After doing a lot of work in the comedy genre – Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The State, Viva Variety, Upright Citizens Brigade, Wet Hot American Summer, Reno 911!, Superbad, Pineapple Express, Paul, Role Models, Wanderlust, I Love You, Man… the list is long – Joe Lo Truglio has decided to make his feature directorial debut with a horror film called Outpost. Gravitas Ventures gave the film a theatrical and VOD release in the US back in May (you can find it on Amazon at This Link), and now Lightbulb Film Distribution has announced that they’ll be bringing Outpost to the UK and Ireland on September 11th with a digital and VOD release. The movie will then be given the same sort of release in Australia and New Zealand on September 13th.
Also scripted by Lo Truglio, Outpost has the following synopsis: After a violent assault, a woman asks her best friend for help escaping an abusive ex.

Production officially began this month in the U.K. on Season 2 of Netflix’s “The Witcher,” the streaming service announced today. The series was renewed for an eight-episode second season — planned to be released in 2021 — a month before its December 2019 release.
Based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s books (which were also adapted into a popular video game series), “The Witcher” tells the story of Geralt of Rivia, the eponymous witcher, who travels from town to town accepting missions in exchange for “coin.” The first season of Netflix’s “The Witcher” proved to be a success for the streaming platform, as it was reportedly viewed by 76 million households within the first four weeks of its release. That makes for a lot of individuals getting “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher” stuck in their head.

Production on fantasy epic “The Witcher” Season 2 has commenced in the U.K., with a planned launch in 2021, Netflix announced.
The show also announced seven new cast members joining “The Witcher” for S2, including Kristofer Hivju, the Norwegian actor who played the red-bearded wilding leader Tormund Giantsbane on “Game of Thrones.”
Netflix last month claimed “The Witcher” Season 1 was tracking to be its biggest original TV series debut to date. However, that’s according to a new metric invented by the company that found 76 million member households watched at least 2 minutes of the show in the first four weeks after its Dec. 20 release.
The streamer renewed “The Witcher” for Season 2 last fall with an eight-episode order, more than a month before the freshman season hit the streaming service. The show represents “a massive new franchise that we’ll develop season after season,” Netflix chairman/CEO Reed Hastings said on the...

A lot of headlines have been made with the relationship between Adam Sandler and Netflix. But on a much smaller scale, we should also talk about the streaming service’s relationship with one of the best actresses working today, Toni Collette. Sure, let’s not forget that the best role of her career, in “Hereditary,” was not a Netflix production, but over the past several years, Collette has shown up in a ton of streaming content, including “Unbelievable,” “Wanderlust,” “Velvet Buzzsaw,” and the upcoming “I’m Thinking of Ending Things.” And now, she’s extending that relationship even further with “Pieces of Her.”
According to Deadline, Collette has agreed to star in the upcoming Netflix series “Pieces of Her.” The series, based on the best-selling novel by author Karin Slaughter, stars Collette as Laura,...

Karen Fairchild’s son has a question for his mom: “Is soundcheck finished?”
“Not yet babe, I wish,” says Fairchild, standing onstage at Carnegie Hall, where her band Little Big Town have been running through vocal arrangements and stage directions for a performance that evening. “It’s almost done,” she reassures her child, who’s been patiently waiting in the otherwise eerily empty esteemed theater. Back in late 2018, it was reported that Warner Bros. was developing a solo movie for Zatanna. Since then, however, there’ve been no official announcements about who could helm the film or star in it. We Got This Covered has been keeping you up to date with WB’s plans for the sorceress, though, and we can confirm they’re still moving forward with it. In fact, our last update came in September, when we reported that the studio was eyeing up Emilia Clarke for the role.
According to our sources though – the same ones who said Diana will get her Golden Eagle armor in Wonder Woman 1984 and that Kevin Conroy was playing Kingdom Come Batman in “Crisis” – Clarke is no longer in the picture to play Zatanna as she’s reportedly passed on the part. Given that, they’re now looking in a different direction for the character. And...

