It’s giving Coen Brothers, That’s the immediate vibe of “Greedy People,” a new crime comedy from director Potsy Ponciroli (the revisionist Wester “Old Henry”) and playwright and screenwriter Michael Vukadinovich (“Kidding”). Everyone wants to be the Coens at one point in their life, and sure, it’s a big goal to aspire to, and it’s ostensibly entertaining to cast Tim Blake Nelson as a familiar yokel.

It’s a practical joke to ask a screenwriter to write about anxiety.
The very nature of the occupation is to walk around constantly asking yourself: What’s the worst thing that could possibly happen in this moment? To this character? To someone the character loves? To someone I love? To me?
But there’s a special kind of anxiety that comes with writing the sequel to a beloved film like Inside Out. Aside from the many accolades bestowed on it — it’s a perfect film with an Oscar-nominated screenplay — it’s also my personal favorite Pixar movie.
It had been a dream of mine to write at Pixar. Six years ago I had interviewed with director Dan Scanlon to write Onward, but the timing didn’t work out when Showtime greenlit my Jim Carrey-starring series Kidding. Now, here I was again, passing beneath the giant Luxo lamp, getting...

Florence Pugh is back in Marvel movie mode and shared to Instagram a first look set video from the Atlanta studio where “Thunderbolts” is now in production. The tentpole will mark Pugh’s latest appearance as the assassin Yelena Belova, a role she debuted as in “Black Widow” and reprised on the Disney+ series “Hawkeye.” The set video includes a first look at one of Yelena’s combat-ready suits in the film. Pugh is also sporting some blue eyeliner.
“Hey guys, how are you doing? I know I’ve dropped off for a little bit, but that’s partially because I was whisked off to Atlanta to shoot a movie that I’m not really supposed to talk about,” Pugh told her followers in the video. “But I can show you things, sneakily, as long as you don’t tell anyone…I can show you a sneak peek of the set.

Michel Gondry is about to make a lot of people happy, teaming with Pharrell Williams, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and recent Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph for Atlantis, a new film that is partly inspired by Williams’ upbringing.
While no plot details have been unveiled, according to Deadline, Atlantis is “a coming-of-age musical, set in 1977 Virginia Beach, which draws inspiration from Williams’ childhood growing up in the city’s Atlantis Apartments.” In addition to Gondry signed on as director, screenwriters on board are Toy Story 4’s Martin Hynes and Tick, Tick…Boom’s Steven Levenson.
Atlantis was revealed back in 2017. While Hynes was attached even as far back as then, originally Michael Mayer – who won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical for Spring Awakening – was set to direct.

Lionsgate has acquired domestic rights to the Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lily James and Himesh Patel comedy “Greedy People.”
The film explores what happens when the eccentric residents of a small, picturesque island town are faced with a sensational murder and the discovery of $1 million next to the body. This sparks a series of increasingly bad decisions that do a number on the peace and tranquility of the community.
“’Greedy People’ is a hugely entertaining crime thriller in every way,” said Allison Lynch, Lionsgate’s director of acquisitions and co-productions. “Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lily James, and Himesh Patel lead an incredible cast through twists and turns that range from the hilarious to the horrific – and the movie always keeps you guessing.”
The film’s starry ensemble also features Uzo Aduba (“Orange is the New Black”), Tim Blake Nelson (“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs”), Jim Gaffigan (“Chappaquiddick”) and Simon Rex (“Red Rocket”).

Rapper Vince Staples plays a semi-fictionalized version of himself in “The Vince Staples Show,” debuting today on Netflix. The comedy, which skewers celebrity culture and depicts Staples’ surreal adventures, comes after roles in the films “Dope” and “White Boys Can’t Jump” and series like “Insecure” and “Abbott Elementary.”
Your character’s relationship with money is an important theme of the show. Why did you want to explore that?
It’s a big part of what we deem to be celebrity, and it’s extremely subjective. You ask a lot of people who know me personally, and I’m hyper-successful and I’ve made it to the upper echelon. But most people who live in the world don’t know who Vince Staples is. I think that’s a very interesting thing as far as how we perceive success or fame.
Many of the episodes start in reality but take surreal turns.

