoot him in the left foot — but she did.

"My professor is missing..." Integrity is opening this B-movie direct-to-vod next week if you want to watch it - Final Frequency, directed by the filmmaker Tom Lowry. A PhD student ties unusual tremors to rogue scientists, who will weaponize Nikola Tesla's secrets and cause massive earthquakes, if they can only find his lost notebook. The sci-fi thriller indie film follows a band of misfits as they work to thwart rogue scientists who are using Tesla's most secret formulas to create the "Mother of all Earthquakes" and collapse downtown Los Angeles during the G-20 World Summit. Described as a "fast-paced and fun adventure inspired by the legend of Nikola Tesla's lost journals." This looks as terrible as it sounds, but that's exactly what makes it an entertaining B-movie. I guess...? The film stars Kirby Bliss Blanton, Lou Ferrigno Jr., Richard Burgi, Charles Shaughnessy, Kim Estes, and Nicolas Alexandre. Try to...

Heads up, Golden Globe fans: Wednesday morning’s slew of nominations will honor the best TV shows of 2020, which means programs that aired during the 2019 calendar year are ineligible. So what’s predicted to win Best Limited Series/TV Movie now?
According to our Golden Globe predictions, “The Queen’s Gambit,” “Unorthodox,” “The Undoing,” “Mrs. America” and “Normal People” will be the five series nominees. Three other programs have better than 100/1 odds: “Small Axe,” “I May Destroy You” and “The Good Lord Bird.” There’s still time to make or update your Globe predix before the nominations are announced on February 3, so get to it!

Each episode of FX on Hulu’s A Teacher is preceded by a content warning I’ve never seen before: It warns about “sexual situations,” but also “depictions of grooming that may be disturbing.” And it’s needed, too, because A Teacher — debuting Tuesday, Nov. 10; I’ve seen all ten episodes — is certainly disturbing, depicting a sexual relationship between a high school teacher and a student in unprecedentedly graphic detail for a TV series. There are plenty of awesome movies already available to stream on Netflix, but today sees the arrival of a great flick from 2011 that’s at least worth a weekend viewing for comedy fans. Even better, it stars a retired actress that we all truly miss on the big screen.
Cameron Diaz’s Bad Teacher is a raunchy flick that follows a lazy woman who gets dumped by her rich fiancé and is forced to return to her old career as a middle school teacher so that she can afford breast implants. Unfortunately for the school and her students, though, she’s indifferent to the job itself, and her selfish antics create chaos for everyone who crosses her path.
Bad Teacher only has a 44% on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating that it’s not Diaz’s best work. But rest assured that while the film may not make its way up your favorite movies list,...
