Netflix has paused all productions and acquisitions out of Russia in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine, according to a just-published report in Variety. Representatives at Netflix could not immediately be reached for comment from IndieWire.
Netflix reportedly had four Russian original projects in the works. One project affected is a crime thriller series currently in production that has now been put on hold. The neo-noir mystery series “Zato” was set to be the streamer’s first original series filmed in Russia. The series is set around uncertainties in the aftermath of the fall of the Soviet Union. From directors Darya Zhuk and Stanislav Libin, “Zato” was first announced in early February 2022.
The streamer currently offers a robust slate of Russian film and TV series on its platforms globally and in the United States, including the popular animated kids’ program “Masha the Bear,” the drama thriller series “To the Lake,...

If the world of film and TV has grown more global in recent years, driven in large part by the rise of streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, the past year has only sped that process up. That’s opening more doors than ever for foreign talent.
“There’s a huge world out there. And there’s talent in every market,” said CAA agent Rob Kenneally. “The idea that it all starts and ends in Hollywood is such a forgotten memory.”
Kenneally appeared in conversation this week with Roskino head Evgenia Markova during the Key Buyers Event, which is taking place online June 8-10. The veteran agent spoke about how changes in the global film and TV biz have rewritten the playbook for discovering and developing foreign talent.
In years past, Kenneally explained, an agent might have bought the format rights of a successful foreign show in order to adapt it for U.

The past few years have seen a host of Russian streaming services enter the market, and as in other countries around the globe, the pandemic was a boon to the industry, which grew by 66% in 2020 to reach a value of 27.8 billion rubles ($384 million), according to Tmt Consulting.
No company has benefited as much as fast-growing VOD platform Start, which experienced the highest growth in the industry, with a 172% increase in streaming revenue last year.
Founded in 2017 by the producers and owners of Yellow Black and White, the indie studio behind such hits as the Netflix sci-fi series “Better Than Us” and the comedy box office sensation “Son of a Rich,” Start was among the first streaming players to produce original content in Russia.
Over the past three years, the company has produced more than 30 original projects, including the dramedy series “257 Reasons to Live,” which played in competition at Canneseries, and...

Seventeen Russian projects and nine international projects from eight countries have been selected to take part in Wemw Goes to Russia, a new international co-production forum organized by Russian state film promotion body Roskino and When East Meets West, the Trieste Film Festival’s co-production platform.
The projects will be presented to potential co-production partners during the Key Buyers Event, which will take place online from June 8-10, with three additional days of screenings and matchmaking.
The Key Buyers Event was conceived in 2019 as a showcase for new Russian content, primarily geared toward foreign buyers. But the addition of a co-production market—expanded this year through the collaboration with When East Meets West—highlights what Roskino topper Evgenia Markova saw as growing demand to create a platform for Russian producers and their foreign counterparts to come together.
“It was the right choice,” Markova told Variety last month. “We saw it from the [Russian] market.

A team of Russian, U.S and Greater China producers is to give a second season to “Better Than Us,” a sci-fi series that was launched as a Netflix Original.
The first season tells the tale of a unique, AI-powered, family robot, with the ability to defend itself. When it goes missing, it is sought by Moscow homicide detectives and the ruthless corporation which tried to acquire it.
“We didn’t plan to go to China in season two, but the show lends itself perfectly to be told in Mandarin and be based in China, because in season one we reveal it’s the Chinese who designed Arisa, the AI robot with ‘free will’ against three Azimov’s rules. And now that Cronos Corp has messed things up, Chinese creators want what’s left of their incredible creation, not without purpose,” says the series’ Russia-based showrunner Alex Kessel (Amazon’s...

Though international film and TV production is currently halted due the pandemic, Russia is becoming more attractive for prospective partnerships once lockdown restrictions lift.
That was the takeaway of a panel held during the Key Buyers Event: Digital Edition organized by Russian promotional entity Roskino moderated by Variety’s Leo Barraclough who chatted with Marc Lorber, senior VP international co-productions and acquisitions at Lionsgate, and David Ellender, CEO of Los Angeles-based Sonar Entertainment.
Lorber said Lionsgate has a BBC drama series on hiatus in the U.K., which he hopes will go back into production in September, and “about 20 series in the U.S. that all stopped in various forms of prep, pre-production or post production” due to the coronavirus outbreak. Luckily the company managed to finish post in the nick of time on “Love Life,” which dropped May 27 on HBO Max in the U.S.

Walter Presents, the expanding streaming service for non-English-language drama, has acquired U.K. rights to “Russian Affairs,” a glossy drama about power, money, and sex in present-day Russia that is currently the number one TV show in its home country where the local title translates as “Gold Diggers.”
The ensemble series, which is sold by Russia’s Yellow, Black & White Studios, was picked up earlier this year under the title “Russian Affairs” by Amazon Prime Video as an exclusive for Germany, France and the Netherlands.
The deal with Walter Presents, which is a unit of the U.K.’s Channel 4, was announced during the Roskino Key Buyers Event: Digital Edition market. It will mark the show’s debut on the Anglo-Saxon market. Walter Presents will rebrand it as “Gold Diggers.”

Amazon Prime Video has acquired the first season of series “Russian Affairs” for distribution in Germany, France and the Netherlands, from Russia’s Start Studios.
The eight-part drama that follows the lives of Russia’s elite and those who aspire to that position is set in contemporary Moscow. Under the title “Gold Diggers,” the series was broadcast on Russia’s Start Ott platform in 2019 and generated more than 10 million viewers.
Daria Bondarenko, exec VP, international sales and co-oroductions, said: “The series lifts the lid on the bright lights of current Moscow, and the glamorous world of Russia’s wealthy society, where money, information, power, or beauty are the qualifications needed for entry, and illicit affairs are the norm.”
Start Studios is the production division of Russian independent studio Yellow, Black and White. In 2019, the company sold sci-fi series “Better Than Us” to Netflix. Other recent series from Yellow, Black and White include “Storm,...