Eliza Skinner had no idea that her Disney+ series Earth to Ned would be permanently taken off the platform until a text on the show’s writer group chat in mid-May shared an article about Disney removing more than 70 films and series from its streaming services that month. Among the disappearing titles was the comedic talk show — which launched in 2020 with Skinner as head writer — centering on an alien welcoming celebrities to his spaceship.
Due to its classification as a streaming variety series, Skinner says the writers and performers weren’t receiving residuals, although the show’s team had heard rumors blaming Disney’s tax bill. But while her loss isn’t a financial one, Earth to Ned can no longer serve as a calling card to help land future gigs for Skinner, who also doesn’t own a physical copy of the show.

One of the most delightful experiences at this year’s Cannes Film Festival was Michel Gondry’s dramatic comedy The Book of Solutions, from the Directors Fortnight sidebar. The director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Be Kind Rewind stayed away from the big screen for eight long years after the painful failure of the sloppy melodrama Mood Indigo (2013) followed with his next low budget comedy Microbe & Gasoline (2015). His only project from the past few years was an incredibly witty, heartfelt TV series called "Kidding" with Jim Carrey as Mr. Pickles, a quirky riff on Mr. Rogers. Gondry's new feature film, Le Livre des Solutions, depicts the ultimate turmoil of the moviemaking process – accumulating all of his passion, frustration & fears in a lighthearted, ironic way underlined by the usual melancholic for which he is known. // Continue Reading ›...

He’s an Oscar winner for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and beloved worldwide for his uniquely lo-fi, handmade aesthetic — a highly imaginative and visual DNA that has been liberally scattered across several decades of work, from music videos (think Daft Punk’s seminal Around the World) to commercials (such as the multi-award-winning Levi’s Drugstore), short films (including One Day, in which he’s chased out of toilet cubicle by David Cross dressed as a giant turd), documentaries (the Noam Chomsky starrer Is the Man Who Is Tall Happy?) and features (the delightful Be Kind, Rewind).
Although Michel Gondry is rarely not pouring his creativity into something (he recently turned to TV with the Jim Carrey-starring Kidding), the so-called Crown Prince of Whimsy’s feature output has been considerably less prolific of late, with his last coming in 2015 (the abundantly whimsical Microbe and Gasoline). It was only a matter of time before these words ended up in a sentence together: Kim Kardashian will be joining the 12th season of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's long-running anthology, "American Horror Story." A collaboration between the man who explores fame, camp, luxury, and what captures America's attention, and the woman who has captured America's attention better than anyone else feels so natural, that it's surprising it hasn't happened sooner.
Kardashian posted a teaser promo to her Instagram account today announcing the collaboration. In the promo, you can hear the sound of children playing along with a slow, eerie rendition of "Rock-a-bye Baby." An enigmatic, slowly revealed tagline reads: "Emma Roberts and Kim Kardashian are delicate." Roberts is an "American Horror Story" veteran who played the witch Madison Montgomery in the seasons titled "Coven" and "Apocalypse," and appeared as other characters in the anthology along the way.

Van Dyke was pulled from the vehicle, having not realised the Jaguar was on fire on a Los Angeles highway.
He told TMZ at the time: “It just started making a noise, and I thought I had a flat at first,...

Get ready to paint some happy little trees with Bob R -- er, Carl Nargle. The latest trailer for the upcoming Owen Wilson film "Paint" just dropped, and the new movie seems to be doing for kitschy PBS painter Bob Ross what Showtime's "Kidding" did for Mr. Rogers. Namely, "Paint" centers on the behind-the-scenes turmoil in the life of a beloved, sweet public figure who played a formative role in the lives of several generations. In this case, the subject is a Ross-like character named Carl, played by Wilson in a permed wig. Armed with a paintbrush and a dulcet voice, Carl takes the world by storm with his paint-a-long programming.
"Paint" comes via IFC Films and is the narrative feature directorial debut for Brit McAdams, who also wrote the film. "Casual" actor Michaela Watkins, "Barry" supporting player Stephen Root (who's having a big day for trailers), "The Goldbergs" star Wendi McLendon-Covey,...

