MGM Holdings has reported a strong 42% third-quarter revenue hike to $380.2 million, thanks to higher television revenues.
In a filling Thursday on its investor relations website, privately held MGM also disclosed that its earnings slid to $25.3 million from $114.2 million in the year-ago quarter and adjusted Ebitda declined to $34.5 million from $90.8 million, which the company said was due to higher expenses-related investment spending on growth initiatives, including increased programming costs for its Epix channel, higher marketing expenses for Epix, expanded theatrical distribution, and higher overhead due to the acquisitions of Epix, Evolution, and Big Fish.
The third quarter included “unanticipated film impairment charges” totaling $19.7 million. MGM did not identify which title was the source of the charges. It also said this was partially offset by $32 million of higher adjusted Ebitda from “robust” licensing activity for “Vikings,” as well as deliveries of new episodes of “Vikings” (Season 6) and “The Handmaid’s Tale” (Season...

Some of the most eye-popping paydays in broadcast TV these days are being generated by unscripted TV show hosts.
Kevin Hart, Ellen DeGeneres and Dwayne Johnson are pulling in some $500,000 per episode for hosting competition series on CBS and NBC: CBS’ “Tko: Total Knock Out” for Hart, NBC’s “Ellen’s Game of Games” for DeGeneres and NBC’s upcoming “Titan Games” for Johnson. Jamie Foxx is understood to pocket some $350,000 an episode for Fox’s musical quiz show “Beat Shazam.”
Unscripted TV series have long been seen as the low-cost alternative that help networks balance their budgets as the price of scripted series climbs ever higher. That’s still true, but the crowded TV landscape means that networks have to spend more to make unscripted series stand out.
“Once you’ve invested $25 million to launch a show, if another $3 million to $5 million [in host fees] makes the difference between success or failure,...

Summer may not exactly be the Mecca of TV seasons, but people need to beat the heat somehow. Sometimes, that involves vegging out on the couch in front of the air-conditioner — might as well flip on the boob tube.

It was a night of close races in the preliminary tallies of the Friday ratings wars, as real-life ruled.
As of Saturday morning, the overall network rating/share race for the night is a three-way tie between NBC, ABC, and CBS, all with matching scores of 0.6/3 on the judging card. NBC currently has the total viewership win with 3.25 million.
However, pre-season NFL games took over some key slots in big cities, so check back on Monday afternoon for the final ratings tallies, which likely will adjust.
In the 8 Pm hour, CBS’s Tko: Total Knock Out and NBC’s two-hour American Ninja Warrior went head-to-head. The scorecard: they tied in the 18-49 rating/share with 0.7/3 for 8 Pm, but Tko gets a slight nod in total audience with 3.40 million viewers to 3.25 for the NBC hour.
At 9 Pm, ABC’s What Would You Do? scored a 0.6/3 rating/share, the same as Whistleblower on CBS.

Everyone had something to brag about among the big three networks in Friday’s ratings war.
CBS' TKO: Total Knock Out and NBC’s Dateline tied for the top ratings/share on Friday night, both garnering a 0.6/3. But it was a re-run of CBS’s popular Blue Bloods that took home the total audience honors, drawing 4.06 million viewers.
A re-run heavy schedule in the dog days of August saw CBS once again take the top slot among network performers in total viewers, but NBC won in ratings/share with a 0.6/3 overall.
At 8 PM, the start of a two-hour American Ninja Warriors on NBC had an 0.5/2 and 2.63 million viewers, putting it in second place behind TKO. A Quantico finale re-run was in third with 0.4/2 and 2.66 million viewers.

Big Brother remained atop Wednesday's ratings, while World of Dance fell off some — though not disastrously so — in its debut on the night.
CBS' Big Brother scored a 1.5 rating among adults 18-49, up a tick week to week. The improvement didn't carry over to Tko: Total Knock Out, which fell two tenths to 0.6.

The 2018 Espy Awards broadcast on ABC suffered noticeable declines in in the Wednesday overnight ratings compared to last year’s ceremony.
Airing from 8-11 p.m., the ESPYs drew a 0.9 rating in adults 18-49 and 3.9 million viewers. Compared to the 1.4 and 5.3 million viewers the 2017 awards show pulled in, this year’s show was down approximately 36% in the key demo and 26% in total viewers. This also marks the heaviest drop off year-to-year going back two years.
On CBS, “Big Brother” held mostly steady, while the second episode of “Tko: Total Knock Out” ticked down from its premiere last week. The series finale of “Code Black” also ticked down.
NBC aired mostly repeats except for “Reverie”, which was down in total viewers.
On Fox, “MasterChef” and “Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back” were both up in the demo.
On The CW, the special “Girl Got Game” drew a 0.1 and 470,000 viewers.