If you’ve been enjoying Geralt of Rivia’s fantastical adventures during the first season of The Witcher, know that you’re not alone. Far from it, in fact.
Dropped onto Netflix last week amidst a groundswell of hype and excitement, the show is fast becoming one of the streaming giant’s most lucrative license acquisitions. Both critics and Netflix subscribers have been reacting extremely positively so far, praising the stellar fight choreography and excellent performances, with particular attention being given to Henry Cavill, who headlines the series as the aforementioned Geralt.
Indeed, the Superman actor is one of the many highlights of The Witcher and it seems he took his job very seriously, even dehydrating himself to look good for some of the scenes that required him to go shirtless. That’s not to say he completely cut water out of his diet, but he seriously lowered the amount he consumed,...

Only eight days away from the series’ release, Netflix dropped the final trailer for its highly anticipated eight-episode first season of “The Witcher.”
Best on Andrzej Sapkowski’s bestselling fantasy series of books, “The Witcher” stars Henry Cavill (“Justice League”) as monster hunter Geralt of Rivia, Freya Allan (“The War of the Worlds”) as the young princess Cirilla and Anya Chalotra (“Wanderlust”) as the sorceress Yennefer. The adaptation will follow these three characters’ intertwined destinies in the vast world of The Continent, where humans, elves, witchers, gnomes and monsters battle, and where good and evil is not easily identified.
The final trailer reveals the first season’s likely central conflict. Nilfgaard, the most powerful empire in the fantasy world, has targeted the land of Cintra and its princess, Cirilla. Of course, the only person who can protect her is Cavill’s Geralt.
“I will take the girl,” Geralt says in the trailer.

The Film Experience had the pleasure of a lengthy one-on-one chat with the inimitable Toni Collette yesterday after a screening and reception for her new horror classic Hereditary. We'll publish the whole interview in a few days but we thought we'd share a tidbit she thoughtfully e-mailed afterwards. You see during our chat, we had mentioned that they (the proverbial they) always say that actors are an insecure lot but this couldn't possibly be true of her. Wouldn't you have to be supremely confident about your gifts to attack high-wire material like Hereditary or the new miniseries Wanderlust? If you stop to think about it both of those provocative projects, one about multi-generational family trauma and the other about long-term intimacy and sexuality, essentially live or die based on the complexity of the central performance.
Our conversation took a detour after that so she sent us this note.

Over the years, the warm, expressive face of Toni Collette has become a welcome fixture onscreen, particularly when it comes to portraying realistically multidimensional women. From “Little Miss Sunshine” to “United States of Tara” to “Hereditary,” Collette has become an expert at breaking gender molds and achieving complex, groundbreaking performances across a varied slate of stories and genres.
Collette’s newest accomplishment “Wanderlust” is no exception. Now streaming on Netflix, the show stars Collette as a British therapist named Joy who lives a perfectly comfortable life with her husband Alan (Steven Mackintosh) and three kids. When we meet Joy, she’s recovering from a recent bike accident that left her with a broken hip—but she’s too resilient and averse to inactivity to let that hold her back.

We discussed this once on the blog a year or two ago but let's update our list of favorite Collette performances on her birthday since she was absolutely slaying the multiplex this past summer in the demonic horror flick Hereditary. She's currently up for a Gotham award for Best Actress for that role.
She's also starring in the new Netflix series Wanderlust about a married couple trying an open marriage though I haven't yet watched it (it's on the queue). My list of Toni's best work goes like so. Yours?
12 Little Miss Sunshine
Warm, worried, winning.
11 In Her Shoes
Not everything about this works but she's wonderful in it...

Yesterday we got our first look at Henry Cavill in the role of Geralt in Netflix’s The Witcher series. It was met with some mixed reactions. Some fans liked it while others had a some fun joking around with it.
Today we’ve got some new casting news to share with you regarding one of the lead female characters in the franchise. According to TV Line, Harry Potter actress Anna Shaffer has been cast in the role of Triss Merigold. I imagine that they will give the actress the red hair that the character is known for.
Triss is an ally of Geralt as well as a love interest for him. What do you think about Shaffer, who also stars in the British series Hollyoaks, landing the role of Triss.
The series also cast Eamon Farren (Twin Peaks: The Return) as Cahir, Joey Batey (Knightfall) as Jaskler, Lars Mikkelsen (House of Cards) as Stregobor,...

Having already reached some of the heights of the superhero and action film worlds, Henry Cavill is setting his sights on fantasy-inspired TV.
Netflix unveiled the first look at their upcoming adaptation of “The Witcher,” based on author Andrzej Sapkowski’s legendary book series and eventual video game franchise. It’s Cavill’s hair and makeup test, but that flowing silver hair, leather chestplate armor, and full swig of whatever grog is in that medieval canteen, are some pretty decent previews for what the rest of the series has in store.