Paramount Global CFO Naveen Chopra signaled during an investor conference on Feb. 28 that the entertainment giant could spend less on streaming content in 2024 than previously forecast due to the integration of Paramount+ and Showtime. He also touted the opportunity to “reinvigorate the Showtime content slate” and the Paramount studio’s “killer movie slate” this year.
Speaking at the Deutsche Bank Media, Internet and Telecom Conference in Palm Beach, Fla. in a session that was webcast, he was asked about the studio lineup for the current year. “It’s a killer slate,” he said, adding that it looked even better than the one that delivered a strong 2022, led by Top Gun: Maverick. The slate includes new Mission: Impossible, Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Paw Patrol movies, as well as Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Creatives are burning with rage over Hollywood’s hottest new trend: streaming platforms’ habit of canceling finished films and TV series before they’ve aired or pulling projects from platforms and shelving them indefinitely.
The Hollywood Reporter has been asking around about the effects of consolidation, budget cuts and tax write-offs kneecapping projects like Batgirl, Snowpiercer, Scoob!: Holiday Haunt and Westworld, among others. It’s happening all over town as entertainment companies have been forced to contend with consolidation, inflation, a possible recession and a constant chase for subscribers.
“It’s been horrifying,” prolific creator Rian Johnson (Glass Onion) tells THR. “The fact that it’s becoming common practice is terrible and adds to the awfulness. In the history of the business, there has been a constant evolution of horrible things.”
Last month, THR reported that two Netflix feature films were up for grabs after the streamer opted not to distribute the films.

Paramount Global reached more than 77 million streaming subscribers worldwide as of the end of 2022, up from 67 million as of the end of September, as Paramount+ posted a record quarterly user gain, the Hollywood giant said Thursday. However, higher streaming investments were a drag on the entertainment company’s bottom line, and TV unit advertising sales dropped.
Paramount, led by CEO Bob Bakish, reported that its Paramount+ streamer hit nearly 56 million subscribers as of the end of the year, after adding a company-record 9.9 million subs compared with the 46 million recorded as of the end of September, driven by such popular content as blockbuster movie Top Gun: Maverick.
“Subscriber growth was driven by a strong content slate, including the NFL, the expansion of existing franchises like Top Gun: Maverick and 1923, the success of new franchises like Tulsa King and Smile, as well as CBS’ overall entertainment slate,” the company said. “Internationally,...

Only 10 episodes of The Gordita Chronicles were produced before HBO Max canceled the comedy last summer amid a pullback on live-action kids and family programming. But at least creator Claudia Forestieri felt good knowing that new viewers could still find the show on the streamer.
“I got several DMs from people who saw it in-flight on American Airlines, where a few episodes are still available, and they ended up finishing the season on HBO Max,” Forestieri told Deadline.
But the consolation prize of keeping the show on the platform was short-lived: less than five months after The Gordita Chronicles was canceled, all 10 episodes were removed as part of a library purge that impacted dozens of programs on HBO Max.
At least Forestieri wasn’t alone in getting the boot. In the last few months, scores of shows have been yanked from various platforms, including Westworld, Raised By Wolves, The Time Traveler’s Wife,...

Uncoupled has found a new home following its cancellation on Netflix.
Deadline reported Friday that the Neil Patrick Harris comedy had scored a surprise pickup at Showtime.
The news comes amid a strategic shift at the premium cabler, which recently announced plans to become Paramount+ with Showtime.
As a result, much of the network's content is set to change.
Showtime canceled American Gigolo, Let the Right One In, and the new drama Three Women (despite never airing a single episode).
Several ended shows were also purged in the process, with shows like Kidding removed entirely.
It's unclear whether the purged shows will return somewhere else down the line.
Showtime also recently announced plans to expand the Dexter and Billions franchises.
As many as four spinoffs of the latter are in the works -- including Millions and Trillions.
For Dexter, we're getting a prequel called Dexter: Origin, a second chapter of Dexter: New Blood,...