Following its lackluster July 4 week showing, CBS’s 8 Pm Big Brother bounced back and topped Wednesday night’s demo heap, while NBC’s 8-10 Pm America’s Got Talent clip job took the night in total viewers.
CBS’s 9 Pm premiere of Kevin Hart hosted Tko: Total Knock Out retaining a respectable 60% of its Big Brother demo lead-in to tie for No. 1 in its slot, while hanging on to enough of Bb’s overall crowd to become the most watched new alternative program of this summer.
Fox’s MasterChef and Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back fumbled 2/10ths of a rating point in the demo, MasterChef matching it series low while 24 Hours to Hell set a new low for the first-year series.
Following Talent at 10 Pm, NBC’s Reverie scored its most watched episode since its May 30 launch.
Meanwhile, The Originals returned to CW at 9 Pm after a two-week breaking with a demo rating down 1/10th from its most recent original.
CBS took the night in both metrics, followed by Fox in the demo and NBC in total viewers. ABC finished fourth in both metrics, ahead of CW.

CBS brass have re-thought the time slot for the premiere of the Kevin Hart-hosted Tko: Total Knock Out. The new obstacle-course series had been set to bow at 8 Pm July 11 as a lead-in to Big Brother but instead will follow the reality stalwart at 9 Pm that night. Total Knock Out then will settle into its regular post-bb slot at 8 Pm the following week.
Hailing from producer Mark Burnett, the 10-episode hourlong series formerly known as Tko features one player racing through daunting obstacles while four other contestants are manning battle stations along the course, firing over-the-top projectiles in an attempt to knock them off and slow them down. It’s an “us versus them” scenario, with the top two players advancing to the final showdown to face off for a cash prize.
Tko: Total Knock Out will be produced by MGM Television and HartBeat Productions and distributed internationally by MGM.

Somehow, we made it to the halfway point of 2018.
As summer begins to really take hold, July might not be as packed with headline new shows as previous months were. But for anyone who thought that the allure of the sunny outdoors would curb the insatiable appetite for new TV shows: think again.
(We do this every month — if you missed any of those previous picks, here are some notable TV premieres from February, March, April, May, and June.)
“Mostly 4 Millennials”
It’s been a big week for Adult Swim, with the mesmerizing “Mr. Neighbor’s House 2” premiering this past Sunday night and a new Casper Kelly short in the Infomercial slot. Now, to keep that momentum going comes this unclassifiable piece of satire (?) about a hyperconnected generation with a criminally short attention span.
“Sharp Objects”
One of the summer’s most anticipated series feels like one of the seasons surest bets.

Kevin Hart might feel good about “Tko: Total Knock Out,” but the contestants on the show sure don’t as they’re clobbered by discs and mallets while they try to cross an obstacle course in the show’s cold open, which was revealed exclusively by MGM Television president Mark Burnett at Variety’s Tune In! TV Summit on Wednesday.
The hilarious clip features over a minute of teaser highlights from the reality show’s first season, showcasing Hart laughing it up with contestants onstage, allowing them to showcase their individual talents and styles, before sending them off on an obstacle course that combines “Wipeout,” “American Ninja Warrior,” and dodgeball all into a single game. In front of a live audience, Hart sets the contestants across a course designed to send them tumbling into pits filled with foam cubes, water, or bubbles.

Mark Burnett took the reins of MGM Television and Digital just in time to steer the independent television studio through the choppy waters of digital disruption. Good thing he’s not a traditional studio executive.
“We’re in an interesting equilateral triangle right now,” Burnett says of the changing business landscape for content producers. “We’re going down a road where all the studios will soon be dealing directly with consumers.”
The silo effect of such global platforms as Netflix and Amazon buying up worldwide rights and increasingly producing shows in-house will make it harder for studios the size of MGM TV to prosper with high-end content. The upside is limited when a studio doesn’t have the ability to sell a show in markets around the world.
This is a big part of the reason MGM shelled out $1 billion last year to buy out its partners, Viacom and Lionsgate,...