Toni Collette is having an extraordinary year. The “Sixth Sense” and “United States of Tara” star is garnering well-deserved awards buzz for her “Hereditary” performance, and just as Oscar season ramps up, here comes another powerful reminder of her acting prowess. “Wanderlust” is a Netflix and BBC co-production that has nothing to do with David Wain’s 2012 film of the same name that starred Jennifer Aniston, Paul Rudd, and Justin Theroux, though this six-part drama series also studies an onscreen couple who’s looking to keep their relationship afloat.
Equal parts empathetic and searing, creator Nick Payne treats his characters honestly and, in turn, crafts a first season both heartening and tragic. Collette is its center, guiding the ship through turbulent emotional seas with assurance. There’s plenty to admire about “Wanderlust,” but it easily could have drifted into the vast unknown of Netflix’s content ocean without her precise,...

Based on the fantasy novel series by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher tells an epic tale of fate and family. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.

1. “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” Season 1 (available October 26)
Why Should I Watch? After The CW found success turning a chaste ’40s comic book character into “hot Archie who fucks,” Netflix is taking your fond family memories of Tgif and twisting them into a horror show akin to “The Exorcist” and “Rosemary’s Baby.” That’s a direct quote from the “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” press notes, as Netflix states its “dark, coming-of-age” origin story as “tonally” in line with the scariest movie of all time and a very scary film made by an even more monstrous man (respectively). If this is where “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” came from, perhaps it’s best to remember where she ended up.
Best Reason: Kiernan Shipka is back in a serialized narrative! No, that’s not as catchy as shouting, “Little Sally Draper is back on TV!”, but a) Shipka deserves to be seen outside...

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future.
After nearly two decades in the entertainment industry, Kathryn Hahn is upending a host of beliefs about being an actress in Hollywood: She’s a mom in her 40s, and her career is better than ever.
“It is no small thing that the juiciest and most complicated roles of my life have come post- having two children,” she said. “And that is something to listen to, and something I hope younger actresses can hear and listen to. Your creative life can continue to just turn inside out and evolve in ways that you can’t possibly imagine, whether or not you decide to be a parent. It doesn’t matter. The further you walk on, the further you grow and age, it doesn’t matter. I was so surprised by that. Really, this is a huge surprise to me.

While the rulebook for when to launch a TV series has been thrown out the window in the era of Peak TV, the fall months remain some of the busiest with both returning favorites and new potentially binge-worthy series. October see’s a lot for both streaming and cable services with too many to even include on the list. Those left off but worth noting include the return of The CW superhero series “Black Lightning,” “The Flash” and “Arrow” along with another returning shows such as Showtime’s “Ray Donovan,” NBC’s brilliant “The Good Place,” AMC’s “The Walking Dead” and AMC’s “Fresh off the Boat.” New series include Netflix’s “Wanderlust” and Hulu’s “Into the Dark.”

Exclusive: Breakout new BBC One drama Bodyguard is headed to Netflix. The streaming network will carry the terror thriller starring Game of Thrones’ Richard Madden and Line of Duty’s Keeley Hawes outside of the UK and Ireland (and China where Netflix is not available). The series’ Netflix premiere is set for October 24.
The deal for Bodyguard, produced by World Productions, an ITV Studios company, was made through Netflix’s co-licensing team. The digital platform has been a partner since the show’s early production stages.
Under its co-licensing model, Netflix is collaborating with U.S. studios and international production companies on series that air on other linear or digital networks. Netflix takes first-run global distribution in as many territories as available, coming in as a partner on projects that are going to series at a finished script or pilot stage and as early as script development.

Everything we know about The Witcher Netflix series, including latest news, release date, cast, story, and much more!
Netflix has begun production of a series based on author Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher books. The upcoming Netflix series is not directly related to the CD Projekt Red video game franchise aside from the similarities that the two will naturally share.
That fact adds a slightly humorous twist to this announcement when you consider that Sapkowski recently spoke out against the artistic merit of the Witcher game saga by calling into question the medium's ability to properly tell such a grand story. Before that, Sapkowski also admitted that he chose not to take a percentage for the adaptation rights, which he later came to regret when the series went on to gross over a billion dollars.
