Emmy-winning breakout kids series Bluey will go free-to-air in Japan. Episodes of the Australian animated show from Joe Brumm will begin on TV Tokyo’s Eeny Meeny Many Moe’ slot on Saturday, October 26 at 7am local time, following the network’s deal with distributor BBC Studios. The show follows loveable and inexhaustible blue heeler dog Bluey, her younger sister Bingo and their mum and dad who have unpredictable tales in and around their neighborhood. Rei Marumo, General Manager of the Anime Division at TV Tokyo, said the series could become “an important conversation starter for both parents and children.” The Ludo Studios show, originally for the ABC, is the most-streamed series to-date this year in the U.S., with more than 35 billion minutes watched, according to Nielsen. Disney+ has international streaming rights, including in Japan. BBC Studios has also added Japan to its global master toy deal with Moose Toys.

The Perfect Couple shot to the top overall spot in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for its premiere week.
The murder mystery limited series, which stars Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber and Dakota Fanning, accumulated 1.91 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Sept. 2-8 (it premiered on Sept. 5). That’s the fifth highest total for any original series premiere week on the streaming charts this year, behind Fool Me Once (3.04 billion minutes), Fallout (2.9 billion), Bridgerton (2.76 billion) and Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender (2.56 billion).
The Perfect Couple was one of five titles to record more than a billion minutes of viewing for the week. The others are Netflix’s movie Rebel Ridge (1.11 billion), Family Guy (1.06 billion), Prison Break (1.05 billion) — which had been the overall No. 1 for the previous four weeks — and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (1.02 billion), which was even with its season two premiere a week earlier.

There’s a lot of promise in the idea of a musical starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga playing the Joker and Harley Quinn, especially in the latter being portrayed as the ultimate unstable fangirl, and giving Arthur Fleck something to hope for as he goes on trial for the murders committed in Joker. Imagine what John Waters or Paul Thomas Anderson would do with that premise. Hell, we don’t even have to imagine an animated take, as Joker: Folie à Deux’s one true masterstroke of sinister, madcap joy is starting with a short recap of Arthur Fleck’s story created by The Triplets of Belleville director Sylvain Chomet.
When that short is over, though, we get the Todd Phillips version, which is largely anchored to stone-faced reality for 130-plus excruciatingly withholding minutes. In grappling with the implications of its story, Folie à Deux’s every attempt at showcasing cleverness,...

Streams on Disney+ allow viewers to lean back and watch a preselected lineup of shows rather than be forced to pick a new episode for themselves.
When you log into a streaming service, do you suddenly become paralyzed by the overwhelming number of titles to choose from? Well, Disney+ is aiming to help with that. On Monday, the streamer continued rolling out around-the-clock streaming channels for subscribers who don’t want to have to deal with deciding what to watch. These channels offer continuous feeds of select titles found in the on-demand library of Disney+, streaming 24 hours a day so viewers never have to try to sort through the expansive catalog and pick what they’ll watch next. The channels first launched in early September, and this week Disney+ has announced that it is adding four new options to the lineup.

“Agatha All Along” has whipped up some impressive viewership in its first week on Disney+.
The Marvel TV series’ premiere episode has logged 9.3 million views globally on Disney+ within the first seven days of its release, according to internal Disney viewing data. Disney defines a view as total stream time divided by runtime.
While “Agatha All Along” kicked off to a relatively strong start, its viewership has already been exceeded by the “The Acolyte,” whose premiere episode reached 11.1 million views within its first five days of streaming on Disney+.
After the “Star Wars” spinoff series logged 4.8 million views on Disney+ within its first day of the streamer, its five-day viewership enabled “The Acolyte” to maintain its place as the streamer’s most-watched series premiere in 2024, though it was ultimately canceled.

The second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power opened to big viewing numbers in the United States — just not as big as its first season.
The Prime Video series amassed 1.02 billion minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Aug. 26-Sept. 1, good for first place among original series and second among all titles in Nielsen’s streaming rankings. Season two premiered on Aug. 29 with three episodes, and Nielsen says about 70 percent of the show’s weekly total was for those three, with the remainder devoted to season one. (Viewing totals on the ratings service’s charts cover all episodes of a series.)
The 1.02 billion minutes is down about 19 percent from season one’s opening week (1.25 billion) in August 2022. The Rings of Power ranks third among Prime Video series U.S. opening weeks this year behind Fallout (2.9 billion minutes) and The Boys (1.19 billion...

