The protagonist's name Antonio Bonocore is the same as that of the protagonist of La banda degli onesti (1956)
Screenwriter and director Valerio Attanasio said in an interview that one of the sources of inspiration for his film was "The life of Lazarillo de Tormes": a 16th century Spanish picaresque novel written by an unknown author.
The scene where the young Antonio Bonocore runs away from the Mafia boss, while an airplane seems to follow him, is an homage to North by Northwest (1959) by Alfred Hitchcock.
The director Valerio Attanasio makes a cameo appearance as one of the students lined up waiting for the Bar exam.
