The location for the scenes in 1850, were all shot inside and around actual 1850s cabins.
All of the characters are named after ancestral family members of the writer/director. In addition, Lucy, was also derived from St. Lucia, the patron saint of the blind.
The plate, fork, knife and glass that were placed upside down in the opening scene was inspired from the writer/director's great aunt. After her husband of 68 years passed away, she placed a table setting for him where he used to sit, in the manner shown in the film.