Exclusive: The BBC is re-shuffling its kids content teams as part of plans to boost brands and better serve young audiences.
Under changes announced internally on Wednesday, the BBC is moving children’s news show Newsround to its news division and beefing up pre-school brand Cbeebies, which is home to hits including Hey Duggee and Bluey.
Cbbc was conspicuously absent from the restructure. The BBC is slowly winding down the TV network and putting a greater emphasis on iPlayer content for children over the age of seven.
Newsround has long been housed under the BBC’s children’s content unit, but the production team and editor Lewis James will now sit under BBC News.
The Newsround switch is not expected to result in any significant editorial changes, but the plan is to amplify its output and better integrate the team into the wider BBC newsroom culture.

Even if you’re not a Halloween person, October means spooky season. It feels like every brand, store, — and yes, every streamer, finds ways to incorporate themes of haunting and horror. Disney+ started early, with the September premiere of “Agatha All Along,” which will air new episodes for the next several weeks. In October, the streamer will debut “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place,” an expansion of the popular Disney Channel series “Wizards of Waverly Place” which aired from 2007 to 2012.

Hey kids! Are you ready to learn about a terrifying, real-life monster called Churn? Math class just got real.
In the fast-paced, slim-margined streaming industry, lowering churn is the new growing-subscribers — and soon, bundling alone won’t be enough. Forward-looking streamers already need The Next Big Idea ™ to retain their user base. Their solution, according to the researchers at global-entertainment firm Ampere Analysis, are in the play room fighting over Barbie dolls as I type this.
Though these micro-est economics students may not use their own allowance money on the family’s suite of SVOD services, they have as much influence over the lineup — if not more — than others. AMC made a bet earlier this year that licensing a number of its shows to Netflix would help them find more viewers. That bet appears to have paid off.
Two AMC shows, Dark Winds and A Discovery of Witches, are among the top 10 streaming titles for the week of Aug. 19-25. They were added to Netflix at the beginning of that week as part of a deal struck in July to place about a dozen AMC shows on the service, complete with branding as the “AMC Collection.” (The shows will be available for 12 months.)
It’s not new territory for AMC, which partially credited Netflix for a huge spike in ratings for Breaking Bad’s final season and has also licensed The Walking Dead and Better Call Saul, among others, to the streamer in the past.
Dark Winds drew 929 million minutes of viewing for the week, good for fourth place overall.

The Paris 2024 Olympics took home the gold in Nielsen’s Gauge report for the month of August, which saw the Summer Games boost viewing in the broadcast category by 8% month-over-month and 11% year-over-year to a total share of 22%.

Netflix released the first half of Emily in Paris‘ fourth season Aug. 15, and as a result got just over half of the tune-in for the show’s last full-season premiere.

Prison Break held a steady audience for the second consecutive week, raking in another 1.6B minutes viewed from August 12 to 18. That put it in first place on Nielsen’s streaming charts, fueled by its return to Netflix in July.
According to Nielsen, Hispanic viewers accounted for nearly a third of Prison Break‘s audience during this interval, as the company says that demo is a “major driver” of the show’s viewership.
The overall list had a refreshing amount of streaming original content due in part to the fact that, as Nielsen points out, the end of the Olympics brought a lull in sports, which generally does coincide with a boost in streaming.

According to Nielsen, Hispanic viewers accounted for nearly a third of Prison Break‘s audience during this interval, as the company says that demo is a “major driver” of the show’s viewership.

It was another slow week for streaming originals from August 5 to August 11, with just one making it onto Nielsen’s overall streaming list. That was Netflix’s Umbrella Academy, which racked up nearly 1.5B viewing minutes in the week of the Season 4 premiere.
This isn’t exactly surprising, as the series was already seeing a boost in viewership in anticipation of the new season the week prior. It popped on the streaming originals list at No. 8 with 287M minutes viewed.
It’s a strong performance for the Netflix series, good enough for second place, just behind Prison Break, which is the latest licensed title to find a second life on the streamer. For Umbrella Academy, it’s still a bit of a deflation compared to Season 3, which secured more than 2B minutes viewed during its debut week in 2022 despite a more competitive streaming environment, premiering on the heels of the...

We're all familiar with the Netflix Bump. It's proven beneficial to a number of fan-favorite but ratings impaired series like Riverdale, Manifest, All American and more. The streaming service has even been able to boost up shows from beyond the grave, with long-canceled or recently ended series like Suits, New Amsterdam, and Young Sheldon. Well, another series has claimed the crown.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, for the week of Aug. 5-11, Prison Break ranks as the No. 1 show across all streaming services with a whopping 1.6 billion viewing minutes via Nielsen streaming content ratings. For comparison's sake, Max's House of the Dragon, which has fewer episodes but ended its second season on Aug. 4, came in fifth that week with 935 million minutes viewed.