Three years ago, an adaptation of Lisa Taddeo’s novel Three Women ignited a bidding war before landing at Showtime with what sources say at the time was one of the biggest deals the premium cable network had ever made. Today, the drama starring Shailene Woodley that was eyed for a 2022 debut jumped to rival network Starz as Showtime — now part of Chris McCarthy’s sprawling purview at Paramount Global — pivots toward the Yellowstone franchise model that has driven viewers to Paramount+.
In a Jan. 30 memo to staff outlining a rebranding of the pay cable network to “Paramount+ With Showtime,” McCarthy (who oversees Paramount Network, MTV and Comedy Central, among others) pointed to “turning our hit shows into global hit franchises” and integrating the brand’s content into the premium tier of Paramount+ With Showtime. In August 2022, amidst a bevy of other cost-cutting but callous decisions, Warner Brothers Discovery began removing shows and movies from HBO Max that couldn't be found anywhere else. It wasn't subtle; dozens of titles disappeared across the course of the month, including "Vinyl," which was created by Martin Scorsese, "Mrs. Fletcher," starring Kathryn Hahn, and an inordinate amount of animated and kids' shows. The streamer didn't stop there, though. By December, one of its former flagship shows, "Westworld," was gone, along with a total of 80 other movies and series according to IndieWire.
Even as creators began speaking openly about the broken trust between artists and a powerhouse network that was once known for letting creativity thrive, other streamers were already following in HBO Max's footsteps. In September, news broke that the Eli Roth-produced series "Hemlock Grove," which stars Bill Skarsgård as a rich kid vampire, would be leaving the...

Over the past few months, we’ve seen an increasing number of streaming companies remove original content from their services. Deadline reports that Paramount+ is the latest service to remove titles from their platform, which includes Jordan Peele’s reboot of The Twilight Zone.

Paramount+ has followed other streamers like HBO Max in removing some of its original programming off the platform, including the likes of Jordan Peele’s “The Twilight Zone” reboot and “The Real World: Homecoming New York.” The news comes two days after Paramount announced that Showtime would be undergoing a rebrand and merging with Paramount+’s premium service later this year.
Other titles no longer showing up on the platform include “Coyote,” “No Activity,” “Guilty Party” and “The Harper House.” “The Twilight Zone,” which was canceled after two seasons, was a project from the now-defunct CBS All Access (later rebranded to Paramount+). The removal of “Homecoming,” a spinoff to the reality series “The Real World” that aired for three decades on MTV, is more unclear given that the series had yet to receive a formal cancellation.

Days after Showtime, which is currently merging with Paramount+, pulled multiple titles from their platform, the streaming service has followed suit.
Jordan Peelee’s “The Twilight Zone,” which aired for two seasons between 2019 and 2020 before being canceled, has been removed, along with all three seasons of “The Real World: Homecoming.” Other projects no longer available include “Coyote,” “No Activity,” “Guilty Party” and “The Harper House.”
“The Real World: Homecoming,” which launched in 2021 with the New York cast, returned for two more seasons, reuniting the casts of Los Angeles and New Orleans. Yesterday in a memo to employees, Showtime and Paramount Media Networks President and CEO Chris McCarthy said the newly-merging brands will "divert investment away from areas that are underperforming and that account for less than 10 of our views." In a move that is disappointing but not surprising, it turns out the company's cost-cutting measures involve not just canceling shows but also purging them entirely from streaming. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a number of TV series have already been pulled from the Showtime streaming platform, which is set to be renamed Paramount+ with Showtime.
Among the shows that have reportedly disappeared are the unique and imaginative Jim Carrey project "Kidding" and the Kirsten Dunst-led dark comedy "On Becoming A God in Central Florida," both of which were critically acclaimed. On Jan. 30, Paramount Global became the latest Hollywood conglomerate to revamp its streaming setup and strategy, unveiling a sweeping combination of the Paramount+ streaming service and Showtime.
The move will also bring changes to programming — originals like Kidding, Super Pumped and American Rust, among others, were removed from the Showtime platform — and likely additional layoffs as Paramount CEO Bob Bakish acknowledged “uncertainty for the teams working on these brands and businesses.”
Wall Street analysts took stock of the plans, weighing in on Paramount’s streaming business in broader terms. As reported yesterday, Showtime has been cleaning house as it goes through a rebranding process with Paramount+. The Hollywood Reporter gives an extended list of the Showtime originals getting canceled. Along with original programing of American Gigolo and Let The Right One In, more titles like Jim Carrey’s comedy, Kidding, as well as Kirsten Dunst’s On Becoming a God in Central Florida have been given the axe with the likes of Super Pumped and American Rust. While these shows were already not getting additional seasons, they’ve been removed from the service entirely, which is a shame. Some, such as Super Pumped, were limited series and presumably evergreen.