In its second week on Netflix, Prison Break rocketed to the top of Nielsen’s streaming rankings.
The former Fox series, which also streams on Hulu, was added to Netflix on July 29 and made its streaming chart debut that week. For the week of Aug. 5-11, it more than doubled the previous frame’s viewing time, rising from 758 million to 1.6 billion minutes. (Hulu, incidentally, is developing a new version of Prison Break with Mayans Mc showrunner Elgin James.)
Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy — whose final season premiered Aug. 8 — was the top original series for the week, coming in at 1.46 billion minutes of viewing. That’s a strong showing, but also down a good amount from the 2.45 billion minutes the show recorded the week of its season three premiere in June 2022.

Nielsen’s Top 10 list featured no original titles for the first time ever as audiences set their sights on the athletes competing for the gold in the 2024 Paris Olympics in the last week of July.
“This is a notable interval in streaming not because of the heights it achieved nor records it set, but because streaming levels actually decreased significantly in the face of an onslaught of Olympic programming,” the firm wrote in its report covering July 29-Aug. 4. “By comparison, the first week of July had a full slate (ten out of ten) of billion-minute titles, whereas this week featured only two. Peacock bucked the trend with an extraordinarily strong week, driven by simultaneous coverage of the Paris Games.”

The Netflix original film “The Union” was the third-most-streamed title of the Aug. 12-18 viewing window, per Nielsen — a feat, as movies are disadvantaged on the Nielsen Streaming Top 10, having shorter running times than the TV series they’re up against.
With 1.3 billion minutes watched, the Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg-led film came only behind “Prison Break” (1.6 billion minutes watched) and “The Umbrella Academy” (1.4 billion), which were also the previous week’s top two titles. The former was recently added to Netflix after concluding its run on Fox in 2018, though it was already available on Hulu, and the latter having just dropped its fourth and final season on Netflix.
In fourth place, up from seventh place the week before, was “Fire Country.” The CBS drama was streamed for 1.2 billion minutes across Paramount+, where it has been available since its debut, and Netflix, where it was recently added.

The Olympics brought in very strong streaming numbers for Peacock during the first full week of the games. For other streamers? Not so much.
No original series or movie made the overall top 10 titles in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for the week of July 29-Aug. 4. That’s a first in the four-year history of the weekly rankings, according to the ratings service. Streaming levels outside of the Olympics “decreased significantly” during the week, Nielsen says.
House of the Dragon, however, continued its strong showing on Max (since the show also airs on HBO, Nielsen considers it an acquired series rather than an original). The Game of Thrones prequel topped the week leading up to its second season finale with 1.31 billion minutes of viewing, up from 1.04 billion a week earlier and its best mark of the season so far.

Nielsen is the most reliable name in the business when it comes to accurately reporting TV ratings. The trade-off is that it takes a while for Nielsen to sort through the data, hence why we're only now getting the streaming ratings for the week of Monday, July 22 through Sunday, July 28.

Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming list was a sea of acquired content the week of July 22, with House of the Dragon and Cobra Kai as the only two streaming originals to break through.
In first place was Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which landed on Netflix that week, marking its first appearance on streaming since its theatrical release in March. The film racked up 1.4B minutes viewed, and Nielsen says that the title over-indexed among Hispanic and Latin audiences, which accounted for 24% of all viewership.
There may come a time when an animated Blue Heeler isn’t dominating Disney+, but it hasn’t arrived yet. Bluey took second place on the list during this interval with 1.1B viewing minutes. The series has now made it on Nielsen’s overall chart 76 times, and this was its 17th consecutive week tracking above 1B minutes.

Most people who watched Peacock in the week of July 22-28 were watching the Olympics — but two other shows on the NBCUniversal streamer also had a pretty good week.
The swords-and-sandals drama Those About to Die moved into the top 10 original series for the week (it premiered on July 18), likely with an assist from heavy promotion during NBCUniversal’s Olympics telecasts. The series recorded 399 million minutes of viewing time for the week.
Love Island also stayed strong in the week after its July 21 season finale. Though it came down from two straight weeks above a billion minutes, the show’s 724 million minutes of viewing (including earlier seasons on Hulu and Netflix) is very strong for an unscripted series not showing any new episodes during the measured week.

Love Island USA and Team USA both helped boost Peacock usage in July, according to Nielsen’s latest monthly streaming report, The Gauge.
The streamer took home a 1.5% share of TV last month, marking its second best share ever recorded by Nielsen (it hit 1.6% in January) and a 33% increase month-over-month. This was due in part to the Paris Olympics, which kicked off at the end of July and, despite only three days of recorded viewing in this interval, had an apparent effect.
Total TV usage was up 2.3% in July compared to June, and it was also up 3.5% from July 2023. Nielsen reports that the final week of July, which marked the start of Olympic coverage, pushed the broadcast average up to over 22% of total TV. On average across the month, broadcast accounted for just 20.3% of TV usage — a slight uptick versus the month prior.

Peacock attracted 33% more viewership in July than in June, per Nielsen, thanks largely to the beginning of the 2024 Paris Olympics as well as Season 6 of “Love Island USA.”
According to The Gauge, a monthly Nielsen report, Peacock accounted for 1.5% of all TV viewership in July. That’s a solid increase from the month before, when the NBCUniversal-owned streamer came in with a 1.2% share, and marks its second-best share ever after the 1.6% it achieved in January of this year. And on broadcast, NBC’s airing of the Olympics accounted for all of the top five and seven of the top 10 telecasts of the month, led by an average 19 million viewers on July 28.
These bumps coincides with overall increases in streaming viewership, with July setting records for the four biggest streaming weeks ever measured by Nielsen. Streaming made up 41.4% of all TV viewing compared to 40.3% the month before, and in TV usage,...

The Olympics didn’t begin until near the end of July, but even in just a few days, their effect on TV viewing in the United States was noticeable.
Overall TV use increased by about 2.3 percent in July compared to June, according to Nielsen. That’s a rarity for the month, when usage levels typically drop as broadcast and cable TV slows down.
This year, however, the Olympics reversed that trend — even with only three days of coverage from Paris included in Nielsen’s monthly Gauge snapshot (the measurement covers July 1-28). Broadcast networks had 20.3 percent of TV use for the month, up from their all-time low of 20 percent in July 2023 — and for the week that the Olympics began, that number rose to 22 percent.
Peacock usage spiked by 33 percent month-to-month, as the streaming hub for the Olympics recorded 4.5 billion minutes of viewing just over the Games’ opening weekend. The NBCUniversal...

The Boys ascended to its highest mark ever in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for the week of its fourth season finale, and Netflix’s movie Hillbilly Elegy had a resurgence after Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance — whose memoir is the source material for the film — became the Republican nominee for vice president.
The Boys recorded 1.33 billion minutes of viewing time on Prime Video for the week of July 15-21, finishing first among all titles in Nielsen’s rankings for the first time (the season four finale debuted July 18). That’s the biggest viewing total for the series that Nielsen has ever recorded — slightly ahead of the 1.29 billion minutes it had the week of June 17-23.
Two other original series crossed the billion-minute mark for the week: Cobra Kai hit 1.09 billion minutes for the week of its final season premiere (the first of three parts) on Netflix, and Love Island had 1.05 billion across Hulu,...

“The Boys” achieved its best one-week viewership ever with the release of its Season 4 finale. Amazon Prime Video’s superhero satire reached 1.3 billion minutes watched during the July 15-21 viewing window, during which the finale was available for four days.
Along with beating its own personal best — and claiming the No. 1 spot on the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 for the first time — “The Boys” also enjoyed its eighth week at more than 1 billion minutes watched and its 20th week on the Top 10, which are both records for Amazon titles.
In the No. 2 position was “House of the Dragon,” which had its fifth consecutive week past the 1 billion mark, this time notching 1.1 billion minutes streamed. This is especially impressive given that the series airs on HBO’s linear channel, meaning that a chunk of its viewership isn’t accounted for on the chart. The second season of House of the Dragon is over, and we know the divisive season finale pulled in season-high ratings. But the show was doing pretty well even before that. Nielsen, the most reliable ratings outfit out there, is just not releasing streaming numbers for the week of July 8-14, the period starting the day after House of the Dragon what is easily the best episode of its second season, "The Red Dragon and the Gold." And for the first time this season, House of the Dragon claimed the number one spot with well over a billion minutes watched. And keep in mind this doesn't include viewers who were tuning into to watch the show linearly on HBO.
Viewership for House of the Dragon stayed steady during this period even as viewership for many other shows dropped. Here's the top 10 most streamed shows for the week of July 8-...