Showtime viewers have complained after a number of series were reportedly pulled from the US network’s streaming platform.
On Monday (30 January), it was also announced that Showtime was being integrated into Paramount’s main brand, and will be known going forward as Paramount+ With Showtime.
Among the original series to have been removed from the streaming service, per The Hollywood Reporter, are crime series American Gigolo, vampire drama Let the Right one In, and Kidding, starring Jim Carrey.
On Becoming a God in Central Florida and American Rust were also taken down from Showtime’s catalogue.
Showtime has seemingly become the latest platform to take advantage of the tax write-downs available for shows that have been removed from their catalogue.
Companies such as HBO Max have faced criticism from fans and creators for removing underperforming films and TV shows from their streaming catalogues, in order to maximise tax benefits.

The purge of some of Showtime’s less popular series from the network’s streaming service has gotten underway. According to sources, the majority of the shows impacted lasted one season. As Deadline revealed exclusively earlier today, that includes Let The Right One In and American Gigolo, which have been canceled. Additionally, in the process of being taken off are American Rust, Wakefield, and On Becoming a God In Central Florida, which also ran for one season each, as well as the Jim Carrey starrer Kidding, which produced two seasons, sources said.
The removals are part of Showtime’s integration into Paramount+, announced earlier today, which includes the linear network being renamed Paramount+ with Showtime later this year. As part of the changes, the company will “divert investment away from areas that are underperforming” and that accounts for “less than 10 of our views,” Chris McCarthy, who oversees Showtime, said in his memo.

Showtime has pulled several series from its streaming platform, becoming the latest banner to parse down its digital library in the past year. Sources close to the situation share that most removed titles will have the opportunity to sell to third-parties.
Among the removals are “American Gigolo” and “Let the Right One In,” both of which were not renewed for a second season, as announced by Showtime just earlier Monday afternoon. Both seasons of the Jim Carrey-starring “Kidding” are also no longer available to watch on the platform, as well as the single-season series “American Rust” and “On Becoming a God in Central Florida.”
The first season of “Super Pumped” has also been removed. The business anthology series had been renewed in Feb. 2022, with plans for a second season to focus on the history of Facebook. However, few updates have emerged on the project in the months since.

We’re not kidding about this news: The Jim Carrey dramedy Kidding is among several Showtime series that have been removed from the pay-cable network’s streaming platforms, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
In addition to Kidding, which wrapped up a two-season run in 2020, the Kirsten Dunst dark comedy On Becoming a God in Central Florida and the Jeff Daniels cop drama American Rust are no longer available to stream on Showtime’s streaming service. Also gone: American Gigolo and Let the Right One In, both of which were cancelled earlier today by Showtime after one season each. Season 1 of the business-world anthology Super Pumped,...

Add Showtime to the list of outlets who are pulling content from their streaming platforms.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the Paramount Global-backed cabler has pulled a number of short-lived, under-performing shows from its streaming platform. The list includes American Gigolo and Let the Right One In — both of which were canceled earlier Monday — as well as Jim Carrey vehicle Kidding, the first season of anthology Super Pumped, On Becoming a God in Central Florida and American Rust. Also vanishing from the Showtime streaming platform are seasons of acquired content including The End and Wakefield. Additional shows are likely included in the mass removal.
Reps for Showtime did not immediately respond to THR’s request for comment.
The news comes hours after Showtime parent Paramount Global announced that the linear premium cable network and the premium version of Paramount+ would both be rebranded later this year as Paramount+ on Showtime.
